She'll be in the upper left corner of my vision, then she'll tell me she's my mom, and as soon as I think 'Ummm no?' she screams in something that sounds like a language I've never heard and rushes into my body, at which point I tend to have a panic attack and pass out. I only get panic attacks when this happens, too -- it's the scariest thing I've experienced. If I'm lucky I come to normally, if not I'll still be paralyzed. I've noticed a correlation between the paralysis and lucid dreaming, FWIW.

As far as it being supernatural, I'd never thought of it that way before. I think the reason why so many people see the same thing both on these drugs and in sleep paralysis is due to shared archetypes in our subconscious. After all, probably human forms are the most salient thing to us -- if you're hallucinating, it's not surprising that your mind would go there. But I could be wrong, who knows.
Sleep paralysis is so scary! Luckily it doesn't really affect me *knocks on wood*, it's only happened to me a couple times and since I knew what it was and I'm somewhat a lucid dreamer I was able to pull myself out of it. But it wasn't accompanied by scary hallucinations, it just sounded like I was underwater.

The first I ever heard of sleep paralysis was when I was a teenager and it happened to my best friend. I woke up with a text she had sent at like 3am saying "something really scary just happened to me " She went on to tell me she woke up unable to move and saw a dark presence at her feet that started moving upward towards her and since she was paralyzed she couldn't close her eyes. It started happening to her more frequently and she'd hear voices screaming or repeating weird things over and over. It happened to her so much I went to a store that sells things that have to do with the psyche and the supernatural and I bought her some herbs/leaves that are supposed to help you sleep if you put them under your pillow. I think they were lotus leaves or something. She used them and the sleep paralysis stopped.

My sister used to get it a lot too. She would wake up and feel an "evil presence" pressing on her chest. Sometimes she would wake up and see a boy's face staring at hers from like an inch away from her face, while paralyzed, so she couldn't just close her eyes.

There's an oil painting by Henry Fuseli that depicts elements of sleep paralysis (except that the woman in the painting is sleeping). The piece is actually here at the Detroit Institute of Art. It's one of my favorite pieces there. Whenever I go to the DIA I always visit that painting!

^^Every time it happens to me I'm so thankful I'd already read about sleep paralysis as a medical condition. I'd probably believe I was being possessed by a demon otherwise. Must have been absolutely terrifying for your friend.

Sleep paralysis is also responsible for most alien abductions too IME. I know it's a semi-rare occurrence, but if people were educated about it, they'd at least have the option of believing it's a form of hallucination. I can't even imagine the horror I would have gone through if I weren't somewhat of a psych-nerd.

Ohhhh I had totally forgotten I actually have seen a shadow person & I didn't had any of the "triggers" associated with the experience being a hallucination (like drug psychosis or an ongoing serious chemical imbalance in the brain...)

I won't bore you all with the telling of the tale but I did have a physical reaction to the experience (elevated heartbeat and sweating.) I actually though the shadow was a burglar!!! The dumbest thing of all is I was much better off with that being a "shadow person" versus the reality of a burglar (a LOT of people are seriously assaulted by burglars or home intruders if they happen to catch them in the act.)

The black eyed children give me the heebie jeebies. I read about them once and was terrified to look out the window at night for a couple days. *shudder*

^ OMG I know! I've heard about them also & am creeped the f$ck out. I believe in the paranormal. I have a lot of astral traveling dreams since i was a small kid as well as experiencing a lot of premonitions. I can't say that I've actually seen anything head on with the naked eye BUT I can sometimes feel energy in the room. I've seen stuff out of the corner of my eye & it's like "Oh well someone's here with me". Anytime lately that I've been overcome with my depression , I've felt "something" press on the bed lightly or touch my leg & although I feel it, it's not menacing or scary, more comforting. I chalk it up to it being someone that's passed on in my family & is just trying to comfort me. I've also had those dreams about passed family members that I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to when they died & have realistic dreams with them where we are going somewhere together & they tell me not to be sad etc. It's a comforting feeling when I wake up & remember it so vividly.

I really shouldn't post this///We humans are always fascinated and frightened by things that are not understood. My advise would be to leave it in it's own world, and stay put in yours-not all is meant to be known to us. Trust me, we don't all need a drug to see.. I know this all too well.
