    Default Getting a Hysterectomy

After having over a year of period Hell, I've decided to take a giant leap and get a Hysterectomy.

After my last child my menstrual cycle went nuts. I expected it to change, as it had after my 2 previous children. But then it just got unbearable. My period would last for months at a time. It would finally end, so I would have sex (or cam), and back comes the never-ending period. I would use up to 12 Super Plus tampons in a day sometimes. Other times I might need only 1 Lite. I would be in so much pain ALL the time. The pain was worse while bleeding, but since I was always bleeding I was always in pain. I had some Vicodin leftover from my gall bladder removal and my husband's vasectomy the year before. I took them only if I need them to function and at a minimal dose, so usually to be able to work.

My Dr flat out refused to prescribe pain meds. She is fine with me taking OTC meds, but looks at RX meds as a band aid. Her thought is that the problem doesn't need a band aid, it needs to be fixed. She doesn't prescribe pain meds unless she is sure of where the pain is coming from. If I'm on pain meds I'm not going to notice slight changes in where/what pain I'm having. The location of the pain just makes so many possible issues and that is why she wouldn't prescribe to me. So my Dr started by doing bloodwork. She wanted to make sure the excessive bleeding wasn't causing Anemia (common in my family without any issues), check hormone levels, and look for other possible causes. Everything came back clear so she schedules an ultrasound and biopsy.

Between the bloodwork and the next appointment I lost my insurance. So I looked into my options and it was just cheaper to get married. My husband and I were together for 6 years already. We never really felt it was important to get a piece of paper. But with me being a stay at home mom, I NEED to be healthy. After a few months we are finally able to get married and I get my insurance card. On to rescheduling my appointment!

The ultrasound was of my Ovaries, Uterus, and Cervix. There are some blind spots when this is done, so it's not 100% accurate, but from what she saw everything looked good. She was even able to tell me which ovary was going to send out the next egg. She the biopsy of my cervix to send out. And to end the appointment we discussed birth control options to try and regulate my periods. I decided to try the pill. I'm glad I did since there is a 'calender schedule' I had to stick to, it helped me remember important issues with my period. I was going to come back in 3 months for a progress check.

My appointment came. My period was still painful, it seemed even more than before. But I was at 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. There was still spotting in between. But I was glad there was even any progress. So my Dr gave me my options. I could continue with just the pills. They seemed to be getting my period normal-ish, but I would continue having pain. I could get Endometrial Abalation. Basically, they put this big wire wand thing up the cervix, into the uterus and expand the wire part to fit the inside of the uterus. They then send radio waves at a precise frequency through the mesh for about 90 seconds, kind of 'burning' the lining. Close the mesh and pull out the wand. Done in 5 minutes. I may have spotting once in a while, but no regular periods. Can't have kids ( if pregnancy is to occur, most OBs will do abortions since the procedure makes an accidental pregnacy a risk to mother and child). But, again, pain is not addressed. Because I'm not having a period, cramps should be lessened, but it isn't garunteed. And last a Partial Hysterectomy. She would leave my ovaries to hopefully keep hormone production, but take out the rest. Not uterus = no period. No period + no uterus = no cramps. At least if my uterus IS in fact the problem.

I've had my kids. Husband has a vasectomy. And I told her if anything happened and I got a new husband, we can adopt because my body is NOT bearing any other children. Even though I'm young (29), she has been my Dr long enough to know that my husband and I are happy with what we have and seen first hand what I go through when I'm pregnant. She said the option is mine. I took home all the pamphlets, started doing research. I was going to go with Abalation until my period cam back again. I had only been off my period for 1 week, and when it came back I was at my mom's radiation appointment (cancer). I suddenly started cramping so bad that it made me sick. Now this is normal for me, but being at the cancer center, the Dr, nurses and 2 other patients in the waiting room got all worried (rightfully so).

That's it, I'm done. Hysterectomy, here I come.

Please switch doctors, this is ridiculous. Would you be ok being on pain meds long term? Cuz this is just retarded. Your pain needs to be managed until you get a procedure to minimize/get rid of it-Tylenol only goes so far. I wouldn't give her one more cent. Go to a less sadistic ob-she IS an ob, right?-or to a pain management clinic with your records. Worse case scenario, you can go to the ER if it's unbearable. I'm so disgusted as a nurse to read about doctors like her, I hope you feel better and make the decision of what to do with your goodies while medicated and rational.

OMG, I'm sorry you have had to struggle with this! Bodies can be such a blessing and a nuisance. How much longer until you have it done? Will she not prescribe pain medication to tide you through?

Ugh, I hope you get this resolved quickly and safely. Gentle hugs!

I totally feel ya. I used to have super heavy, long, and painful periods as a teen and wanted to pull my hair out that nobody would listen or help me. And I have short cycles so sometimes I'd have a period twice in the five week months. It was torture! It was so bad I wanted a hysterectomy before I even had kids...

Well birth control helped a lot in lightening the bleeding, easing the pain, and regulating my periods.

I agree with sweetjulia you may want to get a second opinion before getting such a permanent type of surgery especially if there are other less invasive options. I don't see why she can't give you prescription pain meds to use during your period it's not like youre going to be doping up multiple times a day every day. she can at least give you something for 7 days once a month.

Important tip- stay on the hormone replacement therapy the docs prescribe. My mom had a hysterectomy in 1987 & never took any of the prescribed meds. It has affected her in a negative way, to put it mildly.

One question, do you have polycystic ovaries? My wife had similar issues and it was controlled by taking a drug normally used for diabetes. A side effect of the med is testosterone suppression.

Also be aware of fallen bladder. I'll never understand why surgeons will not do a bladder tack with the hysterectomy rather than wait for you to pee your pants every time you move.

If you are prone to adhesions, things can actually get worse. My wife has a fistula, (a hole formed of scar tissue) connecting her bladder to her vagina. Her other health issues make it unlikely a surgeon will be willing to make a surgical repair.

If it's ovarian cysts doing this the surgery will stop the bleeding and cramps but other issues may start.

Not saying hysterectomy isn't an answer, but be damn sure. Hysterectomy can bring a whole new set of issues into the game.

As Julia asked, is she a GP or an OB/GYN?

^She sounds like a GP without terrible reproductive pain I had the same issue trying to get pain meds from my very male GP for endometriosis. Could barely get 0.5 of Ultram, which is like 0.5 of jack shit. Fuck that, found a lady who has it as well, I'm good now.

I've had my uterus removed and I couldn't be happier about it. No more periods from hell, no more cramps. I still have my ovaries and so I still ovulate and have all my normal hormones levels, and should technically get PMS, but I don't even notice and have no idea when I'm even ovulating. The decision was an easy one for me. I often forget that other women have to deal with periods! I have no negative side effects from the surgery, although it did take me several months to fully recover. Shit, if it wasn't medically necessary I would've elected to do it voluntarily if given the option.

also I had my surgery done by an OBGYN. I would recommend making sure you have a good surgeon, because there are risks of complications like scar tissue from the surgery. I had a great surgeon and have no complications three years later. Can't even see the scars!

It can also be done trans-vaginally....no external scars at all.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond.

The main issue with pain meds out here, is when you actually need them they are tough to get. The county I'm in has a horrible drug problem so Drs are hesitant. And it doesn't help that I have rehab stops from my teens (separate issues). I could get Vicodin if I really wanted it from my mom. But there is no way I'm going ask to take pain management medication from someone that truly NEEDS them. Does it suck for me, Yes. But I went through the same thing for my Gallblader removal. Got a Morphine button in the hospital and a week later they wanted me to take Ibuprophen. And best case scenario in the ER is a shot of Demerol and getting sent home. I know you were trying to help Julia. (Mush appreciated, I can tell it is something you are passionate about) But this county is nuts.

It has been my OB that I have been seeing for this the whole time. You don't get a boob job from someone that specializes in noses, right? I have been seeing her for about 8 years now. I was actually referred to her by the Health Dept. when I needed a LEEP. The only reason she is even letting me go with such a permanent option is because she knows I'm done with having kids and knows my family history. I know I didn't mention it in the original post (probably should have) but 3 aunts and 1 cousin have had partial/total hysterectomies. I'm getting it done in the beginning of April. But we have been discussing the options it for a while.

I think I would have it done already if I hadn't had that no insurance period. That right there was about 4 months of doing nothing. If I remember correctly, the ultrasound was to check for polyps, cysts, or fibroids. But the results were all normal. I was really hoping the birth control would help. It would be awesome to not get surgery. But I'm just getting so sick of all of it. I was really optimistic and hoping that once my period was normal I could get a Dr to focus on the pain management if it still existed. But the last surprise bleed just tossed me over the edge.

Thank you Fuzzy for the warnings of possible problems. I've been searching for whatever info I can find, but haven't seen the bladder issues listed as a possible complication. I can't even really find any after surgery details. Like how mobile one can be when they get home, what is the sex life like after, possible complications like mentioned above. I think I need to find a good support site instead of one that is like an eduacational pamphlet. Getting a patient point of view is usually a vastly different perspective.

I'm just glad I have a job (and husband) that lets me take the night off if needed. I'd be fired from a vanilla job by now.

I just think it's nuts how hard it is to find good info. I have found a couple of review sites, but the comments post procedure are only about 1 paragraph long. The ones that get descriptive are the botch jobs, figures right? I can't wait for it to get done though. I just have a feeling that this is the right choice. I'll come back after it is done so I can share what happens.

In the meantime, I've gotten lucky and the weather has been so bad that the days I've been in pain my manager hasn't even called to get me to work. And my regular customers (yes, I finally got some) are being super supportive and scheduling around my pain. I really hope I can get into work during March though. I'm already having to cut back to 2 nights because of Hubby's schedule, so I may just force myself to work through the pain if it's possible.

I don't know about reviews, but if you want statistics, those are my bread and butter. Just say the word and I'll see if I can put the incidence of complication numbers in a format that makes sense to somebody that doesn't crunch numbers for a living.

If you want me to break it down, just let me know what medical system you are in...US, Canada, EU, etc.

    Default Re: Getting a Hysterectomy

So I finally got my surgery done yesterday! It was a very long day. I was supposed to get my surgery done at 1pm, but my Dr got called in to assist on another surgery first thing in the morning and there were complications during the surgery before me. The nurses felt really bad about me waiting and tried to accommodate me as best they could. Since there was so much lag in time, they found a Dr that had a brief video on his iPhone of my procedure. The patient wasn't shown, but I could see them using the robot and the TV view of where the site they were working on.

So I got my Uterus, Fallopian tubes, and cervix removed laparoscopically with the DaVinci robot. My Dr wanted to keep my ovaries in to try to keep my hormone production normal for as long as possible. My surgery lasted about an hour and a half starting from the time they administered anesthesia to getting me to the recovery room. So, no issues!

I was given the option to stay overnight or remain outpatient since it was so late. My SIL was watching my kids and had to be at school this morning (in High School and it is an hour from where I live) so I decided to just remain outpatient. They wanted me to get up an around by myself and pee about 500cc's before I could go. It took a few hours, but it finally happened and I was free!

I'm on a 6 week recovery schedule. Lots of water and rest. It is really easy to tear the internal stitches and if they do tear I'll have to go back into surgery to fix it. No lifting more than 20 lbs. Nothing in my vagina - no sex, tampons, or douching. I really need to take it easy and not over exert myself. I was wanting to go back to work in a few weeks, but decided to wait the full 6 weeks. I'm the type of person that thinks things are all good and will get bold before my time is up. So I'll just eliminate the urge to to anything that can hurt me at work by not working.

Overall, it isn't too bad. I had 8 or 9 small incisions on my middle abdomen. If they heal like my gall bladder scars did, they will be barely noticeable. They are already getting a tad bit itchy, yay healing! I'm full of gas still so it kind of hurt to burp and I have some pressure inside from it. I also think dome of the discomfort is from my organs shifting into new positions. So I've been trying to carefully alternate my Ibuprophen and Vicodin when it gets rough. When it comes to bleeding, it has only been slight spotting. Anything more, especially clots, I need to call my Dr about. I've been peeing more frequently, but less volume than I usually do. It hurts, but I blame that on the catheter. So far it hasn't been a horrible experience.

Recovery has been ok. My Dr's office called me today to check on my recovery and see if I had any questions. When I do Have pain it is predominantly on my right side. It is a spot that I I frequent issues with pain before, so I asked if that was normal. Since I had the robotic surgery, they were able to cut through minimal muscle tissue but it is still possible that it is muscle or organ bruising. It could also be where the tube for the gas was placed so a gas bubble could be building up. They use gas to inflate the insides during surgery and can't get rid of every last bit before they stitch a person up. It can take about a week for it to work it's way out completely. She actually warned me that the gas pains could move up into my chest, back, or shoulders as it dissapates. She reminded me to take it easy, keep up the fluids, and call if there are any issues. Other than that, I've been good.

I've actually had some times when I went like 6 hours without meds until last night. My kids are being good for me. It seems like even the 2 year old understands that something is different. Definitely trying to take it easy. I'll update in a few more days.

Aurora I hope you are feeling better Gas X will get the gas out. I took it as soon as I got home from the hospital and every 6 hours for 2 days. The gas all came out! haha That was the worst pain-the gas pain.

I know this post is too late to help you Aurora but it may help someone else. Actually, it can still help you.

There is a website that explains everything about hysterectomies, articles, a very active forum, tons of information. I don't know if I'm allowed to post the name here or not. I'll wait to see if someone says it's alright and then I'll post it here.

When I found that website it made everything less scary. I was able to do all my research and I felt very prepared and confident once my surgery day arrived.

Two weeks post op. I'm still taking 1 pain killer a day. It sucks because I would have been off of them a week ago if I hadn't gotten sick. I've been coughing and sneezing like crazy, to the point that it seems like it strains my muscles once in a while. The upside is that I know that is where my pain is coming from. It isn't the same horrible pain I was experiencing before so I know there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Other than that, my Dr said that I'm healing great! My abdominal incisions look great. No persistent fevers. I've had a couple of low ones from me being sick. They didn't last long (took tylenol and they go away) and were a few days ago.

I'm cleared to start light yoga! Workout (hopefully) begins in the morning. She actually cleared me work too. As long as I stay off stage until my internal checkup (in 1 month). Still no heavy lifting. So when I do my yoga or work, I will need to keep taking it easy. Frequent rest breaks. I'll probably go back to work next week though.
