    Default The Supergirl trailer

I was wondering what you all thought about this. Sure, it's a comic book property, but they don't have many women characters in comics. Me, i'm not too sure about a few things, but when she's Supergirl in the trailer I kind of buy it, honestly i buy her out of costume. Call me a romantic, i get into this stuff and i can't help it.. What do the ladies think.

^^^ one of the problems involved with the 'recycling' of long-standing comic book characters is working with the pre-existing 'mythos'. Being faithful to that 'mythos' limits the amount of new material that can be generated. Departing from that 'mythos' runs the risk of alienating pre-existing fans. It would appear that CBS has chosen the latter.

Just my take, but Supergirl looks pretty good, but I think Powergirl is more contemporary.

I think it's not so much recycling, but more rebooting. The origin story remains the basically the same. Alter-egos remain the basically the same. True, there are some that want to see the past stories and battles told again and that they consider it a violation of canon creators deviate from them. But I think from that point on the sky's the limit as to what a character does. For example the 3rd Batman movie. Same origin and alter-ego, but Bane and Talia Al Ghoul are recent characters. I think they were introduced in the 1980's and both are now considered part of the Batman mythos built on the old foundation.

Supergirl's origin is a bit more convoluted than others; she's been different characters entirely over the years. From Wikipedia:

After the post-Crisis reboot in the late 1980s, Supergirl's origin was completely rewritten. No longer was she Superman's cousin or even Kryptonian. In Superman v2, #16, a new Supergirl debuted as a man-made lifeform made of synthetic protoplasm created by a heroic Lex Luthor of a "pocket continuum". Lex implants her with Lana Lang's memories, and she can shapeshift to resemble Lana.
And it goes on from there... But this series is about Kara Zor-El from Krypton, and looks promising. It's from the same executive producer as "Arrow" and "The Flash," who knows how to bring comic books characters to the screen. I'm glad that, unlike "Smallville", she's Supergirl from the start- no waiting ten seasons just to get a glimpse of the costume. Too bad this is on CBS, eliminating the possibility of crossovers with the other DC shows, like the upcoming "Legends of Tomorrow." It looks to have a bigger budget, though, which it's going to need to make the flying and other powers look convincing.

I'm crushing on the actress; she's perfectly cast. LOVE the look on her face when facing the bank robbers and realizing that she is, in fact, bulletproof.

the S#!T has already started ... from

(snip)some officially details are beginning to surface; and if they confirm other rumored information, then DC, WB and CBS are planning some significant changes to the character’s traditional origin story.(snip)

(snip)both are citing the same DC-scribed plot synopsis, then it stands to reason that the TV series – still without a name – will also feature a version of Kara Zor-El at age 24, experienced in concealing her Kryptonian superpowers. That might seem like a predictable synopsis for casual fans who witnessed a similar premise put to work in Man of Steel, but comic fans know that it’s a large departure from the character’s comic roots.

The continuity changes and reboots Supergirl has undergone since her introduction in 1959 have led to a variety of versions, but most in the modern age have stuck to a short list of details. Kara Zor-El was a teenager when her cousin, Kal, was sent to Earth by his Kryptonian parents. Kara managed to escape as well, but for one reason or another, arrived on Earth years behind, finding Kal a full-grown man (and superhero).

It then falls to Kal to help his cousin control her newfound powers until she can adopt a ‘Super’ mantle of her own -and a secret identity along with it (a story played out on Smallville already). But going by the apparent synopsis, that isn’t part of the new show’s identity at all.(snip)

(snip)That would seem an even more logical solution if the plan was to effectively remove Superman from the story altogether (which seems likely for a number of reasons). All things considered, a decision to skip over Supergirl’s actual origin story of arriving on Earth, instead focusing on how she became a hero could be a risky move. But it would set the show apart from much of the coming competition – and that could prove a strength.(snip)

On top of that, Warner Bros will be releasing a feature film version of 'Supergirl' later this year which is supposedly much more closely linked to the established 'mythos' ...
