Default No money in Modeling, How does it work??

I feel its no money in modeling, especially urban models, from the outside looking in. I remember i met a chick who models but was broke ass hell, i mean this chick had tons of photo shoots done, but was still broke. She was driving this Toyota that would always give her problem, then she lived with her grandmother. She recently just posted photos of one of her photoshoots in some "local" magazine, but she is still broke. I dont get it, do these photographers get paid off of these chicks pictures??
I know plenty of females in my area who so call "Model" but they don't make money doing it,Its like their doing it for fun, i mean whats the point? What do the photographers get out of it? Do they get money just by charging these chicks to shoot them photos. I even know females who "Model" who never have jobs, they seem to "Model" for 'Free"..i dont understand this game..someone lace me..by the way i am new here

Its like acting IMO, only a very small percentage 'make it' to the top. There are plenty of other types of modelling besides fashion and glamour (which are the 2 which pop up the most in threads).

    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...94911696,d.dGY

if you try a search on modelling on stripperweb you will be exposed to heaps of info; and questions that you prob never though to ask.

If all else fails, why not ask the person in question why they do something? It's probably the quickest route to her motivations at least.

Modeling is like musicians and actresses. You have to work your way up or have connections in order to make big money. Also you can't just think you'll get one photoshoot or one modeling gig and expect to be rich. Gotta do it consistently and get with a manager or Agency who takes a fair commission to help find higher paying gigs.

Some girls will model for free just to get experience being in front of the camera and learn poses and get their feet wet before going out on real jobs or to build their portfolio for free without having to pay hundreds on a professional photographer. But this should only be done if you are brand spanking new. Once you gain the slightest experience it's time to pay for professionals to shoot your comp card and get paid work to build the portfolio and put food on the table.

Pro models make a few hundred to a few thousand per project. While top super models make even more. Remember Naomi Campbell said she wouldn't get out the bed for less than 10k
“Cook for him like a housewife, fuck him good like a nympho….pay the rent and the car note, he invests in me like crypto”

Yeah modeling is a very tough business to break into. There are A LOT of scammers and scumbags who waste your time...even if you get past all of that and find legit work, it's unlikely you'll make it big. The only ones who make it big are high fashion/runway types (you have to be 5'9+) or ones who get "infamous" through things other than their actual work (such as dating a celebrity, doing reality TV, hanging out with celebs in the party scene, being part of a scandal, or just plain old luck). It really is all about who you know and what connections you have. Models who do small gigs dont get paid a lot, or get paid consistently. Its very unstable money, you have to work hard to find jobs on a steady basis. Models who do photo shoots for free are NOT models. They are just building a portfolio as an attempt to be a model. Photographers who dont charge will shoot models in order to add to their photography portfolio. That is what they are getting out of it. Those are usually ameature photgraphers who are trying to build their photography portfolios.

Most "models" really aren't and there are all kinds of modeling jobs. Most modeling jobs are unsteady and aren't something to rely on regularly. Also, there are scammers, from people who claim you need to do test shoots for free, to so called photographers charging to take photos to all the online scams. You can make a decent living modeling but unless you are a fashion model with all the requirements (like tall and thin)you probably won't become wealthy. You still likely won't become wealthy then either but a better chance.

OP: You mentioned the urban modeling scene..... Yeah, it's pretty dead. I used to want to do urban modeling when the urban magazines/gigs were WAY more popular like 6-7 years ago. Now with Instagram, every urban "model" is showing the goods for free (or for followers.... Smh) online. The market is extremely over saturated also. Every girl with a decent face and plastic surgery thinks she's an urban model.

A lot of those girls are exaggerating about their income from these gigs. They are sometimes only working in exchange for the photographer's pictures. For some girls, it's more about portraying themselves to the public as a model (and living that lifestyle) then actually getting paid gigs.

As previously stated, it seems to be all about who you know. Urban modeling magazines aren't as popular as they used to be (when's the last time you've seen a KING mag in a store???), and the girls who are featured in their seasonal release magazines are usually fucking a very popular rapper/involved in a scandal. If you're one of those girls who can get close enough to those guys.... They are able to open some doors for you in that arena.

With all of the free "content" on Instagram nowadays, I really don't think it's worth it. I'm sticking to stripping.

I retired from modeling because it was not worth it.

The photographers all expect you to pose for free, even if you're experienced and gorgeous, because there are so many girls who are just in love with the ego boost they get from a guy wanting to take their pictures, so they do it for free.
I was getting paying gigs, but they were generally not huge amounts, and it wasn't worth it to me to drive the usually 20+ miles to the location plus prep time, for the money. Then you always have the thought in the back of your head that the guy might kidnap and kill you; I used to bring an escort, but there has been a huge trend towards photographers considering that to be "unprofessional" - "would you bring an escort to your day job? Nooo" Well, at my day job I'm not alone with a strange man in a hotel room!

From what I've heard, even the agency-signed models don't make a crapload... and it's not super consistent work either... Agencies take somewhere between 20-30% of your booking fee as well. I think I read somewhere that models at a Vogue shoot netted around $300 for the day :o

The only real money seems to be in nude modeling and/or fetish, which I was unwilling to do because of my vanilla careers. Even if you do break into that market, you will become 'old news' very quickly. Most full-time independent models (that I know of) end up traveling 9 months a year.

Yeah the traveling can be annoying. Luckily I lived in a major metropolitan area but it often required me to travel 1-2 hours. Not to mention that you might pose for a photo that keeps getting used. I modeled for a guy who shot romance novel covers. Sounds cool but that photo ended up being used for other things and I only got paid the one time. However he can sell it many times. The thing I liked about modeling is it was guaranteed money. I got paid at the end. I know several photographers tried to push percentages on me but always made me think they were scams so I never did.

zomg this sounds so interesting. I always wonder about romance novel covers. The women always look ridiculously good looking. & The men always look like Fabio. lol

I was gonna suggest you try being a Hooters girl or hostess. Both jobs allow you to network for sugar daddies and influential friends. & There are so many "breastaurant" knockoff of Hooters that you don't need to go there if you don't want to....you can try a similar place with a better looking outfit.

Models don't work for Vogue for the money. Modeling for Vogue is more about the prestige and exposure, so they can get away with paying the models peanuts. Not saying that's right or anything, but Vogue (and perhaps other high fashion magazines with similar reputations) isn't where you're going to get rich as a model.

Commercial modelling can be lucrative if you land bigger campaigns. It isn't always glamorous work but can still be fun and you don't often feel you need to worry about safety as much as with some other types of modelling.

It was the weirdest thing, I met this guy through other people and he asked me to pose. He didn't really say what it was until months later when I saw it. I don't remember if it was a line of romance novels or self published or in between but it was weird. I think I was paid something like $100 for an hour's work. I've heard those who model for the popular lines of books can become successful and several have gone onto successful modeling and acting careers (like the Sweet Dreams books).

I just don't understand because I feel like sure, you'll get exposure, and then what? Can you command a higher price, or are you just attracting more photogs that want to pay you $300 for a 10 hour day?

The idea with Vogue is that it'll turn the model into a supermodel and she'll get things like cosmetics which is very lucrative.

Models who makes most of money are commercial models. Also if you become a face of the brand. Or model for a catalog or site.
Runways also does not pay much like 60$ For whole event.
Magazine also does jot pay much for photographers too.
Magazine is like ad for everyone, products, models, etc.

^Yes, if you wanted work that isn't high end money but potentially quite regular, if you have an exceptionally lovely body part you can get decent work as a body part model. Also fit modelling for clothes brands, no matter what size you are.

These types of modelling are unlikely to make you famous, but they pay the bills.

Well, I guess my stripper greed would prevent me from ever modeling for Vogue, bahaha.

Modeling is only profitable if you are with an agency and have the height, facial bone structure, body proportions, and weight but mostly connections to do it full time. Or else you end up being another 100-200 dollar for the day "model" depending on how much clothing you are wearing. Sad but true.

The best thing a photographer uses is, "free shoot but great for exposure!" ....UMMM no. You get paid from day 1 if they really want you.

Don't get suckered in. My sister is now landing jobs with agencies for both commerical ad modeling and acting now that she has an agent compared to doing that BS for free for exposure things she was doing. She is no size 4 prolly 6-8 size and hardly exercises but it works for her because she has a cute face. They pay you crap even with an agency because they know anyone would be happy to be booking that job simply to get paid anything in the industry and have that on their resume. She has another job as a waitress with a UC bachelors degree! It's a shame and not worth diving into that industry since it's a dead end anyways.
