Default Is this a typical audition? Feeling concerned...

So I finally went to my first audition. I was greeted (somewhat) by a very drunk/crude DJ, who sat me down and gave me a once over before criticizing my outfit (civilian clothes) and asked me why I wanted to dance, why I think I'd be a good dancer, if I have a boyfriend, if I'm okay taking off my clothes, etc. He then handed me some rules and regulations to look over, covering house fees and all the rest. I signed some paperwork and was told to change in the bathroom as I was not allowed to use the dressing room. He only had me dance on stage for one song (which I did pretty badly, but I figured the flirting with customers/hustling would be my strength until I learn pole tricks)

He told me I did terribly and then asked me what shifts I wanted.

Is this typical? The DJ at this club works open to close and is also the bouncer, evidently. He is in charge of all the dancers. I realize it wasn't the nicest establishment, but he was so crude and unprofessional toward me... Is this a typical experience? Should I try again elsewhere or just expect no respect?

    Thanks!

While there's no shortage of skeevy weirdos staffing strip clubs, you should never expect to be disrespected. I would only work in a club like that if it had the highest earning potential around town. If you're just starting out, though, you have more to gain by auditioning again in a better club.

Yeah that guy was an asshole! Fuck him. I would have been like "uh nevermind" and ran right out of there! And no, that wasnt a typical audition. I've worked at some nasty clubs with nasty managers, but even they had the decency to be nice to the new girl who was auditioning. Its kind of in their best interest to do so, if all managers acted like an asshole and criticized every potential dancer auditioning, no one would want to work there. Typically, the manager and DJ try to make a good first impression and tell the girl how pretty she is and how she can make a lot of money working there. Even if its not true, they want to do what they can to get her hopes up so that she'll be eager to work and feel comfortable doing her job. That way, they can hopefully make money off of her. By being an unprofessional asshole, that guy lost potential money for the club. Remember this; if someone is an asshole to you the first time you meet them, it will only get worse. Save yourself the stress and dont ever go back there. You wont make money if you are unhappy, so find a better club.

If you do decide to go back to this club, definitely find out which days that DJ works. Most clubs employ a couple DJs! Just try to work nights you know he's not...

Also, the DJ is in charge of hiring? Seems really odd o.O

If this club is worth it then I'd personally would talk to someone else like an actual manager. I doubt the DJ's are supposed to be getting drunk during their shift and alienating potential new hires. If it's not worth it then head to greener grass / better club.

To me, it sounds like he was trying to shoot your confidence down to try to manipulate you somehow (probably in the future). It sounds like he was 'negging' you - something so-called 'pickup artists' do to get women into bed.

Your experience was extremely abnormal, and I am SO sorry that this was your first experience of the industry. It's all up from here!

Hey, on the plus side, you were hired on first try ( he's a creep obviously trying tactics like Charlie mentioned ). If you did that poorly, you wouldn't have been hired. If you work there, ignore him as much as you can.

Really ... Auditions can run the spectrum of super professional to downright bizarre. Be prepared for anywhere along the spectrum but move on if treated poorly for sure!

WOW! I didn't realize I had gotten so many responses until just now. I really appreciate all the support, ladies! It has given me the oomph to go and give it another go at a better club

In addition, he was the hiring manager and worked Monday-Saturday, open to close. I know trusting my gut and never going back was the right choice, but all the responses have been helpful in knowing that a better experience is out there... I appreciate it.

Very helpful! I especially agree with the not making money while unhappy... it was definitely not a good place to feel the money making vibes

Wow... Just wow.. What a dick! Where the fuck does he get off making fun of your civilian clothes...?!? And who the fuck does he really think he is! A fucking DJ...! I'd like to see his decks. I'm sure I'd have a lot to make fun of. Lemme guess - laptop jocky in a ST - putting girls down so he stands a better chance of fucking them. Real classy. Does he walk around wearing his headphones too....?? What a douche. I bet he's fucking proud of himself too! Ooooo...! Reading your story kinda burned me up *lol* Nobody should deal with that. Good for you for not going back!

He's on power trip, pure and simple. And working with managers like this is not the way to make money! I second going to another club. That's not typical at all. Also, while some smaller clubs can be awesome...being the DJ, bouncer, AND manager?! Wtf?! Honestly that would be a red flag to me...any club bringing a decent amount of money through its doors can afford to hire employees for those positions...

^^ Exactly! ^^ My question is why didn't he let you use the dressing room...???? Is THAT common...?? I mean - I've only worked one club (as of now anyway - the club I'm looking at this moment doesn't seem nearly as professional as the one I started at..) But what the fuck - they let ME use the dressing room at my last one! How the hell else are you expected to change - look at your getup *and touch up your makeup* while making any adjustments - strap on those shoes/boots and practice your walk to help you get your head in it...?!? In a bathroom stall...?? That's messed up. I hope this toolbox runs across you at another club so he can see you making bank and feel like a dumb dickhead for missing out! Just curious... Did he introduce himself as the DJ first - and then casually mention that he's also the manager and bouncer...? And as Charlie61 mentioned - the negging... I can't believe anyone would use this this technique in hiring dancers.... He obviously watched that pickup artist show... Someone should tell him it's bad for business *eye roll*

I would've freaked out if this had been my first audition experience. I don't know if I would've ever returned to audition in another club! Jesus. OP, I am SO sorry this happened to you!!

Every time I re-open this thread, I experience renewed horror at imagining being a total newb and showing up to a club (already nervous as hell) to have this happen. Nooooo!! Not typical!!!

Even when I've auditioned in dives and mid-tiers, I've only had positive experiences with hiring managers. They know that this is a business and that you aren't dressing up for a date with them, personally. They'll generally give you a professional once-over look, say "you look great - you'll be up in a few minutes," and move on to discussing what shifts you want after you dance on stage. I've never even had a sleazy "Wow, you look super sexy!!" or anything like that. Of course, once you've worked a few shifts, they might let stuff like that slip (in a complimentary way with no harm intended), but generally they're careful with newbies.

I've also never heard of a hiring manager actually INSULTING an auditioning girl. It's one thing to say something sleazy ("Daaamn, girl!!"), it's another thing to say something derogatory or mean-spirited. You might at some point hear a let-you-down-easy comment ("We're not hiring right now,"), but it's a whole different level to actually insult a dancer.

That said, I always research clubs before I audition, so doing a bit of legwork beforehand should help you avoid the nasties for the most part...

The majority of my auditions have been smooth and civilized. If I had to deal with that shit from the get-go, I'd just leave.

Yesterday the ex-manager-turned-DJ approached me: "Since I'm drinking, I'm going to be honest with you. You're one of the hottest dancers here, but you need to wear longer hair. What happened to the first wig you wore? Now you look like little Orphan Annie got trapped in a tanning bed." Which might make me laugh if it weren't for the fact I 1. have naturally curly hair 2. am naturally tan 3. the club is consistently empty as fuck. I really wanted to leave after that. Either way, doesn't matter -- you made the right call, and keep following your gut. If you have to talk yourself into going to work in the first place, and then have to worry about steeling yourself for an attack from management, you won't make shit. That moment was just what I needed to realize I was wasting my time there. Shoot for the top.

I think you should try another club, this sounds like a situation that would be acceptable at a small dingy club.
The bigger clubs will not have staff members speak this offensively to you.
Sometimes while dancing you will have customers say not very nice things about your appearance, but it is not common that club staff members will treat you like this. The bigger clubs generally have better standards and policies. Do yourself a favour and go to a bigger club, best to start off somewhere upmarket.
Don't worry if your stage performance is not perfected yet, that comes in time!

Wait, the DJ got to be in charge of if you got the job or not? I've been to a few clubs and never even spoke to the DJ until after being fully hired, dressed, and ready to work the floor/go on stage. I guess things are different down here?

Anyways he was rude to you? that does not sounds like a good first impression. I hope you find a better club.

You do NOT want that guy to be your bouncer. He will disrespect you and you will not feel safe dancing, which is going to cut into your earnings. DEFINITELY find a different club. My first choice club turned out to be really crappy and extras-ridden, and after I did some additional snooping, I found a great club with the nicest managers in the world and a better daily profit. Remember that you can do better than that!
