    Default Audition Denied

    Hi all!

This is my first post on the forum, and I look forward to getting to know some of you lovely ladies, and also, getting over this very interesting turn of events! So, just a little background information, I am a pretty, thin, ethnically diverse (Puerto Rican and Japanese) lady in her 20's who is currently trying to gain admittance as a dancer in SF! Now, I have danced before (three months or so in Connecticut) and I thought I would have no trouble getting an audition, but boy was I wrong!!

    I have been to:

-Garden of Eden (Let me audition, but a small club with very handsy clientele)
-Condor Club (Got into the office for an audition, but was 'turned down' immediately/told to come in tomorrow when I spoke to the manager)
-Gold Club (Turned down at door and directed to Little Darlings)
-Penthouse (Turned down at door after calling in to obtain an audition)

Now that leaves me with a few more grabs at clubs, but I am trying to stay out of the seedy places, and I am kind of disheartened at the moment. I have plans at re-attempting an interview at the Condor Club (I was pretty nervous and another girl was being handed her paperwork when I made an entrance) but I was hoping to get some idea as to why the SF scene is giving me the cold shoulder.

I'm physically very small, with a pretty face, and short pink hair that is very much femme. I'm not gonna lie, I cried the entire way home on Bart because I looked so good for the audition and didn't even make the stage, even though all the men that came my way (and some that didn't) only had eyes for me.

    Any ideas/comments?

    -Kitsune Fae

How were you turned down? If it was with a "come back later," it's possible that they really did mean it. I'm not sure how SF is this time of year, but right now is quiet season in a lot of areas, so clubs aren't as open to hiring lots of new dancers.

Another thing - if you have dark skin, it's possible the clubs you're auditioning at only hire so many black/dark skinned ladies, and especially if it's a quiet season, they may be at their quota. Sad reality of many strip clubs.

Otherwise… Short pink hair is a pretty alternative look, so that could potentially be it too, I guess, especially if you're auditioning at clubs that have very mainstream looking dancers.

If you are as good looking in the face and body as you say you are then the only thing I could think of that would decrease your chances is the pink hair.

A girl once tried to work with a bright neon colored wig and the managers told her to take it off or go home. Some clubs are not open to extreme hair colors or styles.

Also hope it's not the more sinister reason shannadior mentioned which is an unfortunate reality that in some areas non white women have a harder time getting hired but SF is more liberal and diverse so it would shock me if this was the case. If that's the case they won't tell you but will come up with some bs excuse. In any rate you don't want to work at clubs like that anyways.

Did any of the clubs give you feedback?

The Condor Club's manager told me to 'come back tomorrow', and he sat down with me to explain to me the shifts he was looking to fill, ect. I explained to him that I was looking toward to the flexibility and that the days he had mentioned actually sounded perfect to me. He told me to come back tomorrow (which I didn't because I thought I would let any negative associations with me if there were any, pass) He gave me an application, and that was that. No biggie. Not what I wanted either. I tried not taking no for an answer, and he explained that it was too late (11 pm) and that it was a pretty empty club, and that he was gonna see me tomorrow. I thought he was just letting me down easily. The other places were even more brusque than that. They didn't even let me through the door. Needless to say, my hair is now chin length and a soft, pastel mauve haze.

The mauve color looks like it suits you better for getting hired than the blue or pink in my opinion

Hope it works out for you when you go back to the Condor

I would definitely go back to the Condor. 11pm is pretty late to go and get hired -- it's not like there's any point in hiring you and having you start working only for a couple of hours -- and it sounds like the manager actually spent a bit of time talking to you (rather than just telling you to come back later right away) and even gave you a specific date to return, so I don't think it was a total brush off. Could be wrong of course, but if you want to work there and nowhere else is biting, seems silly to not go back and at least try.

Thanks! Yes, the purple didn't quite suite my complexion, and the pink is so subtle.. almost a salmon apricot. I am planning on going back tomorrow night, and retrying. I know that my looks shouldn't be barring my entering the club, but I do think that maybe my manner is a little off. I thought I was being friendly but forthright, and I think maybe my approach is a tad off. Ant tips, hints, words or advice to get this job so I can make that dough will be greatly appreciated.

Also, please excuse the frontal nudity. I have no shame, and was wondering if they were acceptable to post.

The only feedback given to me was by a bouncer, who told me to stick with the first club that would hire me. I guess I look a little 'new' here, and I am! I've only been in California for a year, and this is my first time hitting up Broadway.

I dance in SF and you definitely need to change your hair. I can't remember the last time I saw a dancer with non natural color hair. You should also make sure your make up is on point. Your body looks great though.

The good news is you don't need to change your hair if you really love the style, just invest in a nice wig.

I'm about to start dancing in SF as well. I went and checked out Gold club and a couple other places downtown. I have to agree a little with littlelizard. I used to dance in Portland, Or and was used to seeing a lot of different looks and way more people with "alternative" styles (piercings, tattoos, non-natural hair color) but things here definitely seemed more "high-end" (?) I guess you could say. I think a more natural hair color would definitely help! OR like lurkingtitties said, a nice wig! Good luck!

I think you have a greater chance of getting hired if you wear a long-haired, naturally-colored wig for the audition. You can ditch the wig after you get hired. Walk in wearing a sexy-but-tasteful outfit (not too casual, slutty, crazy stylish, over-the top in any way) with civilian heels, matching bag(s). Be completely confident. Have an attitude like you totally belong/ feel comfortable there; run an internal monologue in your head about how you already work there/ have worked there before. Wear fake eyelashes, do your nails perfectly, and mostly-do your stripper makeup before you even walk in. You can do the rest in the dressing room before you get on stage; boost the contrast on everything. '

I agree with the natural hair, and good makeup, with a tasteful outfit. SF is not alt friendly.

The hair is probably the issue. Niche market.
I've danced in SF and I'd recommend a blonde wig or dark ( if better fit for you ) long wig.

Make sure you have a local phone / address too!
