    Default Hair extensions smell bad?

My hair extensions smell strange, every single pack of extensions I've had always has the same weird smell! I buy 100% virgin remy hair, I love the look and texture, but they smell bad, even when I buy extensions from other brands, it's the same. At first I thought it might be time to buy a new pack, but I got new ones two days ago and they already started smelling weird again. I use good shampoo, conditionner and heat protectant before straightening them, even after washing them, they smell weird.

My real hair don't smell like that. Whenever I wear my hair extensions to work, it makes me self-conscious, I am always afraid people are gonna think I don't wash my hair, I don't even know if they notice it but I sure do.

Does it happen to any ladies who wear hair extensions? I have clip-ins and only wear them to work, so it's even more weird they smell so bad since I don't have them on my head 24/7.

That's strange. What kind of shampoo do you wash them with?

That's a great shampoo, I'm not sure why this happens? Very strange. I'm sorry I'm of no help! Hope you figure out what's going on!

What brand do you use. None of hair sourced today is 100 % remy or Virgin. It's B.S. The brand I only last about 20-30 wears but They look and blend good and are thick enough but crap. today they mix in synthetic and animal hair. probably what you smell. Another long time brand i used never smelled like this. mine i can smell before i put them in and run the flat iron over them. They have a weird burnt smell and something else I can't put my finger on. But it doesn't linger.

There's a spray called Ozium, you get it @ auto supply stores, or Target. It really helps w/smells, even smoke. Idk if it can be used on hair. There's gotta be something that can be used.

I use 2 different brands, Velvet/Goddess, they're around $130 a pack so I don't expect them to be really 100% virgin remy as they claim but they last around 3-4 months, look natural and have a nice texture. I am so cheap when it comes to my hairdo, a lot of girls I work with who wear extensions buy them at the same place. I am not willing to pay $700 on hair extensions at an upscale salon.

Does it smell like mink? I only know because my mom had a mink coat growing up or burnt? I don't think that spray will help if it's because animal hair is mixed in. I know the brand you use. My hair supply place use to carry those. they looked good condition but didn't come in my color. Your lucky you get that much. I usually get 2 trips and when I just worked 21 shifts the most I work in M.B. I had to get a new pair before i went back. weft hair is never going to be 700.that's installed hair. The best hair is Bohyme. It doesn't come in my color. The lenghths are odd 16 is the longest then it goes to 22 or somethng and it's 300. I pay 149 and 30 for him to make them. comsidering the most I get is 30 wears rhat's ridic. The guy that owns the shop I get my hair said hair has gone down hill in the last 4 years because sourses aren't as plenty as they use to be.

I notice the same with mine and I use all different brands labled 100 percent human hair.
All of mine smell wierd and burnt even after washing. My extensions are coloured (4/27) My friend who has dark brown almost black extensions doesn't seem to have this problem. I also notice with hers they last longer so I always wondered if the problem smell and wearing out had to do with the colouring process.

Make sure they are completely 100% dry before you straighten them. This will most likely help a lot.

I wear 1B (natural black), they do last longer and feel softer than when I used to dye my hair and had to buy colored extensions, but they still have that weird smell...I always leave them to air dry the whole night and make sure they're fully dry before straightening... :/

They almost always bullshit and throw synthetic in there. I learned this when my hair stylist tried to dye some extensions I bought her and dye just rolled right off them, didn't do shit. It may be that you have 30% synthetic or something and you're burning them with your styling tools and that's the smell.

Mine don't smell great, the fact that I rarely wash them so I can get more wear out of them and that I smoke does that, but whatever, I use a lot of perfume and strong smelling hair spray and no one has ever commented, not even my boyfriend who gets a wiff of my hair every night he goes to sleep.

I've noticed Pantene conditioner has really strong perfume in it....after using other odor reducers, you can try that & see if the perfume masks some of the odor.

I think you guys are right about the mix of animal and synthetic hair. I smelled my co-worker's hair yesterday (lol) and although they looked damaged because it was time to get them replaced, they smelled better than the ones I have, just like her shampoo. She has them permanently, they're not clips, but I'm not willing to spend $550 every 4 months on my hair and $300 every 2 months for a touch-up!! She just told me it's a good hair extensions brand but did not tell me the name.

Maybe I should try some hair perfume, I'm just afraid the scent will mix with the weird smell instead of masking it and make it worse lol.

Yeah now that I think about it, when I first take them out of the package they smell ok, but after wearing them once or twice for a short period of time even if I did not sweat (summer is so cold right now here) so shouldn't be too dirty, they start smelling bad, and that's probably because I started using hot tools on them. Ugh there's SO MANY split ends on my extensions and I got them less than two weeks ago.

I used to have permanent hair extensions, but honestly I so prefer my clip ins. They did smell a lot better but I think it was partly that they got washed all the time and I was buying hair through my stylist then. It was a lot of money, the hair got bad faster, the color turned faster, and there were these horrible in-between appointment periods where they would be slipping... I spent a ton more money on them then and saw a lot more damage to my hair, and I remember my friends always used to comment about "styling your hair that way makes it look more natural." With my clip ins I've dated guys who didn't even realise I had them.

I was using Chi silk infusion prior to straightening my hair extensions. I recently switched to Tresemme thermal creations heat protectant spray, the smell is strong but not unpleasant, it really helps conceal the bad hair extensions smell! It's so inexpensive and works really well. I recommend it

I'm starting to think that there are more dancers who have hair extensions than those who get BA's. Just a fyi, I've very rarely noticed smelly hair (or extensions) on dancers. I'm more aware of the perfume/body spray. Or maybe I'm smelling a well- shampooed hair extension?
    I'm right 96% of the time. I don't sweat the other 5% .......................
