Default Costume dramas and Period films... do you like them and which do you recommend?

I adore a great period film and if you have one that you recommend please share... I do prefer high production values but not at the expense of screenplay, directing, or acting

I love the Austen films (for the most part- bet you can guess which one I don't like) both the BBC version and the Ang Lee/Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility is close to perfect in my eyes (this in spite of Hugh Grant).

I enjoyed Molliere recently which has got me back on a historical bent again. I would say I've seen most of them but would love to be surprised!

I recently saw The Devils Whore, a mini-series from Channel 4 in the UK. It should be on Netflix or Amazon somewhere, I believe it had the title The Devils Mistress in some places though. Good stuff!

There is also a follow-up called New Worlds which I haven't seen yet.

Another series I haven't seen but that is well rated is Bleak House from the BBC.

Have you seen Belle? I loved that movie so much <3

If you're down for a Chinese period film, Raise The Red Lanterns is spectacular! There's a gorgeous Japanese movie about Oirans called Sakuran--the costumes in that movie are stunning!

Not movies per se but "Vikings" on The History Channel is awesome. Well scripted , well acted and some historical accuracy. Truly fascinating.
Also "Wolf Hall " on PBS.

^Yes, Vikings is one of the better shows recently.

I intend to watch Wolf Hall, I couldn't seem to get into the book but hopefully will be easier to follow on screen.

I enjoyed The Tudors, although the later series weren't as good.

    JessaJ,Seen Devils Whore (liked it)
Couldn't get into New Worlds- it just felt slow and unrealistic. I felt the same way about the Tudors too: started well but ran out of steam as Henry aged- did you read the Phillipa Gregory books?

MyButter, Belle was awesome!- I will look into your suggestions, I do like 'non-euro' period films too.

ES, I looove the Vikings series. Will look into WolfHall.

Its so funny, the same issues which have plagued mankind (at heart) just keep recycling. We aren't really changed as a species IMO, we just have microwaves and great bathroom facilities

+ 1 for BOTH "Upstairs Downstairs " series. The "old" one from the 70's and the recent one just shown about a year or so ago.

Also "Downton Abbey ". "Turn" and "Hell On Wheels ( final season coming up ) on AMC are also very good.

"The Tudors " on Showtime - written by Michael Hirsh who also writes "Vikings".

The old "Poldark " on PBS. A new series is coming up on PBS.

"Texas Rising " on the History Channel looks promising.

There is a lot of quality "costume drama " period type stuff out there.

^^^ my personal favorite made your list ! 'The Illusionist'

Set in 1890 Vienna, this film has an absolutely unique ( and complex ) story line. The production is impeccable as well, with powerful performances by Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, and Jessica Biel.

Brideshead Revisited, England in the 1920s. Very good book, the TV series adaption is excellent. I haven't seen the movie that was recently made so I don't how good that is.
