Default I hate my neighbors (sad pet story)

I live next door to a sweet older pit bull named Daisy. She's probably the calmest, friendliest dog I've ever met -- she rarely barks, she's never aggressive, she always greets me with her tail wagging, and she really just wants nothing more than to have her chin rubbed by a human. You know how dogs can smile? She always has a dog-smile.

That said, her owners treat her atrociously. They keep her chained up 24/7 on a 15 foot leash. She has access to a dog house, but it's made out of metal, so I don't think it's very effective at keeping out heat or cold. On hot days, I always see her trying to huddle in this tiny sliver of shade next to a fence. She lives on concrete and she has no access to grass or soft ground (do I need to explain how this is completely unsanitary and cruel to her?!). I have never seen them walk her. She doesn't have consistent access to food or water (although I give her water or dog-safe leftovers when I can, I have seen my other neighbors feeding her too). They never bathe her.

She's not spayed. Lately I've been seeing an un-neutered male pitbull keeping her company, and I thought he was just one of the many loose dogs in the neighborhood that harass her from time to time, which is sadly kind of a normal occurrence. But as it turns out, she's in heat, and it looks like my neighbors are breeding her. I think they only keep her around so they can make easy money by selling her puppies.

I've never seen them overtly mistreat her, like they never hurt her or starve her. But I'm totally at my wit's end for this poor dog, I just don't know how to help her! Technically my neighbors aren't in violation of any laws except for keeping her constantly on a leash, but the only punishment for that is a fine, and the ordinance doesn't make any provisions for removing mistreated animals. So basically, they'd have to shell out a few hundred dollars, and they'd still keep her. I'm worried that if I report them, they'll decide she's not profitable and something bad will happen to her.

I feel like if I try to talk to them about it, like, they're not going to be receptive to it. People don't treat animals that way out of ignorance of what it means to care for an animal, they do it because they really just don't give a single fuck about their pet's welfare.

I don't know what to do! Please help me figure out a way to help this poor sweet dog.

Wow, this makes me incredibly angry!! They *are* hurting her and she doesn't deserve that miserable of a life. Honestly, if I were you, I'd find someone that wants a dog and is a good human being that will give her a good life, and take the dog and give it to them. This person would obviously have to live away from your area. I'm serious. If the city won't do anything but give them a fine or whatever, f*ck the law. F the disgusting neighbors. They don't deserve to have her!

^ I do ask people if they want to stealth-adopt her! I actually have thought about this a lot -- part of me feels like the best way to handle the situation would be for her to vanish to a nice, clean, healthy environment while my neighbors are at work. I haven't found any takers yet, though.

If I was living alone & in a position to take her, I'd hop in my car tonite & come help you liberate her! I don't even know where you're located OP but I'd Google-map that shit & be there asap. What they are doing to that dog is disgusting.

I would go over the local ordnance w/ a microscope until you can find sm1 able to take her. There must be smtg in there that can be brought against those shitsack owners! Are there no spaying/neutering requirements in your area? Nothing to regulate backyard breeding? Sm way to bust them for the inconsistent feeding? Shit, rig up a hidden camera pointed at their yard & record how they treat her, then take the tape to the authorities. I get that this last bit may be crossing a bit into cuckoo-territory but I am so upset for you & for this dog.

My dad worked by a trashy family like that. One day when they were gone, he took off her chain and found another family for her. My parents hate animal abuse which has spread to me. Can you call an animal rights group like ASPCA? What they are doing is evil. Personally (I don't recommend this)what I'd love to do is shoot people like these pieces of shit because they are worthless losers anyway.

Please pm me. I know a couple of rescues and people on the west and east coast who can help with stealth adoption. My PitBull was in the exact same situation as daisy. My roommate at the time straight stole her. We lived in an apartment in west la at the time and she stole the dog from san Bernardino after a neighbor posted the story on instagram or Facebook. When I moved to new York, I gave her to my family to hold onto for a while. Never got in trouble and very happy, fat PitBull now living the good life.

reading your OP makes my stomach hurt

just co-signing on with everyone else here: fuck the law.

that dog needs a real home, props to you for being willing to step in. along with contacting Barbie maybe look into local rescue groups beyond just the humane society, back where I used to live (Toronto) there was a breed-specific rescue group for pretty much every type of dog under the sun

if you do a google search for 'pitbull rescue groups (your state)' some resources should pop up (I'd maybe not mention to whomever you contact that you plan to take the dog from it's current owners though)

good luck, and again props for not turning a blind eye to what's going on there

I love how the term for stealing a dog is stealth-adoption... hahahaha. I'm totally all for it though! So I second "accidentally" cutting her leash while they are gone. Just make sure you have someone who can take her first, pits are not in a good position if they land in a shelter.

Sure just about everyone knows this, especially OP, but make sure it's a rescue and not a shelter if you go that route. Like Selina said, shelters generally suck, even if they don't 'euthanize' aka murder animals outright when they don't get adopted quickly, and pits (pregnancy aside!) are so stigmatized..

OP, what state are you in?

Don't look at local laws, most states have a law that allows you to seize any animal that is in eminant danger.

We do it all the time with horses.
A friend works with the county animal rescue dept, and we just call, the sheriff sends a deputy to witness the seizure, and we load the horse up. The owner can contest it, but if they do, their treatment of the animal is examined. If it truly is a rescue they won't want to protest.

I bet those ppl will get another dog once that one isn't with them any more. They'll probably continue their trashy pattern.

Call ASPCA/cops. Take pictures and record some videos too.

Thank you everyone for all the good ideas! Also, I'm so relieved that other people can see that this is awful -- I was actually a little worried that I was overreacting like some crazy PETA weirdo.

I was stuck in class all day today so I'm going to figure this out tomorrow and over the weekend. Whether she gets stealth-adopted or if I can get her into the care of a local rescue, this dog is going to go to a new place where she'll be cared for.

Something like this happened to me. When I was a child I lived in a fairly decent neighborhood. We had neighbors across the street that had a cat and always left it out there...it just slept on the driveway all day and they never let it inside on cold nights, and you could hear it howling at their door to be let in from the cold.

Years later one summer they got another cat, a baby kitten and were doing the same thing and leaving it outside with no human interaction. I had a chat with them about this, but they seemed disinterested. I would play with it and it got accustomed to me, and one night it must have been cold and it came to our door. At that point I had enough of my neighbors' nonsense.

    So I stole it.

I couldn't even read thru the OP..sorry. I already have tears in my eyes. & I truly despise people who treat animals badly. Seriously, every night I pray for animals world wide that mistreated, I can't bear to think of it, though I know it's out there.
I hope you can get it resolved, & thank you for caring.

I have a friend that runs a small re-homing organization (non profit) for pits, she basically just takes pits the owner no longer wants and works to find them a home. I think there are a lot of organizations specifically for pits with all the negative stereotypes running rampant about them. I would look into something like that or a rescue if you are unable to find an owner for her. What they're doing to her is abuse or neglect at the least, she deserves to be with a caring owner.

Honestly if you threaten them with a fine they may decide it's not worth it to keep her, and you could avoid having to kidnap/rescue her. I was walking through a ghetto neighborhood about 8 years ago and came across this family who's cat had kittens. One of the kittens was lying dead on the driveway and the others were barely hanging on, the mother seemed uninterested in carrying for them and they were drinking milk that had been sitting out for days and gone bad. It was honestly one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen. I asked them if I could adopt the 3 kittens and they refused, I threatened to report them and they settle with giving me 2 of the 3 kittens. I took them to my dad who LOVES cats and we went to the vet and unfortunately it was too late for one of them, but the other one survived and was taken in by a great rescue organization (we wanted to keep him but his vet bills were totally $3,000 and the organization said they would cover him if we gave up ownership).

It seriously disgusts me how people treat their animals. I saw something posted on FB, it as a backlash to a posting on CL that said "I'm moving so either adopt my dog or I'll shoot her." There has to be something wrong with you to act that way. I'm broke and not working right now and spent all of yesterday making the 3 hour round trip to get my cat and bring him to the vet to get spayed. Did I want to spend $100 and my time doing that? Not really. Do I want to continue paying for the vet bills, food and litter for a cat that no longer lives with me? Not really. But I made a commitment to him when I adopted him and moving away doesn't release me from that. Granted if I wasn't going to get him back I would place him with owners who would take care of him completely, but throwing him into a SHELTER, let alone fucking killing him, was never an option.

I agree with everyone here, 'stealth adoption' sounds like a good idea- if you can safely pull it off.

Was nice to read this thread and knw I'm not the only one who feels this way. I hate to see animals suffer it makes me so sad.

Like Audrey_K did with kittens you could ask them if you can adopt her. If she is getting too old to be useful for them it would be win win.

This is Sissy, she has adopted my daughter as hers. When Dani is in town on weekends Sissy comes home with me and sleeps under the covers and my feet. She was a Craigslist adoption from exactly that sort of ad. The couple that had her were meth-heads with about a dozen teeth between the 2 of them.

There are many Pibble rescues out there and even more folks who love them. They are truly America's breed after all.IMG_20150127_142351.jpg

OMG I probably would have gone batshit fucking crazy if I had seen this. I'm way too much of a crazy cat lady to deal with that!

I contacted a local pit bull rescue and the local humane society and am waiting to hear back from both. My boyfriend was also telling one of his co-workers that I was thinking about stealth-adopting this dog and apparently this guy has connections with another local pit rescue! His co-worker is definitely the type to help with a stealth-adoption, too. I'm hoping she'll be able to be re-homed in the next two weeks or so.

It's weird though because my neighbors are really the nicest people. It's a husband and wife and this woman is so friendly to me -- if I met her in other circumstances I would never have guessed she mistreated animals the way she does. People are bizarre.

Some people are just that way, they want a dog, but don't want it in the house. My dogs are huge, but they live inside with us. The only dog I have ever chained out, was only out during the day while we were at work. Unfortunately somebody liked my purebred Blue-tick Coonhound enough to steal him out of my front yard.

In my city, it is illegal to chain a dog more than 12 hours in a 24 hour period.

^ My grandparents live in a rural community and their dogs have always been outside dogs. That said, they were never chained up (much less chained up in their own poop) were always given baths and monitored for ticks and stuff, kept very very well-fed, and they had cozy clean doghouses to take cover in during inclement weather. Outdoor dogs can still be loved!

    Sorry someone stole your dog.

Bunny, I'm thinking more of my giant breeds, that are meant to be house dogs. Many dogs can be kept outside, but chaining causes mental issues such as barrier aggression. A lot of Pit Bull attacks come about as a result of chained dogs protecting that tiny piece of the world they call their's.

Some people just don't extend their kindness to animals. I mean we're all good at rationalizing things... It's the only way I can understand how some animal lovers aren't vegetarians.

I think some people adopt animals and just don't think it through. They want a dog but they don't want their furniture destroyed. They want a cat but they don't want cat scratches from the kitten. Of course you can train animals not do those things but that takes time which they don't want to commit to. And then they forget that animals don't communicate like people and that they're doing these things on purpose.
