I saw an article on an 'apt' in NY, it was 100 sq ft. The 'kitchen' was a tiny sink, microwave/mini fridge. I'd guess they share a bathroom down the hall, they didn't show or discuss that. The person that lived there said she liked it cause of the low cost. She said whenever she gets something new, she throws out/gives away something.

I saw a crawl space that was being rented out as a room in CA...yes for reals.

If I lived in a hot climate I would just live in a trailer or tent. F overpriced rent.

    loooooollllllllllll

This is all so true. I've looked at a TON of super-sketchy "living spaces" in the past. One was a converted garage that had astro turf as flooring and an old, dirty towel as the "door" separating the residence from the rest of the house. And there was this gorgeous 1920s beach apartment, but the landlord told me, "Sometimes we get homeless people sleeping in the laundry room. You can usually smell them. It's not a big deal though, just call the cops and they'll come get them." For $1700/month, I don't want a fucking hobo as a roommate! Damn!

    I was like:

Sometimes I get down because we don't have a dishwasher and have to do this elaborate parking dance ( only 1 space ). Looking at these makes it not seem SO bad.

ya take it from me, I've been living in & out of motels in a beach town in the Bay area & I can honestly say that after returning back here from my recent roadtrip, I'm thinking of just leaving for good. I'm having the worst luck on finding a housesitting or low rent room for myself. I've thought about staying & just living out of my car but eh I don't really have it in me right now. I wish beautiful places weren't so expensive to live :/ I'm always seeing on CL all of these detached & loft spaces for rent & the asking price is usually around 700 with a shared bathroom bleh I don't wanna share anything!

This is the arguable end result of a lot of factors coming together i.e. a 'perfect storm'

    - more people than ever NEED to rent an apartment because their low income, bad credit, previous foreclosure, etc. makes it impossible for them to obtain the financing to buy their own home or condo.

    - the 'magnet' effect of certain highly popular cities, i.e. L.A., San Fran, Seattle, New York, Honolulu as well as many others, has attracted high paying businesses andor people with money. This has driven up local real estate prices.

    - rising costs to counties / cities for their share of social welfare benefit costs and gov't worker benefit costs has resulted in increased property taxes.

    - market prices for rent are based on a combination of ( imputed ) property tax rates plus ( imputed ) local real estate valuation levels, with a bit of local 'supply and demand' premium piled on top.

    - at the moment, there is still a ton of single family homes in some state of foreclosure, and another ton of single family homes available at somewhat reasonable purchase prices. However, in popular cities, the combined cost of mortgage payments, plus property taxes, plus maintenance, makes the rent prices necessary to provide an investor landlord with an acceptable rate of return VERY expensive for the vast majority of 'middle class' Americans.

    - the influx of evicted former homeowners, new immigrants, former 'middle class' Americans who no longer have ( nor can find ) high paying secure jobs, etc. has increased the demand for apartment rentals at a far faster rate than investors / developers can build / convert new apartment rental units. This creates a short 'supply' of rental apartments.

    - collectively, this has created an extremely high 'demand' for any affordable place to sleep ... with the very short 'supply' of affordable apartment rental units prompting landlords to do the outrageous stuff posted earlier in this thread.

Yes.^ I saw a recent article saying certain area were cheaper to rent than to buy, (bypassing of course, all the necessary requirements to buy). Chicago supposedly being one place that it's cheaper to buy than rent, LA, etc.

If only it were that easy, everyone wants their cut. Even those land vacation rentals, where you park your camper, (not mobilehome parks) are high. In IL, (downstate only) it's seasonal. You can't live there in the winter. Idk about other areas/state.

^ If I owned an RV, I wouldn't have any problems except maybe high gas prices or maintenence (depending if I'm on the road or not) Out here in Ca, you can pretty much live out of your RV anytime of the year. I see them everywhere up here, everyday & I sooo wanna trade or sell my car for either that or a van to which I can convert.

Around here also, they are very strict about parking, cause some people park their cars in lots & sleep in them.

http://youtu.be/ncXXLjf235g I found that link long time ago. I was wondering if this is even legal to turn the bus into a home. Gov always have to stick sticks in wheels.

    Living in a tiny house
    http://youtu.be/j88Ao2DYSZo

I remember i watched a movie. And it had tiniest houses for people who works seasonal jobs, it had kitchen, toilet, and bedroom. I will look up for that movie. That house was like a one piese, already with a roof. Also i saw similar houses when i was walking near port and those lil houses were transported for people who works on north.

^^^ technically, a converted bus is considered to be an RV.

Those tiny houses are certainly cute enough. But they really aren't all that much of a bargain if you look at the total cost picture of buying property, plus sewer / septic, plus well, plus electric service etc. to set one up independently. Also many cities won't allow them under zoning laws because they aren't considered to be a 'permanent' structure.

Technically, tiny houses are considered to be mobile homes, thus many cities zoning laws would force them into mobile home parks. That's a pretty cheap setup ... and doesn't require any additional investment in property, sewer / septic, or water, or electric service. But the 'neighbors' may be an issue ...

In russian folklore we have " house on chicken legs" inside usually lives a witch...lol but in cartoons those houses walks and even fly))and if guests not behaving well, it can kick his ass!

Would be a good idea, house moves and even fly)
I notice those houses arent cheap, little but cost like a wing from an airplane.

Yeah I own my land but I'm in a deed resricted area. I could imagine if I tried to put one of those on my property. I did look into thrm because my friend( a member here) is obsessed woth them. In the end the nice ones cost sbout as much as my house cost to built sans land. Oh this thread gave me a good idea. I'll convert my laundry room into a room and rent it out for the low price of 500 a month. jk. I'm probably just going to maybe sell it once my dsughter leaves if she ever does because I don't need a 2000 sq ft house to myself and really don't want or need a romate.

There's a bad ass hostel in Pacifica - at a lighthouse. Stayed there multiple times. It's about $27-$30 a night.

Oh never mind. May be fun a few nights for you but not ongoing ( shared spaces obviously ).

Michelle : the loophole where I'm thinking of getting my land ( Big Island Hawaii ) is that that tiny home needs to be built to be " mobile " aka truck bed with wheels. Un-permitted builds happen often there too but that's the legal way.

Shout out to manufactured homes. They aren't all bad. They don't age well but a well maintained one can look good for about a decade.

I know the market is much worse in SF, but the crazy thing about NYC is that you can get a true one bedroom with a kitchen, multiple closets, and other amenities for under $1500. You just have to sit on a train for, GASP, an extra 15 minutes to get to midtown Manhattan and forgo hip restaurants/bars. I respect that people have different priorities, but I can't believe all my friends who pay crazy rent for their Williamsburg squalor closets. And then they ask why I live in Harlem and if I want to move to their neighborhood, LOL.

^^^ regarding NYC ridiculous rents, when I was living and working in that area I did something similar by renting across the river in north NJ. An extra 15 minutes of transit time can indeed save hundreds of dollars per month in rent cost.

Again, local rent prices are a function of local property tax rates, local real estate market prices, and some 'supply and demand' premium. Where Manhattan or Williamsburg are concerned, the tax rates and local real estate prices are outrageous, plus the 'magnet' effect has drawn a huge number of people with money.

Yup! Southern California isn't quite as bad as SF and NYC but it's the same principle. I pay ~$1000 for a two-bedroom "house" (well it's really a duplex, whatever) with my own private full size yard and storage shed, giant windows, patio, my next door neighbors' homes are a solid 20 feet away instead of within an arm's reach from mine, etc. It's because, like you, I'm in a less popular, out-of-the-way neighborhood.

A similar apartment in a cool neighborhood is usually around $1800-2200 here, and forget having a garden or windows bigger than a vanity mirror. I do not want to live in a windowless box in a parking lot! A duplex or standalone house is up into the $3000s. I don't get it because everyone has to drive everywhere here anyway. What's the point of paying the extra $800 or living with 10 housemates when everything is always a 20 minute drive away no matter where you live?
