    Default Getting DJ under control

Most of the DJ's at my club are awesome but, of course, we have a diva who thinks that he knows everything. Lately, he has this notion that he knows what I should dance to better than I do.

I've asked him nicely to play dubstep. I got shitty generic house. I yelled at him. I got shitty generic trap. When he played trap that had the N word littered throughout, was horribly degrading to women and celebrated drug use, I leaned against the pole and watched TV.

I have complained to management and got one actual dubstep song played. The rest of the night was trap. I've chosen my genre for a reason and did a lot of trial and error. I don't want his opinion or his "help."

We're having a big event this week and I'm scheduled to do a feature performance. He's the DJ. I know that he'll completely disregard any requests I make. I know he'll play shitty, inappropriate music. I need to either find a way to get him under control or find a way to back out of the feature, without fucking myself over.

Can you bring a CD and have him play only those songs?
Honestly, a lot of people don't know the difference between trap and dubstep.. I'm not surprised.

He knows the difference. We didn't have a problem until he decided I should dance to metal and I emphatically said no. He refused to play it for me and once he played it for a brand new dancer, while forcing metal on me. She hasn't been seen since, he still refuses to play dubstep for me and hasn't seen a tip since.

He knows exactly what it is and has a library of it that rivals mine. He just refuses to play it.

I am going to skip stage if the music isn't right and, if management insist on assessing a fine, direct them to him. What I'm really worried about is getting onstage for this feature and having him fuck it up. Everything has to be heavily choreographed and the wrong mysic will ruin it.

I was also thinking about approaching management and letting them know that failure to allow me to select my music puts my employment status into question. As an independent contractor, club staff doesn't have any right to dictate music selection (aside from general regulations for things like profanity and BPM) and that by allowing this DJ to override my directions, they become my employer.

I can see this backfiring on me but...

Don't tip him and get him fired. Ugh I have worked with a couple DJs like this and I never understand why they choose to act this way.

My first reaction is either someone's paying him to fuck w u or he got pissed at you for something.
That's why my first reaction to music choice is idgaf cuz it takes that power from them. Pouting over music only affects you, and the music bad DJ fight has gone on forever. Do toy really want to be that fighting with the DJ bitch?

I would think that your DJ would treat a feature show (for a club event, no less) differently than a run of the mill stage show (where, although it's annoying if he plays something you don't want, it doesn't ruin the night), so he won't fuck it up by playing whatever he wants. Still, I would bring him a CD/USB with the songs you need for the show and clearly tell him that these are the songs he is to play. Hell, get a manager to do it with you there if you can. Definitely let a manager know your concerns about the music for the feature show though. They may not care about a regular stage show, but an event is designed to make the club look good and bring in customers, so they'll be more likely to act on that.

^ You'd think. But, in his mind, this is his show and we're just hus backup dancers. Before I'd even been asked to do the feature, he insisted that he should play Sia. I like heaeing Sia in the car, but my style of dancing is totally incompatible with her music. And its completely inappropriate for any kind of BDSM.

I will be bringing a USB of the music I want, as its really awesome, yet obscure and there's no way he'll have it. If something else is played... I'll be in the DR right before so, I'll just stay there.

A friend of mine had a DJ who kept fucking with her music until she started paying extra on the already ridiculous $20 tipout (from 30 girls) he got.

Once she started throwing him an extra 5 every once in awhile, she got her music.

^ I used to tip him well, prior to this. And I still tip the other DJ's well. Like an extra 5% or so, unless they do something really huge and I tip a lot more.

Since he started trying to force me to dance to music I hate, he gets the minimum required tipout and the rest goes in the door girls tipjar.

Demanding more than the $20-40 I'm required to tip, just to get the genre right, is ridiculous. If he's not happy with the money he's making, he's more than welcome to strap on some heels and go on stage with a thong crammed up his ass. Humiliating girls on stage if they don't pay him not to amounts to extortion. And a piss poor attempt, at that.

I think you have an awesome point and I don't think it will backfire on you..so much than on him causing issues by not playing your music.

Ive only had this problem once and it was because I refused to sleep with the guy. It happened once and I never had a problem again.

It'll change for a set and then it goes right back to the ridiculous nonsense.
