Yo, not sure if already been posted but I'm going to browse through. It mentions several members of SW by name and I believe used SW as a research tool.....http://commons.emich.edu/cgi/viewcon...xt%3Dtheses%22
So what stands out? Does anyone care?

Ugh, I just read this. Ivory Tower academia is so annoying. I think this part of the abstract says it all:
"Significant unexpected findings included the fact that strippers feel that their job is similar to service type jobs."
Shocking, huh? The author was getting her MA in Criminology, btw. Not at all surprised that she went into depth about bias in data collection but didn't touch on bias in researchers' analysis of data.
Also: "Similar to postmodernism, 'cyberspace' is here to stay." Hahahahahahahahahaha. LOL. Hahaha.
Wait, more lols: "Strippers will dress and act in a way that expresses their sexuality; the make-up, the clothes, the walk, and even talking with pride are all common." Imagine us licentious harlots talking with pride when we should be silent with shame!!!
This was ridiculous.
I thought it was interesting the data collected for this research paper was solely from this forum. No field studys, no in person interviews except with what looks like the site owner at the end.
Cotdamn trolls analyzing me for their "research" and I ain't even know it.
But nah I see the paper is kinda old like 2006 anyways.
“Cook for him like a housewife, fuck him good like a nympho….pay the rent and the car note, he invests in me like crypto”

There are some hardcore stalkers on this forum. Including the one I will nickname "Beelzubub" who has a sticky all for himself.
To be fair, this forum was pretty famous in the mid-2000s so I could see someone leaning on it for data/input. Exotic dancers used to be a hot topic. Now I think the Internet has shed so much light on all of the adult industry.......it's all very passe. Even terms like "sugar baby" and "MILF" are joke fodder for stupid tweenaged boys.
I didn't read the paper but all I wanted to say was, dancers deserve respect. I hope the next gen of ladies has benefited from the group efforts of all of us to humanize dancers.
The standard of research that will pass for master's level is just incredible sometimes.

My favorite Master's thesis research that turned into a book was a guy named Venkatesh who hung out with crack selling gangs in inner city Chicago. Once they decided not to kill him for bumbling into their hood, they let him learn about their culture.
In other words, some non traditional research has very special fruits....other times it is a short-cut style way of doing things.
Honestly a lot of dancers and ex-dancers tend to be secretive or unwilling to share about their lives- considering the problems I have encountered being halfway open about stripping...I can understand the desire for privacy.

will read this later but i like that she dedicated it to her mum and dad. lolololol
also
'Stripping literature has primarily focused on the external rewards of stripping and has found that the primary motivation for engaging in stripping is the economic gain.'
awwww shit who'd thunked it!

^I know I've always stripped cause I just really like grinding on fat old guys, never thought about the financial aspect of it...
I glanced through and it looks pretty shitty but I understand not doing interviews since I doubt she could get any with her thesis statement.... the only positive side is, at least it's not a autobiography written by a rich girl who stripped for one year to see what the 'dirty life' is like and write about it. How many people have done that? Ugh.

I'm so down for some sort of site-wide verification system after reading this.
That paper was wack.
I noticed spelling mistakes in a graduate level paper him and his professor needs to kick rocks.
And I don't think it's valid to conduct research from a forum where a) the people used in the study didn't give consent to have their posts used for research b) making inferences about stripper life based solely on forum posts.
Um I post on a forum partly in the tone of my stripper persona and hell I've even posted when I was drunk so it's not an accurate representation.
That's like a troll analyzing your Facebook posts and thinking they know the real you.
Or like me watching the kardashians on tv all day and thinking I know them.
And I realize most strippers like their privacy and wouldn't agree to be interview for research but I bet there are some that would. I mean how the hell Lisa Ling get all those people to participate in her documentary? And show their faces on national tv?!? He should have got some more money to make this better.
This research study is lame I give it a D-
“Cook for him like a housewife, fuck him good like a nympho….pay the rent and the car note, he invests in me like crypto”

^ I reported your post MyButter because I totally agree- maybe the mods will have a look at this and consider the advantages of verification. I certainly feel uncomfortable knowing that posts may be published esp without consent![]()

Yeah... I know it's probably a lot easier said than done! Sometimes I do think it would be nice if this forum wasn't so public though.

"True sexiness has many facets-confidence, strength, intelligence, and humor. It isn’t just about trying to look sexy; it’s an art and one becomes skillful in it when she realizes that there are all these conflicting elements that all come together to make something magical"-Dita Von Teese

I want to be awarded a Master's degree for doing my review of the literature on stripper web too! Wouldn't even feel like work.

Well, that was very 20th century thinking. I'm tired of the western world recycling all this "sex is bad" messaging. Being a stripper and visiting strip clubs is just another form of entertainment. Strippers strip mostly because it is a fun way to earn a lot of money. Can I have my Master's Degree now?
ETA: "Strippers have their own jargon." Oh please! Every career has it's own jargon. Just spend 10 minutes with someone in the military, and you'll bump up against a foreign language of acronyms. Hell, the marines (the military people I know) even have special words to talk about articles of clothing that no one working in retail would recognize.

I guess if one throws enough shit at a wall, some of it will stick. Digging through all of this brought out some interesting factoids.
First, the idea of using internet boards for serious academic dissertations. While the internet is a relatively new (and rapidly growing) communication medium, using anonymous postings (I never saw any reference attributing posts to any "screen name".) raises questions on how one would footnote them. Then the board members may not be that representative of that group as a whole. (In SW case, SW members may be different from average stripper or cam performer.) One professionally oriented DB that I belong to has member initiated polls. The consensus of the polls (yea or nay on a particular course of action.) differed from the action actually taken by the larger group as a whole.
When perusing through authors footnotes, I see a lot of old sources used, dating back to the 1970's in many cases. This indicates a dearth of recent serious academic studies on the adult industry in general, and stripping in particular. Then again, author may not have used good recent sources. I suspect the later, as she states that the number of clubs doubled from 1987-1992. That seems like a dated reference frame for a 2006 research paper. There were several resources available on club directories going back to the 1990's (EDN, Tuscl) that could demonstrate a further doubling of the clubs from 1992- early 2000's. That data would have been more relevant. Well, what do I know, I'm only a long time customer with a Bachelors Degree.![]()
I'm right 96% of the time.I don't sweat
the other 5% .......................

Wow. Was so worried I'd have to write intelligent, quality papers when I got to grad school. Guess I have nothing to fear lol.

That guy is a douchebag.
A better thesis topic would be centered around the social retardation and dysfunction that plagues a large percentage of strip club customers (usually the cheap ones, but not always). Sub topics may include, but are not limited to, sociopathy, psychosis, misogyny, perpetuation of rape culture, antisocial disorder, megalomania, etc.
I've witnessed these types firsthand, so don't get offended, this doesn't apply to all patrons. But you have to agree that asking a dancer where her parents live, where she went to high school, or if he can follow her home to "make sure she gets there safely" - yeah, right- are red flags of a sociopathic stalker. I am asked these questions quite frequently! Not to mention the verbal abuse or attempted assault. Fuck these guys, may they rot in pieces.
