    Sad Knee Woes

I apologize if this has already been covered: I did a search but admittedly, my searching skills suck.

About a week ago, I noticed my right knee hurt a little bit. I tried toughing it out, which was the wrong idea: it's gotten steadily worse to the point where I can't sleep at night (I've been prescribed Vicodin, which helps but not as much as I think it should). I've stopped dancing for now and I have an MRI on Tuesday, but the doctor thinks it's probably a torn meniscus. Yikes.

My questions are: has anyone else gone through this? How long did it take you to heal? And were you able to dance while you recovered?

If not, what did you do for monies while you were gimped up?

And does anyone have tips on how to not mess up one's knees while dancing?

Yeah when I first started my knees quickly got into bad shape. Like they were all bruised up and sore and when I bent them like walking down steps I could hear them cracking yikes!

I cut back shifts from 4 days to 3 days
I iced my knees after shifts to reduce bruising and swelling
And most importantly i stayed off my knees as much as possible

I believe the worst position which I see a lot of girls do on stage is get onto all fours to twerk their ass. Being on your knees AND bouncing all your weight on your knees is the worst thing to do for someone with sensitive knees.

Massage your knees, take hot baths, take an asprin and I personally like turmeric capsules to reduce swelling. If it's bad, perhaps invest in a webcam and try camming while you're recovering. Way less stress on your body.

Make sure your shoes don't have a severe angle from heel to platform. And don't do floorwork using your knees as fulcrums.

I'm gonna bring up these stupid fucking shoes that I'm always ranting about like a crazy person...again. But seriously. They're good for newbies and girls with knee issues.http://m.snaz75.com/el-656-march.html

I used to do the stupidest shit to my knees when I first started. Jesus. I didn't care about my knees because I was having such a blast on stage. When you do stuff like that professionally, over time (as opposed to twice a year when you go out dancing with your friends), it takes a toll. Repetitive stress injuries are a thing.

    3 Things:

    1. Glucosamine Sulfate
    2. Arnica gel
    3. Leg warmers

Also, when doing floor work, try to avoid going on your knees too often. Don't put alot of pressure or weight on your knees.

Thank you everyone!! I took 4 days off completely and I am feeling SO much better. The doctor says there's no structural damage, and I've got a physical therapy appointment to make my knees suck less. I am guilty of every bad habit you guys named in this thread, so I'll be dialing back the knee-intensive floorwork, taking glucosamine, icing my knees after work and investing in some leg warmers. Also, Arnicare is amazing.

    You guys rock.

I've recently started doing hamstrings exercises to try to build up strength there. Lots of people have over-developed quads, which can throw the knee off balance. I have moments where it feels like my right knee could collapse backwards (eek). It doesn't hurt. But I think that's probably my issue...weak hamstrings.

When you go to PT, be up front with what you do, even demonstrate some moves that stress your knees. The PT can tayloy exercises specific to the weak areas to strengthen your knees.

My daughter has exercises specific to horseback riding that she must maintain, or risk needing a knee replacement in later years.

It's important that the PT fully understands the load your knees must deal with.

You can always say you are an interpretive dance artist, if you don't want to be outted.

This is true. My thighs and hips definitely are thicker lately & put more weight on my knees (I walk, kneel and turn all day at my day job. ) I am trying to slim down to reduce the overall weight on my knees but at the end of the day wear and tear is what it is......

I just wanted to thank OP for starting this thread! I've been having a LOT of knee problems and I am only 22! I now understand that it's because I've been putting a lot of weight on them. Thanks so much!

Argh, I had similar issues when I started stripping. Going down stairs felt awful :/ I had to take some time off work and bought different shoes. I also started doing yoga regularly and that seemed to make a big difference.

Most of the time, pain or misalighment in the body beacouse of feet. Very banal but still you may not notice, but you could have dislocated foot and this misalighment move a knee. I had such a problem. I also had a lower back pain, i went on massage, i tried epsom salt bath, i tryed kenasio tape, but after i found a book "PAIN FREE" i had a relive right the way. This book cost 6-10$ if you dont want to read,on page 64 exersises.

My knees are trashed and not really from dancing. I ysed to play hockey, was the starting catcher for my junior high school softball team, did equesteian three day eventing and currently shoot 3 position 50 meter rifle. All stuff that's brutal on my knees.

I've had better success with ice right after work and heat after that. Stretching is probably one of the most important things you can do. I'll stretch, apply heat and stretch again in 10 minutes. For floor work, Im reallt careful about what part of my knee I'm putting pressure on. Never, EVER twerk when you're resting on your kneecap. Like EVER!
