Default C920 Causing Encoder Issues? Need Serious Techie Advice

For the past two and a half years, I've been using a first-gen i3 processor with a C310 webcam with absolutely zero encoder issues, doing pretty well for myself. Back in December, a custie bought me C920. My dinosaur laptop shuts off from overheating when using the C920, so I stole my husband's laptop that is running a... Intel Core i5 M460 @ 2.53 GHz. For the first few weeks, everything worked fine.

Now I'm having encoder issues from HELL. At first I thought it was the USB port not working, so I switched the port and it worked for a night. Then it wasn't working again. 3 USB ports later, a new ethernet cable, upgrading my encoder to 3.2 (SM has us downloading 3.1), trying 80 different settings on both the encoder and webcam, rebooting the laptop 2-3 times a night (sometimes it works?) and updating the drivers in the C920, tonight NOTHING is working to keep my video feed connected longer than a minute and a half.

Here is an example of my encoder log file:

Someone please help, I'm broke and need to pay the power bill. ;-; MissMyxx said she also had hella bad encoder issues with the C920 but she had encoder issues without it too. I've not heard of anyone else having C920 issues like this and I can't find anything on Adobe or Logitech that says they aren't compatible. I'm determined to make this work without needing to buy a C910.

You may have to replace the webcam like me. I plan to go shopping this upcoming weekend to buy my third logitech c920 hd webcam. I brought my first one on June 2013. The way the webcam is made, the cord is not the best. I have to move the cord a certain way to get a connection.

Are you sure it isn't your internet connection? When my connection is unstable that is what my encoder log looks like.

Also, be sure to use the 3.1 version instead of 3.2. Streamate recommends 3.1 because it works better with their site and 3.2 could be causing errors.

Other than that I don't know how else to help. I've never had an issue with my C920 and I've been using them for 2 years.

Also try manual focus instead of auto focus.

That's what it looks like for me and I also have an issue with the cord. The cam has to sit "just so" in order to be recognized by windows and if I move it disconnects me I'll be watching this thread for tips hope you get it sorted out hun.. I had to go back to my old C510

That's the way the new generation Logitechs are - it must be the lame software they aren't even trying to fix. I've been having issues with both a C920 and a BCC950, but when I asked for advice on their official support board they told the reason was me using the cams with third-party conference software instead of what they provide. From what I got they aren't even planning to work on improving compatibility. SMH.
So far, I've been dealing with the Logitechs as follows: 1) reinstall the system clean or roll back to the factory settings and install the essential drivers and utilities. Make sure the video processing drivers are up to date. 2) install the cam drivers and software to go with it (it doesn't give out 30 fps without it); 3) install the Encoder; 4) See if it works right. If it does: make a system backup archive and a recovery point. If it doesn't: rinse, repeat. I can't tell how many attempts it may take - from my experience, it depends on the device's personality and it's current mood, which is same as random. I had a new C920 start working with no issues on an old cluttered i3 laptop but then refuse to work with it after I had to reinstall the Windows. The system build and the software were the same, as well as the computer, so I guess the cam just didn't feel like working. It got fixed after I reinstalled the system for the second time, though - even though my actions were basically the same. Go figure.

If you can find a Logitech C910 it will probably fix all the issues. It is imho the best webcam because it has better drivers, and better build quality. The sound quality is also way better than the C920.

I think it has a lot to do with your computer specs. That being said... you are running a i5 w/ windows 8.1 & the 3.2 encoder correct? If so, make sure you are using the downloaded specs from the SM help pages. When you download and save them to your computer, make sure you use 'Open Profile' to load the settings into the encoder. If you need to adjust something, do it AFTER you have loaded the initial settings from SM. Try each of the 3 (low, med, high) settings and see which one works best for you.

I have two c920 webcams and one c930e. What I have learned is this:

My logitech cams last longer on tripods with the cord completely unraveled. (When I kept the cord tied up I had problems with the wire)

Download the camera controls (from logitech) for both cams and have them accessible whenever using the webcams.

**Do not use auto-focus ever on the c920 or c930e. The cam will blur and freeze when you start camming with the encoder. (You will need to uncheck it on the cam controls for each cam before you start streaming).

**Even if you save the camera control settings, when you turn the cam off/computer off they WILL reset 90% of the time. Always adjust/check camera controls every time you go online to cam.

**Delete any unused programs and end any tasks that aren't necessary, check speedtest.net right before you get setup to see if your speeds are ok. If they aren't, I have found that resetting your modem will clear the connection and return it to optimal speeds.

This is just what has worked for me. Everyone's computer, software, internet connection, etc... is different and it took me a few webcams and some research/experience to get and keep the 'excellent' cam settings. Trust me.. I almost threw that c930e out the window a few times...

    Thanks ladies.

    1. Internet is fine, I promise. It's a non-issue, I'm that confident.
    2. I will try the tripod when I get back from vacation, it'll help stabilize the cord.
    3. I always close all unnecessary programs and processes.
    4. I tried all 3 encoder settings.
    5. Auto-focus is turned off, because fuck that.
    6. I saw literally no improvement from switching to 3.2. It's really no different aside from a couple of video-recording bells and whistles.
    7. Always check my cam settings.
    8. Always used the logitech controls.
    9. I can't wipe the computer sadly, it belongs to husband.

One model made a point that both computers were purchased in 2010. Despite the i5 being better than the i3, it's still all old hardware. It could just be an entire computer that needs to be replaced. But the C920 is working perfectly fine with Skype as I type this right now.
