    Default Found a tooth!

Did anyone lose a tooth? Just kidding. But I found a human molar in my yard this morning while I was watering my plants. It looks like it had been buried. This house was built around 1900 and I find stuff in the dirt all the time, but it's usually glass fragments and bottle caps. The tooth was just resting in the middle of the pathway, as though someone dropped it.

What should I do with it?

I have no idea, but that's really cool (and creepy).

Edit: did you dig around any further? I doubt it's anything sinister but ya never know. I wouldn't call the police or anything for a tooth, but if you were to find more... maybe.

Um seriously turn it in to the cops. It's probably a lost "Tooth Fairy Tribute" but it might belong to a missing person.

^ You think so? I'm trying to figure out if it's an adult tooth or a baby tooth, but I'm not a dentist. I have found bone fragments in the dirt before too but I figured they were just chicken bones or something. Now I'm really creeped out!

That's a huge molar. It must have come out of a mutant large dude.

Not a human tooth, it's a tooth from a horse.

its also older, rough guess from looking at the wear on it as well as the accumulation of dirt and break down/discoloration of the roots Id guesstimate anywhere between 10 to 100 years give or take depending on conditions. but again really rough guess without looking at it and or properly carbon dating it * pulls from her years of anthropology

OMG, that's creepy. Reminds me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre when those kids find those teeth in the yard. lol

Or maybe the tooth fairy dropped it a long time ago?

BTW, salz, how do you know it's a horse tooth? Enlighten us!

its an obvious grazers tooth, human molars are smaller, have distinct ridges to reflect an omnivorous diet so more peaks for mincing meats and harder things like tubers and such and smaller roots. the bowled out wear to the enamel and crown indicates a rotational repetitive grinding motion of the jaw to break down plant mater.

horse roots tend to be longer but that could also have broken off easily. and its alittle small but could easily be from a juvinile or a small breed like shetland, though its also similar to smaller deer and sheep but really really looks to belong to a Ungulated herbavore none the less

I did notice the tooth is so flat compared to typical molars. I thought it might've been due to poor dentistry and a fibrous diet. This neighborhood used to be very rural (think There Will Be Blood) so I was like, "Maybe some cowboy lost a shoutout and his body was buried here and then the house happened to be built over the grave!"

I love how this thread is like CSI: StripperWeb.

Used to help my buddy out with his horses while I was growing up.

@Morrigan, your probably correct about it coming from a juvenile. Just like humans horse lose their "baby" teeth, when their mature teeth start coming in. You'll find them in the feed trays all the time.

^ I'm surprised to see it resurrected! I had no idea what to do with the tooth so I just plopped it into the dirt of one of my potted plants. I mean, what DOES one do with found teeth?

I haven't found any other, um, body parts in my yard... yet.
