Default So Called "Victims" of Sex Trafficking Are Lying?!

Mods--- I meant to post this here

There was the infamous case of Chong Kim. A woman whose making millions on speaking tours, etc. after she revealed that she was sex trafficked at 19. Reporters, journalists, etc soon found many holes in her story and to many, she is a fraud. But even a film on sex trafficking called "Eden" was made about her in 2012.

Recently, I saw a documentary on sex trafficking. The girls all had pimps but some also discussed backpage and Eros, and I hate to say it, but I got this feeling that a lot of them were open to sex work but things didn't work out so they cried foul to save their asses the embarrassment/ shame from family/friends. I mean, one girl flew to Vegas to meet her supposed "pimp." In this age of social media, ya mean to tell me she didn't do the Tumblr tags first to at least get a second opinion? Another chick was at a Ivy league university when she got "sucked in"

What do y'all think? There is this ongoing "war on sex work" that is funneling millions to law enforcement agencies. And all the stories surround "the girl next door" getting victimized by big, bad pimps, when up and down Instagram I see girls eagerly boasting about their daily earnings from Eros and through sugaring.

    Thoughts?

Was the documentary that you watched called "Tricked" on Netflix? I saw that the other day and was pissed.

While it was bringing an emotional and very serious issue to the table (sex trafficking), it totally bashed consensual sex workers.

I saw Tricked the other day too. I actually thought it did a (mostly) good job of representing what a problem sex trafficking is. Sure, it blurred a lot of lines between trafficked sex work and consensual sex work (to the point of being offensive to sex workers at a couple of points,) but it seemed good enough that it should be a beneficial watch for anyone OUTSIDE of adult entertainment. It brings to light the fact that most street level prostitutes (who were the main focus) do feel, to some degree or another, forced to do what they do and are victims, rather than being scummy people.

As for whether or not other "trafficked" women are "faking": What about domestic violence victims? They made the choice to be with their partner. They decided to stay during the early warning signs. Most of them defend their partners at some point when people say/question that he's abusive. They usually have people (classmates, coworkers, family, friends, etc) that they could tell and ask for help from. A lot of them present their relationship as being "amazing" and "perfect" on social media. Does the fact that they made those decisions make them any less a victim?

I knew that story of Chong Kim didn't add up when I first heard it. I even had an argument with my friends because I thought the story was fake!

With regards to the point of wether or not you are a victim if it was your choice to be with the victimizer I think technically you are. Someone might stay with an abusive spouse but it's still illegal for the spouse to assault them. It's still illegal for pimps to pimp. Even in kidnapping cases some victims didn't escape when they had an opportunity for example Elizabeth Smart, Jaycee Dugard, Shawn Hornbeck they are definitely still victims in my opinion.

I think consensual sex workers (and I mean consensual not influenced or groomed by someone else), liars, and sex trafficking victims should all be treated as separate issues. Someone pretending to be a victim should be of no consequence to an actual victim as well a victim should be of no consequence to a woman (or man) who has chosen to make a living in the sex industry.

One example of a woman lying doesn't automatically discount the sex trafficking problem. Think about the women being used as sex slaves by ISIS. I don't believe for a moment they have any viable options other than committing suicide.

Excellent points! On the film Tricked, the film was incredibly racist and biased. The fact that its considered a documentary is laughable. Nearly 50% of sex trafficking victims are women of color while whites only make up about 30% of cases but not only did the filmmakers only give a platform for white victims and excluded black women, but the black women potrayed in the film appeared to be happily content (smiling, drinking, participating in the Players Ball)

In fact nearly all sex trafficking discussions in the US only seem to focus on white women cause you know, surely the all american girl must bring on the tears when shes captured by the big, black pimp. By the way, so all the pinps are black ? Lol, Amerika.

Perhaps our perceptions of Tricked were a little different.

I was annoyed that all of the women interviewed post-prostitution were white, but I didn't see the black women as being portrayed as happy/content, either. At the Players' Ball they filmed, they were looking down at the ground like slaves or dogs - not something I perceive as being "happy." The woman in the limo who was drunkenly laughing and "talking game" is later shown still in the limo with an expression that appeared remarkably sad to me. The only one who actually seemed content to me was the one who shared a moment of kindness in the form of a back rub with her pimp.

I was pissed about all the pimps portrayed being black men, though.

You mean a pimp? I thought all the white men featured were law enforcement or johns?

Guess I got distracted and misinterpreted that part. I wonder how many other viewers did the same?

He wasn't a pimp. He was a client. Either way, not a single interview with a black prostitute or white pimp. Its very clear that the directors of this documentary had a racist agenda.

Both the client and the pimp were white. I just re-watched it to make sure.
