    Default A DJ question

If you just started a new club and the dj is playing you crappy music even.after you told him your genre preferences and you tell him "I don't like the music your playing me" do you think its rude? How should I have approached him because he got mad at me and told me to make a list.

My bf complained about this one girl all the time when she was on his shift. After every single set, she'd come up and say she didn't like whatever he had played, make vague suggestions, go on stage, and start complaining again. It was annoying as fuck because she had no real suggestions for what she might actually want but wanted to complain.

So from his perspective as the DJ... No, it's not rude to say you don't like the music, but a) give him several bands to play (that you will like all their songs), b) write him a list of specific songs, and c) throw him a few extra bucks.

I've entered into a few standoff situations with DJs before, where if they blatantly refuse to play what I asked for, I refuse to tip and it eventually gets hashed out. If he's being a colossal dick on purpose, I'd go that direction. But otherwise, you'll catch more flies with honey and I'd suggest my prior ideas.

Don't take it personal... Make a list with a lot of songs if you don't want him to choose anything. I literally probably have over 50+ songs. Be specific and polite and tell him what you want. For instance, I told my DJ that I would prefer only my music to be played on my sets and I don't want to dance to the same song twice in a night. I always tip the DJ a little extra because I'm always having my DJ download new music for me and just to show appreciation.

I'm a bitch. If I tell you once & tip you then you STILL don't play what I'm paying you for, guess what?! You're not getting tipped until you learn to play what I want & ask for

KaraLynn is right tho ^ it's best to ask nicely with a few bucks then if he's being a dick then I wouldn't keep paying him.

This is SO true! I have worked with so many DJs who have issues just as bad as some dancers. I had a DJ 'take me aside' and ask if we were 'having issues' at my last club. I had no idea we had a little fight going on lol DJs are the least of my concern when I'm at work. I always had to be super nice to him or I was afraid he would think I was mad at him and start acting weird again. I had another DJ get offended because I picked my own music and didn't just let him 'do his thing'. It can get pretty ridiculous. So.. no I think you saying bluntly that you didn't like the music was fine. For some reason & in my experience the bouncers and managers let things slide and don't care too much but the DJs take things so personally and can be really dramatic.

I have jumped off the stage. I only danced to alternative or classic rock, yet on DJ decided to play some shit. I then yelled at him because I brought in my music, and labeled so no reason this should happen.

Are you tipping him well? That's normally the first thing I would suggest. Other than that, he might just be playing music because there is a certain type of crowd he is trying to appeal to.

Money talks. Just tip him well and it will change.

It's painful to hand over hard-earned dollars, but it'll make your nights and your stage routines easier. Think of it like an investment in your own advertising.

I tell DJ's twice if they're fucking up. I'm cool about it the first time and am really specific about what to play. The second time, I'm not quite so nice about it. The third time, I refuse to go onstage and deduct the fine from the DJ's tip.

I've butted heads with some seriously dickwad DJ's and I always win. They fuck with my music, they fuck with my money. It's no secret that dancers subsidize everybody else's wages so fucking with dancers' money is the last thing they should want to do.
