Default my club made me sign some kind of hourly wage contract

recently got rehired at one of my old clubs, where there was a change in ownership. The manager/ house mom told me that some things have changed, and they made me sign a bunch of paperwork. At least two things had to do with some kind of contract that said they are paying me an hourly wage (plus overtime), which they are definitely not doing. I asked them to print me copies and they said OK but they haven't brought it up again, i think they're hoping i'll just forget.

Seems really sketchy to me. Do you know what this is about?

I'm not going to complain though… i make way more money at the club as an independent contractor than i would as an employee. I just don't want this come back in the future to bite me in the butt because i signed something that isn't true.

Stand in the office until you get copies of your contract. Don't let them blow you off. Managers WILL intentionally withhold copies of contracts from dancers so that you will not know what your rights are -- so you won't be able to stand up for yourself when they try to exploit you.

Yeah, you definitely want to get your hands on what you signed. It's good practice to read everything you sign carefully and get a copy for yourself as soon as you've signed.

Since you're now an employee, it's very likely you were signing tax forms for your withholding, meaning that the club is claiming to the IRS that they are paying you that hourly wage and sending in the appropriate taxes on it. If they're not actually paying it out to you, that's a problem since you won't claim it on your taxes. That could very easily send up a red flag.

I would report them. Or contact a lawyer!

You need to get that contract and point out to them that they are NOT paying you that wage, and that you need to be classed as an IC. They sound like they are up to some shady stuff and you don't want to play with that come tax time. Also, usually when a club is legitimately paying you a minimum wage, they are taking some higher percentage of your tips than from the IC girls, so check on that as well.

Ugh report them. My theory is that they are using the paperwork to help launder money, which means a possible IRS penalty for you but yatchts and mountains of coke for them. People have been pulling scams like this since contractual paperwork became a thing in society.
