    Default Ankle pain from running

I've been running seriously for abt 6wks now, & hoping this is just 'adjustment pain'. My typical schedule was running 2-3 nites in a row, then take the nxt nite off, then run 2 nites & off the nxt, but this pain has been wretched enough that I scaled it back to every other nite.

I feel it on the outer sides of both ankles, below the joint -- almost back to the heel, then forward to the front of the joint, stopping at the beginning of the instep. No pain in other areas of either foot. It doesn't feel like tendinitis, I have that in several joints & know what that feels like. I used to get a lot of sprains & had one dislocation, but the dislocation was 15yrs ago & it's been almost 10yrs since the last sprain. I always stretch & warm up thoroughly first, & quit dancing last spring, but generally didn't have ankle problems, the problem joints were my knees + hip. It feels like there's nothing down there but bone -- feels like the bones hitting against each other. Got on the elliptical the other nite thinking the minimal-impact would help, but I don't feel much difference. I've tried to research it, bc I have nvr been a runner & always feel like anything beyond normal muscle soreness means I did smtg wrong. Like I said, I'm hoping it's just part of my body getting accustomed to running, but I'm getting a little concerned bc I ship in 10days & don't think going to a dr would be a good idea even if I could get an appt b4 then.

I can't help too much since you can't go to a doctor right now. But I was a runner for years, and I'd have weird pains some days, sometimes a knee, or ankle, and I'd take the day off from running and feel better after a day or two. It might be something similar to that, and getting used to it like you said.

Thnx ^^^^ Do you think taping would be a good short-term solution? I have always had mixed feelings abt doing that (even when I legitimately needed it) bc I know it can become a crutch.

Never tried it. I would usually wait until I felt it was okay to run again, or take it easy if I was really antsy and walk a lot that day instead.

You ship out in 10 days?!? OMG! I'm excited for you. Boot camp is such an experience!

I would actually recommend that you see a doctor, if possible. Your medical records are only a big deal prior to enlistment if you have an issue that can endanger other people's health (think epilepsy and firearms, not a good mix). They say they want to know everything, but they don't subpoena your medical records. A doctor will be able to diagnose the problem and guide you on how to deal with it during training, which is so important.

Also, a bit of unsolicited advice on this topic -- if anything starts mysteriously hurting while you're in boot camp, don't be afraid to seek care. They frown at sick call, but pain can be a sign of an injury that needs attention. When I was in basic, I developed a severe pain in my hip that I tried to ignore for 2 weeks. When I couldn't run without crying (embarrassing!) I finally got checked out. I had a stress fracture. I would've broken my own bone if I had continued to try to tough it out!

Anyway. I wonder if you have an issue with your form? Dancing may have trained your feet to stay rigid when you move. When you run, your foot needs to flex and bend. It's possible that your foot isn't hitting the ground as fluidly as it should and your ankle is absorbing undue stress. (Again, this is why you should see a medical professional!)

I'm a runner and I've been various stages of intense about training for many years. One thing that can happen a lot with running (especially if you just start training heavily, or you're starting up after never running) is tendonitis... I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it's more of a bone/sharp nerve pain and not anything muscular. Basically just make sure you ice your ankles and give yourself enough time to rest between runs. Definitely see a doctor though--you want to make sure you know what's causing the pain.

Tendonitis is also aggravated by wearing heels, so when I was training for a race and dancing more than a couple times a week my ankles would kill me. Good luck with everything. Hope you feel better!

Thnx kaninchen -- I have had so many joint injuries, & lied my ass off on the medical forms. I've been told repeatedly to do everything possible to avoid sick call bc it draws such negative attention -- I've been all but threatened w/ facing a medical discharge if they find smtg serious enough. Is my paranoia showing yet?

I thought part of it has just been that the streets are horrid in my neighbourhood right now -- there is a lot of digging-up going on & the construction ppl have been piss-poor in repaving the streets, leaving a lot of dips, rough patches, & even holes that can't be avoided, so maybe I am moving my feet funny/improperly to avoid turning an ankle. That's a good point you made abt dancing maybe affecting how I move w/o realising it! Going to pay more attention to that going forward.

Running shoes, not cross trainers or tennis shoes. If they don't say running shoes they are the wrong ones. Also if you do have the correct shoes, running shoes have a life span of about 3 months. If your shoes are older, they need replacing.

I've endured ridiculous pain, stress fractures etc. All due to worn shoes with collapsed support structure. With new shoes the pain went away within days.

Running can be tough on the body.

Like someone mentioned before your form and shoe fit make a difference. Also it's better to run on those cushy tracks vs hard pavement.

Hope your ankle pain eases up. Maybe a brace or some compression would help. Are you taking any ibuprofen or pain reliever? I used to get pain in my shins all the time so I feel ya.

Yeah, ibuprofen is my go-to. It's grating on me bc the pain was there today even just walking. But I am going to tape them both tonite & get on the elliptical & see what happens.

Are you wearing a different type of footwear than normal? Do you normally wear heels all of the time? I experienced some pretty significant pain when I went from exercising in normal tennis shoes to running in Vibrams - I (initially) ignored the need for a transition period.

Are you running on a hard surface? The type of surface you run on can make a big difference. Are there any grass fields or rubberized tracks you can run on? I used to run around the school baseball and football fields on the grass. Also, having good running shoes can make a big difference.

Yeah, proper sneakers are *so* important. My mom has ruined her knee pretty badly, she walked and built up to running over a little over a year, and she says it's because she's old but I'm sure her shitty crosstrainers didn't help. I keep mine for 300-400 miles ran/walked though, not by months. Make sure you do a quick google search before shopping - I've never found a store employee to be helpful w/ this.

I sometimes have to remind myself to keep my ankles straight, if that makes sense? I only think about it because I used to do marching band, lol. But it'll probably help.

There aren't any nearby surfaces that are more forgiving i.e. rubber or grass. I would do all of my running on the elliptical but I am trying to get my pfa time down & this machine console gives you every bit of info you could want except for actual mi/km distance. Distance is given in rpm & I keep forgetting to look for sm kind of rpm/mi/km conversion. But fk it, I am going to kick my own ass on the elliptical for awhile until I can get this pain sorted. Did it tonite w/ both ankles taped + steel-toe work boots & it took care of 90% of the pain.

I might also get a little time bought for me if my programme transfer is successful.

@ Charlie I only wear heels when I need to i.e. work or formal occasion. Normally I rock the shitkickers w/ their gel inserts Have nvr had problems transitioning between walking in my stripper heels & normal shoes.

There is also the possibility that the supports in my current trainers have simply collapsed. They were hand-me-downs & I have no idea how old they are or what was done to them; I just kinda took the 'They're intact & comfy, so I must be good to go' attitude. I am probably just going to continue w/ the boots + ankle braces since taping is such a pain in the ass.

Thnx vm every1 for all the advice. I was out to sea here & didn't even consider sm of the points you guys made.

I second this one - I was having ankle pain, bought different shoes, and the pain went away ::hurrah!::

Hi, I own a sneaker shop. I highly recommend brooks running shoes.
The problem is your pronation and ankle rolling. You are probably overpronating due to flat feet or a very low heel arch.
