Umm I'm pretty sure all the good professional type poles (aka, ones you can do tricks on without it falling down) are at least $300. You might be able to get one used on Craigslist. Xpole or Platinum Stages are supposed to be good.

45mm or 50mm doesn't matter, most girls try to get whatever size their club uses so they're used to it.

Seconding Selina. If you want a good pole, you're gonna have to dish out some cash for an Xpole, I don't think any pole dancing stripper - unless she is just starting out - is going to have a cheap pole. I'm thinking of like Carmen Electra's crappy pole, hahaha. If you want bang for your buck, get a good pole. It's not too expensive, and if you're going to spend $180, you might as well spend $120 extra for pro quality with a good reputation.

If you'll be practicing at home to dance in a club, go with the 50 mm.

And absolutely save up and buy a professional-quality pole. I've had mine for several years and it's as sturdy and shiny as the day I bought it (x-pole).

Seriously, please get a good quality pole. If it breaks while you're on it, you could injure yourself really badly.

Never ever EVER get a pole simply because it's cheap. Accidents will occur, and then you'll probably injure yourself so badly you can never dance again. Yes, a proper pole (like the X-pole) is expensive, but consider a down payment for safety :) You get what you pay for!

There are several considerations when purchasing a pole:
    Spin- static, spin, or both

Width- the difference between 45mm and 50mm is actually bigger thank you'd think. For someone with smaller hands, the 45mm has the most comfortable grip, but you need to grip with the legs more. With the 50mm, you need more hand grip to actually cling to the pole, but the legs work a bit less :P Industry standard, I believe, is 50mm.

Material: there are several material choices for poles. In order of grippiness (least to most, although it can change from dancer to dancer), there's stainless steel, chrome, titanium gold, and brass. If you're new to pole dancing, I'd recommend either brass or titanium gold. Up-on-the-pole tricks are much harder on stainless steel and chrome since there's less grip for the dancer. Keep in mind that brass is usually much more expensive than other materials, and I believe SCs use stainless steel because it's shiiiny.

    Transportability: permanent or removable?

Finally, maybe consider some lessons before trying it at home? You can very easily injure yourself if you have no idea what you're doing, and an instructor can spot you for more difficult moves. My pole instructor has prevented many a disaster with her quick reflexes and strength :D

Try Craigslist or Kijiji. I just got an x-pole for 75 bucks and it's in perfect condition! I think because pole dancing is becoming so trendy, a lot of people are buying poles and then selling them online once they got over the trend.
