Default On tour in a hotel and internet access

I am not incredibly tech savvy but something that came to my attention this morning has freaked me the hell out. I was on my laptop communicating with clients on day 2 of my tour when I suddenly see "used in 1 other location" in my gmail account. What the effff?! I am now on my phone as I type this because I'm a bit scared the hotel has been viewing my emails. There is a 24/7 security guard at this hotel too so I feel incredibly uncomfortable As it is. I am not sure if Its possible for the hotel to view my internet access on my laptop or is it possible?

I am at a 3 star hotel because hotwire hot rates fooled me with a non refundable "4 star" booking (always the cheap hotels like this one are the scariest when it comes down to cracking down on prostitution). They also have security cameras throughout the hotel. Any advice would be helpful. I have appointments today and now I am nervous to go through with them.

When it says that, it could just be that you're connected to the same gmail account on another device - like your phone maybe?

From what I remember reading about this elsewhere, hotels can look at your internet usage - like, they can see what sites you're visiting, but I highly doubt they can actually read your emails. That would be a severe invasion of privacy, and if anyone could do that just because you're on their network... well, what would be the point of passwords? In order to remotely view exactly what you're doing on-screen, there'd have to be a virus on your computer, or they'd have to hack into it - which would be illegal and a tremendous waste of hotel staff's time. So I think the only way they'd get any suspicions of escort activity would be if you specifically were visiting escort-type sites like p411.

But just checking a gmail account, they would have no way of knowing that it's not just your personal account if they see you visited gmail.

Hiya, In future though, I do not know how it works or what are the companies in the USa but in the UK we use mobile internet and it would be a good idea to buy your own internet dongle or mobile broadband device. Also it would be a very good idea to get a good vpn/ proxy service. Hide your ass I hear are rats and if anything goes wrong they would sing like canaries.

What Aurora said. Yes, hotels do track where you have been but they can't check your email. Don't worry about email but stay off P411, date-check, VH, Backpage etc.

Most standard commercial firewalls simply log website pages, so unless some hotel has some pretty sophisticated equipment and/or programs, which is extremely unlikely, the odds are good that hotel employees don't have access to usernames and passwords. Most hotel owners are highly unlikely to enable their employees to hack into the websites or monitor the data transmissions of hotel guests due to privacy and liability reasons, among others.

Having said that, these same wi-fi systems are also pretty easy to hack. In fact, someone tried to access my online banking information after I accessed it using a hotel wi-fi at a Marriott resort 5 years ago. My online account was locked after 5 unsuccessful login attempts. The only reason they did not get in is because they did not know the answers to my security questions, which were not required when accessing my account from my own computer but were when the hacker used his/her "unknown" computer.

I agree with others who have recommended mobile broadband options. I have issued wireless USB modems for my business laptops and they are much more secure than wi-fi. They aren't cheap, but IMHO they are worth it. You can also use them pretty much anywhere you have a cell phone signal, though they do have data restrictions and aren't ideal for streaming video. But for normal website activity they are fine.

Well, yeah, any script kiddie with aircrack-ng can get into hotel wifi and start packet sniffing.

    I prefer the VPN option.
