Default Hello girls! looking for other dancers/business owners

I'm making my first business move this summer and I'm looking to get a few tips from other dancers/business owners. Did any of you decide to keep working while running a successful business? Did you let other dancers in on your little secret, or did you just fake it as if you were an employee? I keep thinking of what can go wrong instead of what can go right. Is this normal? If you can, please tell me about your start up process and how you got over your fears.

Well, this whole forum is full of dancers who have shared lots of stories and information on getting started in the industry and dealing with fellow dancers. Might be useful to browse through a bit and then come back with some specific questions or even PMs to posters who posted something that resonates with you.

I'm a cam model that mostly does indy shows, so I keep 100% of my money. I phased out of dancing, but still do photo shoots and camming. Dancing paid for nursing school, I wish I'd kept my mouth shut about that in divier clubs, girls who did nothing but dance tried to hurt my money, eiother out of jealousy or spite. In nicer clubs, there were plenty of girls who were using the easy money, flexible schedules, and short work weeks to fund start ups and I can't wonder if that's why they succeeded versus non dancers who didn't.

A dancer I worked with years ago owned a car detailing place. She had opened it in her early 30's but maintained good relationships with her favorite clubs and regulars. She could come in and make a good chunk of quick cash when vanilla business was slow.

I've been wondering this as well. I was considering purchasing a dance studio.

I think it depends on the kind of business, if it needs $$ into it and how much you have saved for that/personal bills, and if you want to go it alone or have a partner.

In my case, this studio is established, a self-sufficient style of business (you make a large chunk of $$ off instructor floor fees/space rental) and the only work to be done is to get new clients/retain them... which is gonna be the thing I'm worried about, the owner alienated a lot of them bc he got burned out and made it all about the money, and people knew it. No physical $$$ into it though except probably some minimal advertising/new paint job; the owner was willing to take a % of profit as payments. I have several months of bills saved and can obviously still dance when needed, so I'm not worried about paying personal bills.

There are 2 of us, so if I were to take on the office duties at 8 hours/week, that's plenty of time to dance a couple shifts and continue my post-bac. Fiance would be teaching lessons there and continuing his school twice a week. However, there is no way I could do both admin duties plus teach 10 lessons a week, plus dance.... the hours clash, and I'd be too physically exhausted, even though that's only like 20 hours of work.

I think dancing/camming is probably the best side gig you can have while starting a business though, due to to the flexibility. If business is good, you don't dance. If business slows down and you need $$ to advertise, dance a couple shifts. I would actually be afraid to start a business if I didn't have such a lucrative/flexible side option.
I would NOT tell other dancers/customers. They could be assholes in the club out of jealousy, or they might show up at your business, which could be troublesome... like an extension of being followed home, eek.

I've often wondered this myself, when I worked in a big city, I wasn't worried about customers interfering with my business, it was also more of a side business at that time. Now as I'm gearing up to make the switch to primarily self employment in a significantly smaller city where everyone seems to know everyone or someone who does, the idea of continuing to dance makes me nervous. I've always been upfront about my personal projects, but it's also always been in the back of my head that if one of them ever really takes off I'm going to have to start keeping my mouth shut in the club. Like not completely, just being more vague on the details. I have a little box of cards I have from people I met at the club...graphic designers, financial planners, investors, etc. Mentioning you're self employed can bring some connections, and you can never have too many of those. Obviously if you ever email them and need their services there is no mention of the strip club lol, you "met them at a networking event sometime last year". It's not like they'll remember.

I think I can answer some of your questions. For me, I've been off and on in this industry for about 11 years now. I quit dancing altogether when I was in college. After college I decided to become an entrepreneur and come back into the industry while opening my business. I've saved More money as well and this year I've started the process of hiring my web designer and all. Once that Up and running, I'll transition into focusing a lot on my company and making money on it. I'm trying to make this my last year in the industry because that's my purpose for all of this. Yes as a business owner you'll be extremely nervous, it's normal because you're taking a risk to hopefully reap a very large reward. You need to have a great business plan put together and follow your business model closely to hopefully accomplish your goal in a timely and minimal costly way as possible.
Me personally, I've never faked anything. Everyone in my circle including the dancers I know and have known, knew that my sole goal was to finish college and when I got back into the industry, they then knew my new goal which was to open a successful business and retire from this industry. The people who know me, knows how I feel about what I do. This industry is not meant to be a part of for your entire life. Your looks will fade, your body will tire eventually with age, so you have to plan wisely and accordingly how and where you'd like your life to go. Use the opportunities of dancing as a platform to accomplish those things. Best of luck to you and your business. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I had a car dealership for a while. I had a partner and we went to auctions together( which was a nightmare) all men and they harass you all day. Not to mention. I'd be in heat in excess of 95 degrees and 100% humidity. I was a third generation car dealer owner. My dad always wanted me to get into it ( sadly I didn't until after he died) and always wished I could call him when things would arise. I didn't work in the 3 years , except a couple of times ( and I had a few customers looking for specific model vehicles and got them at the auction for them). I was also building a house too. It got too much for me. it's a sexist industry. especially if you do the buying. I may get back into it again but i'd hire a buyer. The profit margin can be huge. Much better than commision at a dealership. My goal was never make less than 1000 per car. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies and info! I get more negative feedback than positive from the ppl that I talk too. I feel like I'm ready mentally and financially, so Im going to do it just to fulfill my dreams. I started dancing for this specific reason and I can't let negativity keep me from achieving my goal. This is a happy time for me and I can't believe its actually about to happen... Dancing has really changed my life and believe it or not, I'm proud to tell folks what I do because it's not what you do, it's how you do it! Thanks and congrats all of you!

I have an online business I manage and would not tell the broads at the club because the less personal details they know about me the better, when at the club I am in hustle mode and don't want any 'so how's business' type questions, and I don't want to have to deal with any negative haters from the ones who haven't figured out how to get s second income going and forced to work the club everyday.

This thread is so inspiring. I have been dancing very sporadically for the past 4 years, and have just recently hit my stride. My dancing income has been steady enough to quit my time-wasting vanilla job. I am approaching 26 this month.... and I'm looking to make the most of my last 5 or so years in the industry. Income made dancing from here on out will be used for investments and business opportunities. Seeing so many ladies doing what I aim to do in the next several years is super awesome.

In short response to OP: I'd keep your business dealings secret. Most strip club bitches ain't anything like the girls you will encounter here on SW. Y'all may do tequila shots together at work.... she may put you on to that customer that likes you every now and then, but more often than not, those girls don't want to see you WIN. IMHO, the less information people know about you, the better.

    Good luck, hun!!!

It's only best to share some of your goals with the people you trust and consider as a friend. The people who are wanting the same from life as you and people who will take you higher. Women in general can become jealous and envious of one another but sharing life stories are only to be told to the woman whom you feel will stand in the crowd and root you on to the home run. I've only met 2 women in the industry who I trust, one I've known for 11 years and the other I met on here years ago. I trust both of them.
And if you have dreams and goals, don't be afraid to try and accomplish them. Put a plan together and put it in action is what I always say.
