Default Fear of flying, what to take?

I'm not currently on any medication but just wondering if there is something I can take just for when I have to take a plane to see family this summer? I'm scared I might get a panic attack. Thanks in advance.

And it's OK to take it just when I have to take a plane or do I have to take it regularly? How do you feel when you take it? Does it make you sleepy or just calm?

Yes, it's ok to just take it when you need it. It doesn't make me drowsy or sleepy or anything, just calm and positive. I take .5 to 1mg, depending how I feel that day, right before I get on a plane.

[email protected] I took Ativan once - I believe the .5mg - before eye surgery and it did nothing for me I was still freaked out. Now the laughing gas at the dentist. That sh*t right there had me calm and happy lol!

DON'T take it regularly if you don't need to, it's a benzo and can get addictive very quickly.
.5 mg should do it for a flight. It takes about a half hour to kick in (for me at least).

You could also try to stay up as long as possible before the flight, so hopefully you're literally too tired to panic and you sleep most of the flight. I find that to be a good option.

Have you tried any sort of 'thought therapy'? I have the same kind of issue, since developing full-blown anxiety, where I'm not fond of the idea of flying because of the fear of a panic attack. I tell myself that I'm literally just having anxiety over the idea that I might have a panic attack, there is no reason to have one since I've never had one before. Another thought that helped was "Okay, so I have a panic attack. It's not the end of the world. Yeah they suck, but tons of people have panic attacks on planes, it's not new. It will pass, I will get over it, life will go on." I think we get so caught up on the idea of an attack, that we don't remember that it does go away. It's like a vicious loop

I hope your eye surgery still was a success! How did you calm down? I'm afraid of freaking out too that's one of the reasons I havnt had eye surgery yet.

I wish I could think like "is okay, it's just a panic attack. When I'm in a panic attack I can't think of anything. I'm just experiencing complete terror, I can't breath and I'm going to die.

Thanks girl! Well I think a part of the extreme nervous feeling was trusting someone with my eyesight or in this case here of flying trusting someone with our life. But I realized once this Ativan they give me or maybe a placebo they told me was Ativan was not helping calm my nerves, reality kicked in and I figured if I didn't trust him to do good work that me freaking out would make it worse. And my head was kind of restrained so I couldn't move that part of my body - good thing cause I didn't want to do anything to cause him to mess up.

It helped to breathe through it and think positive thoughts. But yeah I hope your flying experience goes well for you. Ive been flying since I was a kid so it's like jumping in a car to me. You may even fall asleep on the flight. The sound of the jets is like a white noise and I usually fall asleep especially on early morning or night flights. Maybe you can have a kind friend go with you for support
