Default What are good comedies, sci-fi/fantasy, or weird/avant garde movies you'd recommend?

I haven't seen a good movie in a while. The last good comedy I saw was "The Interview". But since then, I can't seem to find a good movie. Alot of movies are boring to me, or they drain me if they have too much CGI or action sequences in it. I also like really odd/weird/artsy movies with rich visuals.

The kind of movies I like are:

    *Big Fish
    *Bandits
    *Don Peyote
    *Altered States
    *Across the Universe
    *The Big Lebowski
    *The Cell
*Merlin (the 1998 mini-series, NOT the more recent TV show)
    *The Matrix

I can't think of anything else that comes to mind. I just want to find a movie that's either funny, intriguing, odd, or makes you feel like you're in another world. Any suggestions?

I think you would love Smoke Signals if you haven't seen it yet! It's a hilariously sad movie.

I watched The Madness of King George the other day. The first half was lol funny.

The Signal was also pretty awesome(imho)!

I'm a sci-fi/fantasy nut. My more recent sort of "big budget" favourites have been:

    *Cowboys and Aliens
    *John Carter
    *Sucker Punch

And if you're into "hilariously bad" older movies, give Plan 9 From Outer Space a shot. It's SO funny. It's not meant to be funny, but it's like ... Rocky Horror Picture Show levels of campy with just TERRIBLE effects that makes it hands down one of the most hilarious things I've ever sat and watched.

Oh and if you like weird were you have to interpet the end I watched waking the dead. I had to google it to interpret what other people thought was going on. A lot of people said this movie haunted them for a long time.

Do you like animated films? Fantastic Planet is THE weird/artsy/rich visuals film. Here's a few off the top of my head:

    Willow
    Young Frankenstein
Pineapple Express (if you liked The Big Lebowski...)
    The 'Burbs

Also, I loved that Merlin miniseries so effing much. I made my parents buy me the VHS set! I must've watched it a dozen times when I was 11.

For avant garde try "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover".
For fantasy try the 1977 animated version of "The Hobbit", it is 1000 times better than the modern trilogy.
If you haven't seen them yet, try "Time Bandits" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"

I don't think I can name all of the ones I really enjoy so a few to start, but I may come back and edit later if my mind works. These are ONLY the ones I would watch more than once.

    Dune. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_(film)
    Sleeper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0RMit1vbiU
    Alien
    Contact
    Stargate

The next one can NOT be seen by anyone as it may cause death by laughing.
Low-budget story of four astronauts in deep space, whose mission is to destroy unstable planets in star systems which are to be colonized. The late Commander Powell is stored in deep freeze, where he is still able to offer advice. As their mission nears completion, they must cope with a runaway alien which resembles a beach-ball, faulty computer systems, and a "smart bomb" who thinks it is God.

    Wargames

    Wings of Desire
An angel tires of overseeing human activity and wishes to become human when he falls in love with a mortal. Wings of Desire received "Two Thumbs Up" from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert on Siskel & Ebert & The Movies. Leslie James of 680 News Toronto claims it is one of the best movies of all time. It was ranked #64 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010.

    What nobody liked
    Labrynth

I've seen The 5th Element several times and catch some subtle something in the background, that you don't realize has importance until later in the movie.

The Long Kiss Goodnight is an action film, but Charlie Baltimore is such a tough bitch.

"Muriel's Wedding". Is somewhat of a rom-com, but is not they typical "girl meets boy and end up together", so don't be fooled by the title. Available on Netflix. Is an Australian film, btw.

A movie that combines comedy, fantasy, and sci-fi? "Galaxy Quest".

Another movie? "Melancholia". Is a Swedish film (in English, though), with Kristen Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and Alexander Skarsgard. Is about a planet that clashes with the Earth. It would also fall in the "Avant-Garde" category.

I tried to watch Smoke Signals a few years ago, because it is the first Native American directed and casted movie. But it disappointed me, it was a little depressing from what I remember, so I didn't watch the whole thing. Maybe I should give it another shot? There was another Native American film I watched a few years ago that was awesome, but I can't remember the name damnit. I'll have to find out and let you know later. There needs to be more Native American movies!!!

The Signal looks pretty good, I'm going to watch it later. Thanks!

Scarletkitten, have you seen the Twin Peaks series/film or any other David Lynch stuff? Would definitely come under weird/avant garde. Some of it can be seen as pretentious but probably mainly by people who need films to have a nice neat linear style with all the dots connected(nothing wrong with that, just can be more interesting to be left wondering sometimes).

I think Mulholland Drive is a beautiful film. I still haven't seen Inland Empire which is the follow-up.
Yes, I love David Lynch! Twin Peaks was amazing, I didn't watch the entire series, but I've seen most of it. Very strange, surreal, and intriguing! "Lost Highway" is also another one of my fave Lynch films! It has a dark, haunting sex appeal to it.
