Default BOFA vs Chase vs WF: Which One ?

Appreciate feedback from people with accounts, or experiences with these 3 "big" banks: Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo. Plus any other big banks with strong nationwide presence. Obviously, 1 factor I'm looking at is a vast network of ATM's I can tap into without incurring any fees. Also interested in feedback on customer service, plus any surprise "gotchas" in fees, etc. Thanks.

Wells Fargo doesn't discriminate against companies that are ADULT related employers. They are the best of the 3. Chase closed down SEVERAL accounts of adult stars, cam girls and web models when connecting the adult work with their deposits.

They are great about refunding fees and reversing error transactions. Their customer service is real friendly and I've enjoyed being a customer for years.

Chase: had awful experiences with transactions being rearranged (to incur the most overdraft fees, back when I was less responsible about balancing my account), and the customer service was generally very rude and uppity, talking to me like I was a child... had a credit card from them that was also BS, I had the damn thing for 4 years with perfect payments and they refused to increase the limit from $300 (wtf is a $300 limit good for?)

Wells: Eh. Don't like all the fees for having the accts, but they have been good about refunding fees. Buying anything online is a bitch though, if you type Ave. instead of Ave for your address it will not go through.

I LOATHE Wells Fargo. They have some bizarre rule about encouraging tellers to chit chat with customers- this annoyed me to no end b/c back in 2008 I got shorted a hundred dollar bill by a teller- they don't need to be encouraging tellers to NOT focus on what they pay them to do!

(BTW I counted my money before I stepped out of the bank so the teller realized her error and corrected it while the CCTV would still be able to prove I walked away from her with LESS than I was supposed to get. Not that I would trust them to be truthful about it all if I had come back after leaving the building.)

There are other problems I can complain about but the other MAIN thing that should concern you is they flag customers who deal in mostly cash as "suspicious." A friend of mine I will call "Bill" owns a small business that deals with scrap metal and transportation- he pulled all his money out of WF because they were giving him crap about the amount of cash he dealt with. (He also has a minor record from way back so the numb nuts at WF decided he must be up to no good....even though the record has to do with a wildlife/hunting related offense, NOT drugs or violent felonies.)

I still deal with WF to pay money I owe to people I know....I get surly when they start that whole "chitchat" shit, plus nosy questions.

^ I don't deposit my cash, except to pay bills via debit, but you're right that they do that. I had a student funds refund get direct deposited into my acct, and when I went in to get a new debit card the girl goes "Do you always carry this high a balance?" None-ya-business! Isn't that what banks are for, keeping larger amounts of money? Derp.

Wells Fargo: I had some problems with one of their banks not wanting to cash my Niteflirt checks. However, I believe it was just a regional thing. Other than that....I never had any problems with their other banks.

Chase: YUCK!! I always had a problem with them They tried to close my account as phone sex operator due to some uppity reason and kept trying to call Niteflirt's customer service about my checks.

Bank of America: I never a problem with them nor did they judge me. Bank of America usually do not care what you do unless you used their Bank of America cashpay card.

In the southeast, WF and BOA have large ATM networks. All three have horrible customer service and outrageous fees. As noted above, WF doesn't really look too closely at adult businesses. For international transactions, BOA has the lowest fees of the bunch and the best exchange rate.

BTW banks have access to your Permanent Record (aka the info that comes up when someone runs your SSI number.) & When you open an account most major national banks SAY in the paperwork you are given that they reserve the right to share your banking info with the IRS, with law enforcement and anyone they wish....

In other words, if you have something on your record that makes you nervous about depositing too much money in the bank....learn how to store your savings elsewhere. Liens happen, IRS seizures happen, & info-sharing definitely happens.

^ exactly. Mine is school money from a legit source but I still don't like it in a bank where my transactions are monitored. I considered withdrawing the entire $7k out but figured THAT would be suspicious somehow. So I'm just using it for bills and maybe withdrawing cash here and there.

I think sticking to a safe and/or hidden creatively is the best option with all the Big Brother concerns nowadays.

    Avoid big banks

Use a local bank where the tellers know who you are.

If you occasionally incur ATM fees, so be it, you will find it worth the extra

most banks have extensive networks where the atms are fee free[ IE NYCE]

I don't know if there is much of a difference between them. I have been told that BOA's personal account fees are a little lower than the other two, but I only have accounts at one bank so I really cannot say.

As a fellow national traveler, what I found important is to identify which bank has the most convenient branches in the cities that I travel to the most. For example, BOA has virtually saturated many of the east coast cities and has a strong presence in certain other major cities, like Dallas and LA. But when I traveled to places like Milwaukee or Mobile (AL), I was SOL.

If you travel predominantly to the west and midwest Wells Fargo is probably a good choice. Same with the southeast. However, WF has not really penetrated the northeast, so you'll be paying fees if you need to make withdrawals in places like NYC or Boston.

So, like I said, you may want to do a little research using the cities you will most likely be visiting in order to narrow down your choices.

Oldster, that sounds great in theory, but you really don't want to rely upon some local savings bank when you are half way across the country and run into an issue with your card at 10:00 pm on a Sunday night. I run a business that requires me to travel and I can tell you that having access to a national bank with local branches and 24 hour support has saved my bacon more than once.

By way of a few examples:

    1. On a few occasions (especially in the early days) I needed withdrawal limits raised and was able to do that on a 24 hour help line.
    2. Twice I needed to setup one-off wire transfers, which had to be done in a branch.
    3. On a couple of other occasions, my card was frozen due to supposed suspicious activity and I was able to call during off hours to have the restriction lifted.
    4. Once I lost my card while on the road and obtained a temporary replacement in a local branch.
    5. One time I needed a signature guarantee while on the road was able to obtain it from a local bank branch.
    6. Once I had to pay for a conference event and found that I left my checks back in the office, but I was able to obtain a cashier check at a local branch.

I'm sure that there are other examples, but those are the ones that I can come up with at the moment.

So with all of that said, IMHO a national bank is a necessary evil if one travels a great deal. In fact, I was once so fed up with my national bank that I tried to use a local savings bank instead, with friendly faces, personal service and no fees on just about anything, but I quickly switched back when I started running into problems on the road.

If your only concern is ATM fees, there are a number of banks that will reimburse you for them.

Yeah as much as I hate to play devil's advocate, it can be difficult. I mean obviously it depends on if you travel a lot; if you're like Rick you probably do need access to your bank frequently enough that it's a "thing".

I had an AZ credit union at one point, and was SOL when I went to Vegas one weekend. No ATMs, no branches, so when I needed to have money transferred from my savings to my checking acct and the phone line wasn't working... yeah, not so good. Check out their support systems (website, phone, what capabilities each has) before committing to an acct at a local credit union.

Haha. You had the fun experience with me at BOA of my card getting stuck in the machine,. My fault i bent it But I was out of state and they issued me a temporary card immediately. I have had accounts with all three mentioned. I closed my chase account when I was out of state i deposited a large amount and the machine took it and said out of order. it took me 20 phone calls and a week to get my money. That's happened with wells and boa and they credited me right away. i guess I'd say I use my Boa the most.

Thanks, eagle, but ATM fees aren't my only concern, just one factor among several. I'm considering other factors like the fee structure, availability of brokerage accounts, safe deposit boxes, etc. Plus, as rick aptly pointed out, coverage in the areas you're mostly likely to travel to. There is no slam dunk for me among the 3 choices mentioned.

Yes, oldster, I agree that a local bank, or credit union would be best deal. FYI, if your particular credit union is part of a network, you can withdraw funds virtually nationwide. At one seasonal place I stay at, there are 3 network credit union ATM's within 3 miles that I can withdraw from for no fees. Place isn't exactly a booming metropolis, either. I can use network ATM locator from credit union website. All well and good. However, networks can go down, or you could exceed your limit, and be in need for more fun money at a club. Hence, a good solid backup ATM card.

Thanks to all for your input.

All financial institutions must abide by the same laws and regulations, even credit unions.

None of those laws or regulations forces financial institutions to share 100% of your information to anyone or any government agency. The only way to get it is through a subpoena or court order involving a specific case.

The information reported to the IRS is yearly interest, suspicious activity, and cash transactions that are over threshold limits. They are usually looking for money launders. But it could flag an audit depending how much money is involved. If one isnt filing taxes then it becomes a concern.

Financial institutions do not have access to criminal records. They have access to credit reports, social security data, and chexsystems.

Is there any particular reason for US Bank? I only ask because we have one in the area, and my fear now is that since we're official and making payments, that the rug might be arbitrarily pulled out from under our business. I could care less about who they report to or my own reputation, so long as the money keeps flowing to the bb's. Unfortunately WF is not an option within about 12 hours of where we live.

If you NEED a national bank, compared to the rest for general accounts, USBank is better with fees, fair lending, access to alot of ATMs and branchs across the US.
