    Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong or should be doing ? I plant in full sun with a trellis for the vines to climb up ?
    Small and shriveled fruits are usually a sign of pollination problems. There is a distinct difference between the majority of cucumber varieties which require open pollination, and a handful of cucumber hybrids which were developed to have 'sex with themselves' in greenhouses or when planted individually. See

    Pollination problems have been on the increase lately, supposedly attributable to an 'unexplained' but ongoing decline in the number of bees. This shortage of bees has been noted across the USA as well as in Europe. In some areas, farmers are now paying bee-keepers to maintain beehives on the farm property to assure adequate pollination of the farmer's crops. Gardeners of course have the option to 'manually pollinate', but it is time consuming and can damage plants if you aren't careful. Self-pollinating hybrids get around this.

    Oh, a compost bin sounds like a great idea! There is a pit in my backyard that looks like it may have been a burn bin, but there are cans in it... Maybe if I can get it cleaned out I can convert it to a compost. Plus, If I can cut back on the organic garbage we throw away, we can save on our garbage bill. We are charged per garbage bin that gets emptied. There is only so much I can safely put in the garbage disposal. A compost bin could possibly add some slight saving there and I wouldn't have to pay to improve my beds each year.

    Check the soil. It can vary from yard to yard. From http://homeguides.sfgate.com/tomato-...nts-74935.html "cucumber plants prefer loose, well-drained soil rich with nutritious organic matter, such as compost or manure. However, this plant's ideal pH range is slightly wider: cucumbers flourish in soils with a slightly acidic pH range between 6.0 and 7.0. As is the case with tomatoes, an application of mulch -- including buckwheat hulls, cocoa shells or black plastic mulch -- keeps your cucumber's soil free of weeds." You said you have a lot of clay, so it may be hindering their growth.

    ^^^tilling in some peat moss will improve soil 'looseness', as well as reducing pH at the same time. So will adding some ( month oid ) coffee grounds !!! And for dense soil, there simply is no substitute for a roto-tiller !

    Also, if you believe in 'companion' planting, setting up another trellis for pole beans right next to your trellis for cucumbers will cause both plants to do better.

    ^ Gypsum is also good for loosening soil, and a big bag of it is like $4. I had to get some because when I moved in, my yard was compacted clay, like what you find in a construction site or an industrial yard. I literally had to break up sections of it with a pickaxe. I still have issues with soil quality, ugh!

    Those cucumbers need something to climb on. Here we plant greens in the fall garden, along with the cabbage. Try red mustard, it grows like crazy. You can use 2x4 wire, make a big circle out of it and use it for compost.

    My base soil is clay so for YEARS I have put top-soil , peat moss, manure, compost and sand into my veggie garden so there is over a foot of loose , dark rich soil. ALL of my other veggies do great. Just haven't had luck with my cukes. I do have a frame ( trellis ) for the vines to grow on. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

    I use a compost accelerator and a little bit of water. I keep my compost can covered and out in full sun. You can throw in all sorts of stuff - vegetable scraps and peelings , leftover salad , coffee grounds ( but go easy because of the acidity ). By the time October rolls around it smells like manure and has about the same consistency. I dig out my veggie beds , spread it around , water it and then cover it over with the garden soil. Recycling at its best.

    Crap. I thought I got the small garden variety of sweet pea that stays at like 10".... it's becoming apparent that I got the normal vine kind that gets several feet tall and climbs. Oops.

    Any suggestions for perennial flowers? I know a google search would probably work just as well, but I would like to know some personal suggestions. There are a few I have a great abundance of, but I would like some different things.

    I have mostly DETA-345.jpg Hostas, some lillies, daffodils, 7392601w.jpg coral bells, and Sedum-Telephium.jpg Sedum telephium, and of course Roses.

    I split most of these up last year, so I'm wanting to find some new stuff to put in this year. I do prefer the kind that are low maintainence, in case I get lazy, though I do know I would need to keep an eye on them more in the first year while they are trying to establish themselves in the soil.

    I'm sorry but you have some work to do. I recommend that you add at least an inch of sand to help break up the clay plus top soil, manure and peat moss. Depending on what you want to plant you need 6 inches to a foot of fertile , loose soil. Best of luck !

    A few general tips from me:

    • soil is your friend, so treat it well (till, fertilize, water, remove grubs, etc);
    • weed when soil is just a bit damp and weeds are small, but not so small that it takes time to grab them, and remove the roots by grasping at the base of the weed;
    • buy or obtain quality seeds that are not too old, at most a couple of seasons, and keep them protected when not planted;
    • seeds germinate when soil temperature is warm enough and there is moisture to soften the outer shell;
    • plant crops that pay for themselves, that is veggies and fruits you like and that more expensive in stores (best example I'm thinking of is the cucumber)
    • watering is best done thru a soaker hose system, because you use less water and watering leaves can cause diseases like powdery mildew (especially bad on plants like zucchini and cucumber)

    I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

    Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

    I think I over committed a little today by offering a salad for 10 people from the garden. I have all the stuff but now I need to go pick it , wash it , chop it. It's easy for just me and J but an extra set of hands ( he's at work ) would be helpful right now.

    I don't have a garden, but I go to my mum's whenever I can and garden in hers. Last time I planted belgian endives as I really want them to grow. She's got banana, mango, lemon, lemongrass, hugeee aloe veras, literally every common herb, eggplants, sweet potato, a few tomato types, bok choy, onions, zucchini, kale… i think that's it but it's always changing.

    Do you guys do permaculture?
