    Default Windows 10

My computers have received the Windows 10 upgrade notice; who's excited?

It looks promising, but I think I'll install it on Expendable Laptop first. My only concern is that it no longer supports Media Center, but I could never get the TV tuner card to work right, anyway.

Im not going anywhere near it for now. I have way to many applications and hardware I need for work. And if they aren't compatible with with windows 10 I could lose a lot of money. Going from Win7 to 8 was difficult. 8.1 was even more of a problem to be honest. Many apps are still coded for WIndows 7 and haven't made all the upgrades.

I got the notice and put my name on the list to get it when it releases, but I haven't heard anything about it. That's a sad state of affair and I call myself an IT person. PFFFTT!!!

I'll wait for Windows 20. Seriously. I'm getting tired of all of these operating system upgrades. I just want to set it and forget it. A computer is a tool. A tool is not supposed to create this many ongoing headaches. Unless you are a heavy duty user of esoteric features, changing operating systems is nothing but a huge annoyance. Just how many times do they need to revamp systems that, for most people, do little more than support word processing, spreadsheets, Internet access portals, Adobe reader and printers? In fact, we use a few more data intensive programs in my office and those work fine too on existing systems.

I'm also tired of the automatic updates the Microsoft routinely sends for my existing operating systems, which invariably force me into shutdowns at the most inconvenient times.

Truth be told, I'm still pissed about having to convert my business computers from XP. I have upgraded multiple times since and can't do anything that I couldn't already do on XP. And yes, I know about the security issues, but how many more versions do we really need?

Previously, I always waited until it was time for a new computer rather than pay for an OS upgrade. My old XP machine lasted a looong time.

I'm curious about Cortana, especially since I heard that an Android version may be coming out.

So, who has taken the plunge? I installed it on Expendable Laptop before the machines I actually care about. It seems... okay I guess. I wasn't terribly impressed with Cortana; for most of my inquiries, she just brought up a page of Bing search results.

I didn't get too much of a chance to experiment because shortly after the install, Expendable Laptop refused to boot. I tried everything I could think of, but couldn't even use any recovery tools because it wouldn't recognize the DVD drive. I don't know whether Win10 killed EL, or EL was just too old and battered to handle Win10. I might be able to fix it, but I don't want to waste time on a computer that's worth about ten bucks.

Regardless, I'm hearing some stories about people having issues with Win10 and am perfectly content to wait a while before installing it on Main Computer.

I finally installed my free copy of Windows 10 on my personal laptop about a week ago. I'm used to Windows 8.1 and now I have to get comfortable with a new OS. I'm probably the last computer geek in the whole that hadn't switched over yet. I imagined everyone is looking at me and saying "she's such a dumb ass for not switching". Okay, I switched. Happy Now!

The important question is: how is your gaming performance?

Don't worry E.L. You aren't the last one. Hell, I was on Windows 10 (beta, technical preview) and went back to Windows 8.1 after about 5 months. It looked like (for me at least) it was in the nick of time, as I have an Alienware 18, and it seems that the latest (at the time) nVidia GeForce drivers + Samsung display planel + Windows 10 = causing the displays to blow up.

    See thread here:

Notebookreview.com - *** Windows 10 + NVIDIA WHQL Drivers are Killing Alienware and Clevo LCD Panels ***
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thre...panels.779449/

I agree with Rick Dugan. All of this time, money, and good effort to "start with Windows desktops" (WinXP) just to "end up with Windows desktops" (Win7/8.1) .

Alienware 18, very cool. This is my laptop. It's showing its age a bit more these days. I love PC gaming, but I can't afford to spend more than $1,500 when I upgrade. It wasn't top of the line when I bought it, but it was close to mid range. I only bought it a year ago and it can't meet the minimum required specs for Arkham Knight.

I'm a really big computer nerd. I could talk all day about computers. I want to go the route of my brother in law, he has a masters degree in computer science and worked for Microsoft, but my math skills are lacking, I barely made it through calculus.
