Default has anyone had a guinea pig?

I was watching TV last night and saw the cutest guinea pig on TV. I really miss having a pet but we aren't allowed to have any pets in my flat, but I'm hoping they'll be OK if it's in a cage.

I have a guinea pig when I was younger and my mother hated it and made me get rid of it.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had one before? I have a cat (not with me right now, getting him back over the summer) but from what I've read a long as I buy a secure cage there shouldn't be any conflict between them? And that sometimes they actually get along....

(this looks so much like my cat it's actually freaking me out a bit)

I didn't have a guinea pig but my best friend did and I remember how cute it was and how we loved to pet it and feed it and snuggle with it. Now I want one....

This is what my boyfriend keeps saying, he's refusing to get one because he thinks the cat will eat it.

I think it depends on the cat... my cat is fat and mellow, so he'd probably just poke at it a bit and then leave it. A cat who is more outdoorsy or active/curious might want to play with it though... while they might accidentally hurt it, whether or not they go to the point of eating it I'm not sure, since guineas are a bit large to be prey items.

You would have to keep them separated..animals are funny about that stuff, territorial. When my ex & I had a rabbit, we got a 2nd one, & they nvr got along. The original guy was super jealous..the min. we bought the new baby in, he sat up & stared @ it in a way I'd nvr seen him look b/4.
Sometimes we keep them outside in an area together, but nvr unsupervised.
Also make sure the cat can't get near to it's cage, even if it can't get in, it might scare it.

I had a ton of guinea pigs growing up! We lived on a farm and had cats that were mousers who took no interest in my guinea pigs, so IDK... maybe our cats were just unusual?

My friend had a chinchila and 2 cats. One cat was sort of a maincun, big and evil but he never took any interest about chinchila but he likes to go out and bring some bats, squirrels and etc another cat is ugh a lap cat. I know a girl she had 2 guinea pigs they had some "fun" over the year she got 20 of them, she has 3 cats and 1 pitbull with toothless, but non of them were interested in guinea pigs

Guinea pigs are...okay. I grew up with them. They're friendly, in general. They can be quite loud, and their cages need frequent cleaning. Their hair is smooth, but generally sort of wiry (not soft and fluffy). I mean...they're rodents. I think they're one of those pets where they look cute, but then you get one, and you're like "........?" If you want a rodent for a pet, consider getting a rat instead. They're much more intelligent.

Why do you want a guinea pig?

I used to pet-sit a neighbor's guinea pig. IMO the long haired ones get smelly from dragging themselves through soiled bedding in the cages and their personalities are kind of dull.

You can have a better experience from owning a cat with the cat needing less attention. Just imo

Yeah, exactly. Guinea pigs all have the same flat personalities, for the most part, and they aren't very 'loving' creatures. They're more loving than reptiles, but certainly nowhere nearly as loving as cats or dogs.. I mean...they're rodents. You get what you'd expect to get when you're buying a rodent.

^ Hahaha that's hilarious you say that Charlie... my parents own a pet store and growing up I had EVERYTHING, except a guinea pig, for the same reason. It was just like "But what do they DO?" My mom had one that did have some personality but that was the only one in years.

However, I had rats, who were very intelligent and could be taught tricks and to come when called. So not all rodents are pointless

    We've had a few.

No interaction to speak of, they eat their own poop, wirey hair not fluffy and soft, and noise....they call them whistle pigs for a reason.

I had two guinea pigs growing up and I loved them to pieces. I guess as a kid I didn't notice the lack of personality everyone else is commenting on, but they were fluffy and I could hold them and pet them, so that was good enough for me.

I had one of them at the same time as a dog, and they were always fine too. The dog came after the guinea pig, so I think that helped -- it wasn't like the dog came first and then had a strange creature coming into her domain. The guinea pig's cage was up on a desk that the dog couldn't reach, and the cage took up the entire desk so the dog couldn't just hop up either, so that would probably be a wise set-up when you get your kitty back.

Since I was a kid, the task of cleaning the cage pretty well always fell on my mother, but I do think it had to be done fairly often. Maybe once a week? We just use softish hardwood shavings, so it was easy enough to take the guinea pig out, toss the shavings, put in new ones, and then put him back in.

They can be a bit noisy with their squeaks, but as long as you don't keep him in your bedroom and can shut a door between you when you're sleeping, I think you'd be fine.

Yes! I think they're good pets for children (though they sometimes nibble / bite). They stay still enough for children to pet and interact with the animal, they make noises, and they can run around the house without making too much of a mess.

I just can't imagine getting one as an adult!

I guess I'm a child then! Lol. I just think they're really cute and we're limited to what we can in the flat.

Anyway thanks for the responses but my bf is dead set against it. He says he thinks he will come home to the guinea pig dead, blood on my cat's face and me crying and it's another cat when we move or the guinea pig. Going to have to go with the other cat as my boy really needs someone to play with being an indoor cat.

If it was up to me we would basically be living in a farm. I've pushed for a turtle, another cat, a dog, a ferret, the guinea pig, and am dying for a miniature pig but obviously not in an apartment.

    Miniature pig, or a micro?

Potbellies are mini's, micros are about the size of a small dog.

I get the farm thing, it would not do for me to have a lot of land, too many free horses out there .....

I have a friend that can't turn down a rescue horse...he had 15 at last count.

If you're worried about the cat eating it, why not get a rabbit? Rabbits are from my experience much better at putting up fights if anything tried to attack it. They're smarter and have more of a personality too. You can get dwarf rabbits so they're aren't so huge as well. Indoor rabbits live longer than outdoor. They do however eat their own poo and their piss smells (but so does guinea pig piss).

Cute little story to convince you to get a rabbit:
When I was little my sister had a rabbit and one day the rabbit came up to our dog and took dog biscuits right out of his mouth! It was the funniest thing, if we filmed and uploaded it we would be rich hahah.
