Default Help! My hair is fried!!!

OK, so for years I had really long hair. Recently got it cut to my shoulders because I wanted to try something new.

After I got it cut, I decided I wanted to go platinum blonde. My natural hair color is light brown and lifts really easy, but I also had residue old hair dye in my hair even though I had not dyed my hair for about 3 months prior to getting my hair cut.

The hair all on my scalp and on top lifted really easy and got really white after just one application of bleach, but the rest was really orange. I bleached it two days later again. My hair did not look or feel damaged really. Was still soft and healthy.

Originally I was going to wait at least a week to bleach it one last time, which I wish so bad I would have done. I just did not want to sit around with orange hair. 3 days after that I bleached it one last time, left the bleach on for only about 10 minutes over the time. BIG MISTAKE.

I completely changed my hair texture... When it is wet, it feels so gooey and sticky, like limp noodles. When it is dry, it literally looks like what a ball of cheap yarn looks like when the threads are unraveling on themselves. My hair is unraveling on itself! The damage goes up as far as 6 inches in some sections. I cannot brush it in fear of it snapping off. My hair is snapping off so easily now. I do not even want to look at it.

I know that I cannot mend the damage that has already been done, but I want to at least find a way to mask the damage so it is not all that noticeable. Just put some moisture back in it and at least make it *appear* healthier again.

I cannot get my hair cut again. I just got it cut off to my shoulders and I do not do boy cuts, so will have to let it grow out a few inches before I get some of the damage cut off.

I did one night of sleeping with deep conditioner in my hair. Did not do much of anything. The next night, I slept with coconut oil in my hair. Helped the tiniest, tiniest amount. Not going to wash my hair with anything or touch it for a few days, but then I am going to saturate it in coconut oil for another night.

Does anyone have any advice please? What are some products I can use to help this??

Coconut oil is good (sleep with it in, or leave it in for a few days as your hair is probably so thirsty atm that it wont appear greasy), the Shu Uemura ultimate remedy range helped nurse mine back to health, consider going to salon for a treatment, don't wash it or use heat on it too often. Honestly, time is the ONLY thing that heals the damage unfortunately-it has to grow out (mine was fried over a year ago, and I still have a band of stringy damage that I'm waiting to cut out), it's a long, slow process . If you can, try clip in extensions or a wig for work to disguise the damage.

This happened to a girl friend of mine. She likened the texture to wet, stretchy dog fur. Sadly, there is no fixing it. You could do a deposit-only demi dye, to put something back into it, which may help. But no amount of oils or conditioners can repair that much damage. I'd go have it assessed by a professional.

I'd go get it chopped off and wear a wig to work. Get an edgy cut that you can live with IRL and either cover it up with a wig ITC or simply rock the new look ITC.

Not sure there is much a professional can do about it either lol. It is damaged beyond repair. Thank you.

I was considering wearing a wig when I go out of the house until my hair stops looking so destroyed lol.

    This happened to me.

My hair felt like bubble gum when wet, and was a frizzy mess while dry.

I got a pixie and bought some nice wigs. It sucked growing it back out, but now my hair is the healthiest it's ever been. It's thick, shiny, and bouncy with minimal effort. It's not worth the stress. Just cut it off.

Agreed. I bleached my black hair to platinum blonde for ten years, it was beyond fried and I'd spend way more than I'm willing to admit on extensions. Wigs would be the cheapest, easiest fix. Also, over time, damage can travel up the hair shaft, sabotaging your efforts and ruining hair that wasn't even affected.

    Hi Iva,

I take my hair from a level 3 dark brown to a level 10 platinum blonde every 4 to 6 weeks for the last 5 or 6 years. I don't know how accessible Sally's is to you, but two products I use from there are honestly magic! stinks on application, like you would not believe, but you will see a significant different straight away. I usually try and use it a few days before I bleach my regrowth because it can make platinum hair tarnish and throw a little gold, but it still works amazingly at restoring condition afterwards too. I also always use the directly afterwards and in place of a standard conditioner - it leaves your hair in silky manageable condition. Obviously towel dry before applying your treatment. You'll see huge results after the above, but continue to apply a moisturising leave in and I like to apply an argon oil aswell.

If you are still a little concerned about the colour or the Aphogee leaves you a little brassy, use in "Light Pearly Beige Blonde" - this also leaves over processed blondes in great condition and this colour in particular helps neutralise brassy tones, but isn't too ashy. I usually alternate between light pearly beige and platinum once a week depending on whether my hair is throwing any brassiness or toner build up on my ends.

Try not to wash your hair too often and be really gentle brushing it wet - your hair will be much more brittle wet.

It has happened to me. I used to be platinum blonde. I tried everything, coconut oil,Moroccan oil, shea butter leave in treatments overnight etc.

If you are going to be that light, keep it short and get extensions.
The only thing that helped me was going dark for a bit. It actually seals the cuticle so it looks more flat and shiny. Also next time, don't use a bleach. A box dye might do it for you since you are already fairly light. That has helped me a lot too. I'm about your colour naturally.

When this happened to me, I went against everyone's advice to chop it all off. I tried short hair once instantly regretted it so I was determined to make the most of it.

Coconut oil and the Aphogee treatment someone mentioned helped the situation to some extent, but the only miracle product I've ever found was Shu Uemura's Ultimate Remedy deep conditioner (it comes in a green tub.) It's like $70 or $80, but I can't stress enough what it's done for my hair. After one use, my boyfriend actually reached out to touch it and said 'I never thought it would look or feel like hair again!' No one would say my hair looks healthy, but people have stopped asking me if I even use conditioner.

Also, get used to minimal heat styling. Experiment with velcro rollers and doobie wraps.

    Good luck!

I used to bleach my hair white and dye it wild colors back in the day (and may start doing it again) and it really fucked with my hair. One time I really, really messed it up and my friends said my hair looked like hay. I didn't have the money to get treatments or anything, so what I started doing was getting moisturizing and repairing shampoo and conditioner and washing it once a week, and doing a deep condition before I washed it. I used extra virgin olive oil and raw eggs with the yolk and dumped a ton of it on my head and let it sit for an hour before I washed, and kept my conditioner in for at least five minutes, as well. It took a couple of months but my hair ended up being shiny and healthy again.

For my deep fried crisis I used Joico kpak protein treatment once a week and Aveda shampoo damage remedy. I don't know why but natural stuff like coconut oil, eggs and mayo just didn't work (now that my hair is not bad but just coloured and then bleached with highlights mayonnaise is super amazing)

It's important to do some kind of protein treatment regularly to help strengthen the hair from the damage.

Also, during my extreme fried time I had to wash my hair as little as possible and because my hair was full of split ends up to the roots I used clip in extensions to cover it up.

Finally I used argon oil or maraccon oil (anything basically you could leave in and apply to wet and dry hair) all the time to keep it from getting brittle. I was able to put handfulls in my hair and it would just absorb and I'd not even just apply it at night. My hair was so dry I needed to use it throughout the day otherwise I'd see breakage all over the bathroom floor after brushing my hair.

Keep in mind that when your hair is severely damaged, any sort of product you put on it is just covering up the damage rather than restructuring the actual hair. Hair is composed of dead cells - there isn't any actual healing going on when we condition our hair and whatnot. Products can help temporarily fill in breaks and whatnot, but the hair stays damaged regardless. Also keep in mind that if you have structural issues, such as split ends, these can split up the hair shaft and affect hair that was previously undamaged. Hence the importance of trims for those of us with long hair (money-saving tip: if you have long hair, you can trim your own hair between visits to the stylist).

I'm not sure what keratin / protein treatments do to hair strands - I'm talking here about all of the other treatments (egg yolks, conditioners, oils, etc.).

Thank you so much everyone. I really appreciate it.

I keep on seeing that ApHogee 2-step mentioned everywhere when I do my research and describes my hair perfectly. Over-bleached. Mushy when wet, brittle when dry. Will definitely try it and hope for the best or at least for better lol.

Will try out some other tips that were mentioned too. xx

Im thinking of cutting off my hair too. It is BEYOND repair. I seriously tried coconut oilve etc. I even bought an expensive hair serum. Nope, nothing can help it. Im thinking of buzzing it and selling the video. My hair is like past half my back. Maybe buzz it and take a bunch of vitamins to help it grow

My hair was starting to get like that (it had been dyed very dark, and then bleached platinum for 4 years).

Solution: Colored it a violet/red shade, so it would blend when my roots grew out, and left it for 6 months. Only washed it twice a week, used the hair dryer sparingly, and only used hot tools once a week. I also started using argan oil shampoo/conditioner, as well as the 3-Minute Miracle conditioner Aussie makes (it's SO cheap but it works amazingly well, my hair is so soft!). I was able to put some platinum parts back in after that, and so far no signs of damage.

I would probably cut it all the way to a Velma Kelly style bob, wait another couple weeks and dye it a dark color, and do pretty much what I did as far as care for it... NO color for a long time though and no hot tools at all. There is always the wig option too.

Another vote for the Joico KPack! You can get it at Sally Beauty and it is not too expensive.
I would definitely get it cut though, as much as you can get taken off and be comfortable with it.
Also take hair vitamins to help encourage new growth.

I should mention that the Aphogee is like glue - when it runs on to the nape of your neck, it dries like glue and the nasty smell resembles glue too. But it works a treat because bleaching/colouring your hair breaks all of the protein bonds and this treatment (it's a professional one) works by filling the gaps of the broken protein bonds. Don't use it too often though - I only use it when I colour my hair. Your hair is still going to need a huge amount of moisture after this treatment because it will still feel a bit yuck. Aphogee is strengthening, not really the moisturizing/hydrating component which will also make your hair feel brittle.

I don't know where about you are located, but if you can get your hands (or maybe hair is more appropriate) on La Biosthetique's Spa Spray, Intensive Spa Mask and Hydrating Spa Fluid - you will have AMAZING results!!! I used to be a hair educator for high end hair brands and I swear these three products are second to none in terms of maintenance.

I've had this happen YEARS AND YEARS ago, it was so traumatic I blocked it out of my memory for the most part but this is what I did to fix it:

Cut it shorter in a cut that fits my hair and texture. For example, I wish I could have cut it into a pixie but it would have looked terrible so I did a cute short bob instead. Think Mia Wallace.

I washed my hair every other day or you could do it even fewer than that, but I have an OCD thing about washing my hair. I used really gentle shampoo, like Trader Joe's Nourish Spa shampoo (it's like $2.95 a bottle but amazing!) and Aussie deep conditioner or sometimes Neutrogena Triple moisture mask. I would use a twister turbie to dry my hair then a wide tooth comb to comb it out very gently. I used a blow dryer very sparingly and when I did, I used "It's a 10" miracle serum. Only used a boar bristle brush as well.

My hair grew so healthy and long *sigh* then just recently I had another disaster and I'm back to square one again....

Oh and I avoided any and all protein products, any coconut oil etc because my hair is protein sensitive and it would do more harm than good.

I second that, I didn't read the whole thread but I'll say this. Make sure it's unrefined cold pressed virgin (if not extra virgin) coconut oil. Coconut oil is good for so many things. You can use it on your cuticles, your hair, face mask/wash (it doesn't clog your pores but mileage will vary with skin type), as an exfoliant mixed with sugar (supposedly also good for your skin). It's also supposed to be good as a sun block and used for sun burns. You can also use it for oil pulling. And the list goes on. Any, I'll cut this short because I didn't read the whole thread and don't want to go and repeat everyone else. Just my 2 cents with my little experience with coconut oil (it does good with my skin).

Coconut oil was a total and complete bust for me.

As hair conditioner- had to use a lot of shampoo to get it out therefore defeats the purpose of conditioning your hair.
As make up remover- didn't remove anything really, just made a greasy mess.
As a facial moisturizer- I broke out so so soooo soooooo bad, total nightmare.
As a body moisturizer- Never really absorbed and my pets were constantly licking me.

I'd rather just eat it. And don't use it as a sunscreen folks! That sounds scary.

    That's too bad

I've never used it as a shampoo. Since I started a very inconsistent routine with coconut oil what I do is take a shower, when I'm done rubbing a thin layer over most of my body I pat my skin down so it's not greasy looking then I rub the leftovers from my hands over my hair.
It's unfortunate your skin isn't compatible with coconut oil. Coconut oil works great as a moisturizer for me.
I was dying when I read that pet licking sentence. I know some of the ladies on here would have the perfect gif for that.

I've used it as a sunscreen on a few occasions and it worked great for me. I naturally have a bronzish color skin and it gives it a nice glow when going out in the sun.

    To each their own
