Uh, not quite, no. Technically, sex work itself is legal, however the latest laws have made almost every activity related to sex work (such as advertising) illegal, so in practice, sex work is treated as a criminal activity. A
s an American, you also can't legally work in Canada anyway, so I certainly wouldn't recommend trying to pay taxes to Canada on your earnings -- even if you were to get a visa, you're not allowed to work in the sex industry anyway.
Now, that's not to say that you can't get away with working up here. It would likely be very easy to do as long as you were discreet about being American and did your research and due diligence to make sure you're not going somewhere hot.
I just don't want you to think that Canada is a safe haven for sex work because of the new laws. Quite frankly, they're similar enough to the old laws but a bit worse. However, we're still a gray area sort of time where different jurisdictions are still figuring out if and how they will be enforcing the new laws, so in all likelihood, if you're careful, you will be fine.
