Default Oregon strippers take then next step

There are two proposed bills in the Oregon state legislature aimed at work place safety and protections of Oregon strippers (and other small venue entertainers such as comedians, bands, dancers from other disciplines, puppet shows or bag pipe playing, unicycle riding, Darth Vader helmet wearing entertainers).

The strippers will get their day to talk to the committee on labor and business on Wednesday about passing two bills that covers Independent Contractors under the OSHA umbrella for minimum work place safety, including a poster that outlines what a business can and cannot control over their independent contractor entertainers required to be posted in dressing rooms of every strip club in the state.

This poster will let every dancer know what is and isn't legal control over the scope of work in regards to being an IC. It will also have an anonymous tip line to report violations. OSHA will be responsible for checking the building for safety and cleanliness of IC workers as well as employee workers.

There will be no licensing (at this time). We may have to keep fighting against licensing and/or being forced into employee status in the future, but for now, this is off the table.

The beauty of these bills is that it was created to protect strippers specifically from workplace abuses and safety issues. The majority of Oregon club owners are also on board with this proposed bill, as it adds a layer of protection from law suits.

I think that we got this one right. We are protecting workers w/o placing a burden on businesses who play by the rules.

This is cool as long as it means you can keep IC status and not be forced to become an employee stripper, from my admittedly little understanding.

The dancers overwhelmingly were anti-licensing and anti-forced-employee status. We had direct influence over this bill and club owners (with a few notable exceptions) were in total agreement with what the dancers proposed. The clubs who were opposed wanted zero oversight, so you can't really take that into consideration since the opponents are caught up in a law suit based on worker abuses.

I'm constantly surprised at those who work in academia and government don't understand the desire to remain an independent contractor. They don't get it. I kept hearing over and over about how dancers should "unionize." When it is explained that we aren't employees, so there is no need for an employee union, the overwhelming reaction is a lack of understanding how we earn a living. The question I kept hearing over and over was: "You only get paid in tips?"

Then they are amazed that we don't want a paycheck and prefer to earn our income directly from our fans/audience. I know that dancers are less risk averse than most people, but I'm not sure how to explain that natural lack of fear to someone can't envision a life without a PERS retirement plan.

I really hope there wont be a push for licenses or employement status for dancers. I already feel queezy about the possible background checkup. But I'm glad to see there will be some better rules enforced hopefully.
