Question How to catch up on sleep?

For my late-shift ladies out there...

How do you catch up on sleep after your shifts?

I work 9-2:30, and I'm usually in bed by 4:30. But then I wake up at 9 or 10 that morning just because my body isn't used to sleeping in so late. I drink natural calm magnesium, a hot cup of sleepytime tea, and I even took a Xanax last night to see if it'd help me sleep in. I used an eye mask to make sure the sun wouldn't wake me up, and I had the fan on for background noise.

Nope. I was up before 10.

This is getting to be annoying because I'm basically worthless the day after I work (like, I can't even enjoy the day off because I'm so tired), and then I oversleep the next night to make up for it, which throws my sleep schedule off for the rest of the week. :/

Do you have any sleep secrets to share?

I feel ya. I didn't like working the late shift because I liked waking up early but the money is better so late shift I must do.

I try to shower and decompress as quickly as possible after the shift - less than 30 min - and as soon as my head hits the pillow I'm asleep. I have to have 8 hours of sleep so if I wake up early in the morning, I'll just stay up but then I'll take a nap for like an hour or so in the afternoon to get my 8 hours. The afternoon nap also helps me fight fatigue working the late night shift.

I have the same problem. After my last shift (Friday) I slept in till 11:30am - the longest in weeks! Lately I've been waking up at like 7am ...when I take 1mg of xanax it definitely helps me sleep well. Also sometimes if I don't take one before bed (which I usually don't unless I can't sleep), then I'll wake up super early and just take half a milligram or so, which usually helps me sleep in a few more hours. But I don't like taking xanax on a daily basis since it's addictive so I try alternatives. Good weed (indica is more relaxing than sativa), chamomile tea, and valerian root pills are very helpful.

I know it's not exactly the same as catching up on sleep but I am the exact same way and I've been learning the art of napping
My body naturally likes to wake up in the mornings, so the day after I work I'm usually really tired and fall asleep fairly early in the evening to catch up on sleep. I've found that taking an afternoon power nap (like 20 minutes) sitting somewhat upright (not lying down under a blanket) help me rest & feel refreshed. It definitely helps me get through the day, especially when I work consecutive nights!

This is the worst aspect of stripping for me. It's so hard on my body being up late. I really miss having a club that I can work at during the day and make good money. Also paying to stay off stage was helpful and saved energy.
Anyway, you can't really catch up on sleep. Do your best to get 7-8 hours after your shift. Try a quick shower, and as others suggeted, chamomile tea. I also have black out curtains and that helps. After working a busy shift I usually need the entire next day to "recover."

Not to threadjack, but I heard about a dancer whose regular would buy her like 3 hours in the champagne room just so she could take a nap. I don't know if it was true but that sounds amazing! Ha!

^^^this is part of the reason that I used to dance five nights a week for 3 weeks straight, but then took the 4th week off entirely !!! This allowed my 'body clock' to return to normal.

Chamomile tea is an easy way to "force" sleep when your body clock is screwed up. Also, stop using caffeine entirely.

I use natural sleep aids. & It helps to have black out curtains in your room, or put a blanket over the window.

There really is no way to have a normal sleep schedule with this job. you will just have to suck it up & sleep at odd hours like the rest of us do ,otherwise go back to the vanilla world.

    ^^ I think that's a little harsh lol.

While I love doing what I do (and the money that comes with it), I could really use a better strategy for sleep. So really, any suggestions on here are a life saver. I work from midnight to 4 or 6am, sleep from 5 or 7am till about 2ish, and spend the whole day in a weird haze. Recently I've had to take naps too, even though I attempt to get the right amount of sleep. So at 6-8pm I'll zonk out for a couple hours then wake up and get ready for work. Might need to start my day off with tea high in caffeine or something, this hot summer weather has not been helping at all either... stripping aside, too much heat and blazing sunlight have always made me sleepy. I feel border line narcoleptic all day unless I'm working or at my pole class and would like to enjoy time not having the club on my mind 24/7.

Honestly just making time for sleep when the "sleep muse fairy" catches you. I don't have a social life so it's easy to nap when I need to.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this thread because I started two new jobs in the last month, one bartending gig where I am working until 3-3:30am and getting home around 4am, sleeping between 7 and 8 am most nights because I'm not the type to go straight home to bed after work anymore...I like to cook dinner and either unwind for a bit or get a few things done around the house before bed. My other job I need to leave the house at 8am sooooo....yeah. It's been fun trying to work this out. What has been working best for me is to force myself to wake up early on saturdays and/or sundays the day after my bartending shift. I try to plan afternoon activities these days so that the tiredness is not overwhelming and I'm not tempted to nap. This is the only way I can force myself to sleep at a semi decent time at the end of the weekend to get ready for my daytime job at the beginning of the week. Wednesdays I sleep as loooonnnggg as I want to catch up, since if I work it's not till night time. It hasn't been the most fun adjustment but it's coming. Tea doesn't really cut it for me as a sleep aid, this is going to sound kind of unhealthy but what works to make me sleepy is to have some wine and smoke a shit ton of pot. But I'm getting too old to be doing that all the time now, so I need to find an alternative. I have heard good things about melatonin but I need to look into it more. From what I understand it is a natural sleep aid and that's most of the appeal for me, no pharma sleeping pills thank you.

Wow. I really thought I was the only one who struggled to sleep normally because of work. This thread is making me feel so much less weird! My natural inclination is to sleep from around 2300-08 or 09, but on work days it's more 0400-1030. It's a big adjustment and I definitely feel it the morning after.

The only things I've found to be helpful are an eye mask, earplugs, and weed or Benadryl before bed. I usually get at least 6-7 hours of sleep this way, although I still have the occasional 0630 sudden awakening. It sucks having to basically put yourself into an artificial coma, though.

I try to nap before work or sleep in on days I know I will be working late. I don't sleep much during school months and usually dread going to work on the week-end, so it's my treat getting to sleep 10-12 hours before work, then the next day it's not so bad functioning with only 4-5 hours of sleep. The rest of the week I try to get 6-8 hours, sometimes difficult but I must get at least 6 hours, that's my minimum.

It's totally normal to struggle with sleep problems with our night job though. Humans are programmed to function during the day and sleep at night. When we stay up so late, our circadian rhythm and hormone levels are off, it takes time for the body to readjust.

I recently read that some people in studies reported having more restful sleep when they took Valerian root. I have been taking it the past three days because I have been having difficulty sleeping, and I really did feel far more rested on only five hours of sleep this morning. It might not help you sleep longer, but maybe if those hours you do get are more fulfilling, you won't feel the effects as badly.

Now that I'm working two nights a week, my sleep schedule is worse than ever. I hate waking up at 1 pm and going to bed at 2 am or later on nights I'm not working. I'm loving the extra money and it feels healthy to be working more so far, but work affects my whole week now. I think about work more, I'm less likely to do things like read / meditate when I wake up that late, and it makes me feel like a pile of poo when I sleep in like that. Ugh...

Have you tried polyphasic sleep cycles? I did that when I was in college and am beginning to practice it again. It's not ideal and doesn't leave much room for a social life, but it is a way to get enough sleep while working odd hours.

How I do it is I work my normal shift (4-12am) at the club. I got to bed around 2am and sleep until around 7am. I work at my day job until noon or so, then I sleep another 2-3 hours before going in to work. I drink coffee when I wake from each phase of sleep. I work at the club 3-4 nights a week, on the other nights I just sleep normally (11pm-7am). I have a home office, so I don't need to commute in to my company's office in the morning. This wouldn't work if I had to go to a regular 9-5 job.

If you want a social life at all, I don't recommend this routine. However, if getting up in the morning at the same time every day is important, this way of sleeping works great. It's how we sleep as infants, and if it weren't for artificial light, we'd still be sleeping like this our entire lives.

It's been years since I danced consistently and I don't think I'll ever sleep well again. Fridays I used to be up for almost a straight 24 hours every week for months, at my normal job and then the club at night.

    Jeeeez. Someones grumpy.

Have you tried melatonin? It's a natural sleep aid and in Canada you can get it over the counter. I find popping one of those, taking a warm bath with lavender and listening to soothing music usually helps me.

I also try to get in 8 hours of sleep but sometimes I can't do that all in one go so I take an afternoon nap.

I have the exact same shift and unfortunately I didn't start getting a good amount of sleep until I quit drinking alcohol. Alcohol does all kinds of nasty things that disrupt your sleep schedule. Also coming home hungry kills it as well so make sure to eat before or during your shift and not at all afterwards, not even a bite of food....digestion disrupts the sleep cycle as well. Dehydration also does this.

So bacically, although it doesn't sound like much fun I drink alot of water at work, avoid all alcohol, make sure I'm full, then as soon as I come home from work I do a few things specifically:

Come home, Lock door tight so I don't think about it. Turn off cell phone. Instantly make a cup of Traditional Medicinals Chamomile and Lavender tea. While it brews I take a short but super hot shower focusing it on my lower back, - this relaxes the kidneys and allows for overall restfulness.

Come out, drink some tea and climb into bed, fully nude onto clean sheets into a made bed. I turn on a fan for the white noise and allow it to blow lightly on my face and keep earplugs within reach.

If I feel wired still, I then pop in a non stimulating movie (i.e. no horror, violence, etc).. and get drowsy.

Best thing for me and usually works very well! I wish I had done it this way for years.

Someone was telling me recently they had a white noise machine in their bedroom. Like what they have at a spa or therapists office... I am going to look into that because I have the worst sleep habits in the world. Tea works well for me too.
