Default Has Anyone Here Successfully Gone off Prozac?

I have suffered from major depression for the past 17 years. I was taking Wellbutrin for a long time, and everything was a bit better, but still not 100%. So, about a year ago, my doctor added on a Prozac prescription, and it's made all the difference in the world for my mood.

BUT. I got SO fat. I feel like every time I even look at food, I gain like 3 lbs. I know I'm not big at all by the standards of regular society, but I feel like this disgusting blubbery whale. This is majorly affecting my life. None of my clothes fit, and I don't even want to go out and be seen in public anymore, let alone go to work.....so I haven't been. Calorie counting, healthy eating, exercise - no matter what I do, I just keep gaining more weight. I suspect that Prozac is the cause, but every time I try to stop taking it, I spiral back down into this horrible depression. I would seriously try anything as an alternative at this point. If you've ever gone off Prozac and found some other thing (more exercise, diet change, natural herb, etc.) that worked just as well, what was it? And for anyone who was ever on Prozac for the amount of time that I have been or longer, and experienced weight gain - did you find that you were able to lose the extra weight normally after you got off the drug? I'm really worried that I've permanently wrecked my metabolism or something.

I did but you must taper of off with help of a psychiatrist only once you feel stable in life for a consecutive number of months. Please do your research and talk it over with your doctor don't just up and quit taking it.

I never gained weight but negative side effects were significant decrease in sex drive and I feel like my emotions were on mute like I was not sad but I did not feel happy either. I felt like I hit a plateau with Prozac and I liked Wellbutrin better.

If you can feel depression coming on when not taking Prozac then maybe ask about another medicine that doesn't affect your weight. Or suck it up and hit the gym/ exercise and improve your diet. Studies show there is a link between diet exercise and mood soooo it could only help.

Yes 7 years. I quit cold turkey. It took a couple of years to feel normal and exercise, massage make it worse. antidepressants build up in your tissues tsken forlong periods. I started a thread about depression in body business you may want to read it. Good luck.

I had pretty severe withdrawals from tapering off over a couple of weeks. I cursed my doctor for not doing it more slowly. Quitting cold turkey must have been rough!

I took prozac years ago. I dont remember any weight gain but I am on zoloft. At first, I lost like 10 pounds in a week because of severe diarrhea. Like SEVERE diarrhea. Now though, its just like you. Ive gained about 20 pounds in a month. Im being honest though, its because my diet is shitty. I binge eat a lot on sweets, something I never did while not on zoloft. You should mention it to your doctor but from what I know weight gain is really common with these meds. I dont think it can be permanent but I have heard that ppl have the effects of prozac and zoloft long after theyve taken them.

    Definitely taper off!
I was only on it for maybe 3 weeks tops, and when I quit cold turkey I still felt like shit and had the 'brain zap' thing happening.

I wasn't on it long enough to gain any real weight, but I do remember being constantly hungry, even waking up at 2 am to eat, and all that stopped after I quit. If that's how you gained your weight, I'm sure you'll eventually naturally drop it off when your appetite levels out.

^ My doctor told me antidepressants make you crave starchy things but even when I was off them for 8 years I still binged on junk. But that's just me.

I feel for you dreamsindigital. I have been depressed for a long time, and know I dont want to take antidepressants because of the side effects and personality changes. Anything you take everyday your body will get used too and have withdrawals like caffeine crashes etc. It probably will be in your system for awhile. Just taper off. Maybe try some herbs to flush it out more.
