I am so grateful my state had responsible sex ed. (They even had a doctor from the county health department come talk about STIs, instead of some religious/moral nonsense that other states use.)
I might be ragged on for saying this, but I feel total pity for young people in "Bible Belt" states who aren't learning the life skills they need and are going to end up understanding life correctly in their mid-20s, after they have a few kids or get a few STIs.
Yeah, I'm from one of those bible belt states and they pretty much said that abstinence is the ONLY way to go, else you're pretty much doomed to babies or std's. They barely mentioned condoms because I guess as soon as kids become aware of them they immediately start fornicating?
It took a lot of time to reeducate myself from their propaganda, but a lot of my family had kids in high school or immediately afterwards.

^The woman from the article was from Michigan.
This is why I fully support comprehensive sex ed for EVERYONE (regardless of religious views) since kinder garden. That "abstinence only" class was bad, really bad!

It's not just bible thumpers, there are many parents out there that have forgotten what they were like at 14, 15, 16. They are just as quick to say my "little" Johnny or Suzie would never do that, or are still too young and it should be up to the parents when to talk about it.

...."and I bet your fucking now"- lol.
It does suck that some people aren't being educated openly but I guess we all have our blind-spots. Yes, some real sex education is the societaly responsible thing to do but their education reflects the community they are living in... I guess I'm becoming more live and let live these days- my rage and frustration is directed more at the treatment of women in certain countries and underprivileged nations being raped for resources and the "take now and pay later" mentality towards the environment.

I feel the same way about the treatment of women in certain countries and underprivileged nations being raped for resources, but I still have concerns about what's going on here. It's because of policies like this that America has the highest teen pregnancy rate out of all of the western countries.

^ I dig totallay! But it seems to me that human beings make the same mistakes over and over again- whats a little pregnancy in the grand scheme of things, I know, ongoing consequences and the burden to welfare and so on.......
I just have a kind of "It will all come out in the wash" kinda feeling, maybe I'm becoming jaded as I age.

The ignorance is strong in that sex ed teacher, Bible Belt strong! People just don't understand biology to the detriment of all of us.

Ugh that is god awful. I hate the "sheltered learning," mindset, which doesn't teach kids anything about the real world decisions and consequences they'll face. Abstinence-only education has proven to be less effective than comprehensive sex ed that teaches kids about contraceptives if they should decide to engage in sexual relations, which for a lot of people is just part of their nature. Funny that it's a school in East Lansing (MI), I lived there for a couple years when I was in elementary school. I wonder what school it is lol.
"Rather have my feet hurting than my pockets."

This person (the tweeter) is an academic who writes a lot about sex. I doubt she would have been thrilled with any class that didn't teach the topic from a much more liberal and adult point of view. Honestly, I agree with the subtext of her tweets but to me she looks foolish and forgot where she was.
In my opinion Sex Education taught to minors should be just the facts. Pregnancy, disease and testing.
The time wasters are the ones who are attempting to piggy back on the convenience of the conversation to socially condition kids to think about sex in their preferred way.
To have sex or not is a very personal choice and once the kids are 18 their sex life is nobody's damn business. The only useful thing that they are going to get out of Sex Ed is some basic facts on how to stay safe.

The extent of my catholic base sex ed is save your precious flower for marriage, so you can have babies. Every sperm is sacred!
My aunt gave me the best sex ed talk. She was 100% honest with me. Told me that it's pleasurable and educated me on proper birth control use and always use double. Also told me the all options of unwanted pregnancy. We had the STD talk, and took me to get vaccinated for HPV strains. Also told me to have sex when I feel ready and , taught me the importance of consent.
This basically sums up modern sex ed talks in schools:

East Lansing High School. Here's more on the reaction to the mother's tweets:

What's ironic is that the organization teaching this 'abstinence only' curriculum is an anti-abortion group, yet what they teach makes it more likely that the teenagers in class will end up getting an abortion, not less likely.

I'm not 100% opposed to have the parents be the ones providing the bulk of the sex education, but as we all know SOME parents won't do that. A good way to see how much parents contribute would be, is to give diagnostic tests in schools regarding sexual education at the beginning and at the end of the school year (to both the ones who opt out due to parental reasons and the ones who opt to take school given sex education). If later in life, the kids who scored poorly in those diagnostic exams (and opted out due to parental "concerns") are shun from their families (due to pregnancies, STDs, getting an abortion, or homosexuality) the parents must be legally held responsible (in some manner, whether is adopting their grandchild, forking money for the treatment of a disease like Hep C or AIDS, etc.) for not providing the education to their kids when the time was adequate.
You may get all lolbertarian (yes, lolbertarian) about this (and about the government being "intrusive", but when it comes to the lives of others you don't mess around simply because of religion or because "I was NOT like that when I was that age". Is all part of the non aggression axiom.
Also, the opposite is true; some schools are like the ones mentioned above, and the ones who DO provide a better sexual education are the parents.
Dude, is always like that! The anti-choice a-holes are ALWAYS the ones who also happen to oppose contraception as well.

I am all in favor of FACT based Sex Ed and easily available birth control.
Just as " war is too serious to be left to generals " parents can't be relied on for FACT based Sex Ed. Too many are ignorant themselves. Yet another reason why I don't want
Christers and other religious fanatics making public policy.
