Question Question For Homeowners Who Rent out their Homes/Rooms

I would please like info on how I can find out if the owner of the place I'm renting has a co(certificate of occupancy).
Is it public information that I can obtain online? And if so where would I begin my search?
I am living in a converted garage, and am subleasing from a really shady person who says she is leasing the entire house from the owner.
    Thank You for your help.

depending on the state look up the 'registry of deeds' and many have a free search function and you can find the name of the owner of the property from the address. Occasionally leases may be filed there, but I doubt it.

Agreed on searching the county 'registry of deeds'. Local town property tax rolls can provide a similar search capability with fewer total entries to search through ... and most township tax rolls are now available online.

However, linking a property's street address to the property owner's name doesn't really help in regard to the actual info which Glamourmilf is seeking. Generally speaking, rental / lease terms involving the landlord's stated conditions for the tenant to sublet, and any 'rights' and responsibilities of resulting sublessees, are not entered into any public record. Outside of the specific terms listed in the lease itself, generally speaking, state and local renter's 'rights' laws only cover 'master' tenants i.e. persons whose names actually appear on the landlord's lease.

Indeed this can sometimes leave sublessees in legal 'limbo' if there are problems between the landlord and 'master' tenant(s). For example ( and I hope this isn't actually the case ), if Glamourmilf's 'master' tenant doesn't in fact have lease terms which grant that 'master' tenant the landlord's permission to sublet, Glamourmilf's present legal status relative to the property owner / landlord may be an illegal 'squatter' as opposed to a legal subtenant, even though rent payments are currently being made to the 'master' tenant.

A certificate of occupancy is another way for a city to screw people out of money, while the politicians claim they have not raised taxes.

Since we have no idea where you are, there is no way to ascertain which department issues the certificate of occupancy, but try whichever department issues building permits.

It is unlikely your jurisdiction records certificates of occupancy in the real property records.
