    Default Fine hair and Breakage

I wish I had better hair! My hair is fine, delicate and prone to breakage. I have a lot of it, it's long (mid-back), straight and I prefer it with layers because completely flat hair looks bad on me and the density of it really weighs it down. I towel dry my hair, then blow dry and use a little product. I want to be curling it but worried about more damage.

I've invested in good shampoo, conditioner and a hair mask (phyto from sephora) and it has made somewhat of a difference. I wanted to like Algenist but it doesn't work for my hair. Too much silicone weighs it down and makes it look really greasy. Any advice on heat protectors, brushes, products would be most helpful.

I've a similar type of hair, although mine's curly..
Personally, I used to like/use Phyto, but I dont' anymore, I feel they've changed their product.
Here's what I use: Onesta Hydrating Shampoo, (onestahaircare.com) it's sulfite free, but does lather which I like. Conditioner I like Sebastian Drench, & I use the leave-ins: Schwartzkopf Ultime Omega Repair Moisture 11-in-1 (walmart only), L'oreal Total Repair 5 Dry Oil, Pureology Color Fanatic 21, Sun Bum 3 in 1 leave in. Also African Pride Braid Sheen Spray - I use this mostly on my scalp as a refresher, but it's great for the hair too.
Have you tried Kerastace? Pricey, but they make specific prods for fine hair.
I use a mixed boar bristle brush by Mason Pearson. I don't run the brush through my length very often, when I do, I use a paddle, boar bristle only brush. I also have a rubber wide tooth comb, & another wide tooth comb but a little less in the wide tooth..when I comb my hair, I start @ the ends, & work my way up, gently. I never run a brush or comb from the scalp down. I wear my hair up in a bun a lot to keep the ends protected, I wear a light open weave cap a lot during the day to protect it from the sun (the Sun Bum helps).
For curlers, I have the foam, & the velcro. I don't use heat on my hair, unless it's really cold outside.
Yes, you definately need lighter products for your hair if it's fine. All of the above have worked well. Also, the macadamiahair.com line for fine hair.
    Good luck

Mine is similar to yours and I sometimes do loose curls by just curling the bottom of some clip in extensions and leaving the upper/real hair non-styled (the clip-in extensions will add volume and save your actual hair from heat treatment). Also, sleeping in coconut oil (using it as a mask) helps the damage.

get a micro fibre towel or old Tshirt to dry your hair. terry cloth is very damaging to fine brittle hair ( or any hair for that matter).

    get a silk pillowcase

your hair is long, so keep it on protective styling like braids or loose buns. it will help protect it from the day to day damage of having hair that long. if you do pony tails, make sure you dont put them in the same place or position every time, and never use rubber bands or hair ties with the metal in them.

do coconut oil overnight masks, and do a pre-poo with coconut oil a few hours before you wash. washing your hair causes hygral damage because of the expansion wetting and drying causes the hair shaft and coconut oil protects it. it seals the hair cuticle, penetrates deeply, and has a good affinity for hair proteins because of all the fatty acids in it. castor oil can be added for hair growth.

if you wanna curl your hair, do rag curls overnight. if your hair is brittle i would REALLY advise against all heat..even hair dryers. use it on cool setting.

never comb your hair when its wet or roughly towel dry it or put it in a tight hairstyle. your hair is defenseless when its wet and will snap real easily.

Trimming my hair once every four weeks is already making a significant difference for me. I'd gotten used to my ends feeling like straw (whereas the rest of my hair feels quite healthy). When you trim regularly, your hair doesn't split up half of the hair's shaft, which keeps the rest of your hair far healthier. And IMO, when you have such long hair (mine is mid/low-back), trimming a half inch off once a month isn't even slightly noticeable.

I put a little bit Vitamin E oil in hair after i wash it, and i use a hooded dryer to dry my hair. I only wash my hair once every 3 days, if i get sweaty or my hair starts to smell i use a small amount of dry shampoo to get it fresh. Since i started doing that with in a month i am no longer scared to use heat on my hair. ( flat iron )

Make sure your hair products don't contain too much protein. That will make hair weak and break off.

henna has saved my hair. a lot of people are afraid of it. and i was not keen on the idea of being a redhead. but i've been a henna head for five years now. i buy mine from hennaforhair.com if you're considering doing it, i highly suggest you download the free e book from the site and research it completely before you do it. henna and chemicals do not mix! but if you decide henna is not for you i hope you find something else that works for you

I went to a new salon/hairdresser this past wk, she used a prod. called India (made in Cali) it's line containing Moringa oil (sp). I love it! I ended up buying, w/her rec, the leave in. You only use it on wet hair.
After she colored my hair, I was able to comb it right out, w/o using the wet brush! That's HUGE w/my hair!

Take biotin and vitamin e-- those are both good for your hair and will keep it stronger.

I have very fine, brittle hair as well-- the last week I have been letting it dry naturally just to avoid the heat damage from blowdrying, I only blow-dry it now when I want to style my side bangs. Avoid bleaching it or using any heat products, if you want to curl it put sponge curlers or rollers in overnight.
