    Default Mentor? Nyc

I'm looking to audition soon in the NYC area and I'm in need of guidance. It would definitely help me beyond reading the articles and watching videos on youtube which I've been doing for weeks now.. I have an idea of what to do but I'm still a little timid. I need a push. Feel free to PM me! THANKS:*

You don't need a mentor, you need sales skills & the self-drive to develop those sales skills. This is also not the sort of industry where a 'mentor' can be trusted to have your best interest in mind, & they can cause a phenomenal amt of dmg to you if they don't.

Best thing to do is throw on your big girl panties & just take the plunge. There is a wealth of info on this site, esp abt NYC as it's one of the most frequently discussed locations.

I've just heard so many stories of girls that were lucky to have a vet stripper to help them through and give them tips.

You will have hard time finding a dancer who will be ready to help you. Unless it's a friend OTC. Not saying it's impossible but you gotta be cautious in this industry. Keep in mind that pimps might approach you using this "mentor" thing/I will help you make way so much money.

    ^...what?

Not very helpful 'advice' to give a newbie who's already struggling with self-confidence.

^^^ the thread was posted in the stripping forum not the newbie forum, so I didn't feel an obligation to pass up the obvious opportunity for humor / irony, nor an obligation to shield the OP from the fact that the New York City market is highly competitive.

However, in the way of 'serious' advice for a total newbie dancer in the NYC market, I would say this. Forget about Manhattan clubs until you get some dancing experience in less competitive clubs with less demanding clubowners and customers ... perhaps Queens or north Jersey.

I'm going to be training girls but not for free. If you want to dance I suggest learning while going like most of us. I've never found reading sales books helpful but i've been selling since i was 5. reading hustle hutt? never have, but it has helped girls here. also Ny is very competitive. you'll pay 200 plus a night. no one is going to have time to teach you. in the meantime try it .You many be a natural and if not read hustle hut or try strip and grow rich and go from there...

Lol I got your sarcasm.. &I'm aware of the abundance of completion.
Also aware of the threads criteria, but I posted a similar thread in the newbie forum and got mostly other new girl responses if any responses at all. So I decided to post here where I could find more experienced strippers and advice on "stripping" rather than just other girls going through the same thing. I figured this site is here for helping right? So I thought WTH. Thanks for the laugh though..

Thank you, Charlie. It's alright tho I kinda just looked at it, laughed, and then carried on. Nothing to get myself down about since my insecurities are mild.

I figured I was gonna have to do it that way. I kinda was just sharing my experience while hoping I'd have some luck. It's unbelievable how many articles and threads and videos I've watched. I just haven't been able to actually "practice" since I live in a full household. But I have probably just need to learn as I go and I have a great personality so I know that goes a long way as well. I just worked up a lot of over-thinking nerves I need to suppress.

&as I said to Melonie, it goes without say that there's a lot of completion here in just about EVERYTHING. I been here most of my life and experienced this with just about everything. So I figured stripping was no different. I'm currently looking into a few clubs with no house fees or no house fee for the first night. I'm just gonna continue to inquire at diff clubs and see which one I'm most comfortable, without the helping hand.
    THANKS:*

I got the impression from Melonie's post that I would rather trust a pair of boobs over a NYC stripper any day.

Seriously I did not feel comfortable looking for a mentor of any sort when I danced since I noticed a lot of the girls were either alcoholics, younger than I was by a few years (in other words not very mature or made poor decisions), or were unhinged in some sort of way. When you start dancing you'll see.

I mentored someone once and it turned out good since it happened naturally and we were compatible to be friends, but that is the only time I would do it. I was once asked by one club owner to kind of help out any of the new girls auditioning and teach them pole tricks and stuff. I usually don't talk to unknown girls and I was nice to one of the newer ones and it backfired. The girl tried to hustle me and make me lose money, so I called her out and told the owner to never put me through that again please.

^ Most clubs give you first house free. You could try several clubs and see how you do. like i said maybe you'll be a natural. Just bring enough to cover housemom, hair/ makeup, dj. So about 60-80.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That all I asked. I thought about that too, considering the nature of just regular women I deal with on a day to day basis. Throw in the competition and chase for money and it's ten times worse.

So thanks again for your advice, I'll keep those things in mind.

If you can find a mentor naturally then that is great, but I would tread with caution, especially in nyc. You just never know who you're dealing with. Even on this site, I have met a couple of good friends and also met less savory people. I don't think a lot of us here had mentors and I know its scary but you just have to go to the club and do it and get it over with so you don't get worked up from anticipation.

I basically have no choice now that my audition is on Wednesday. I generally resistant to trust so I'll use that to my advantage when coming into that setting.

It was nice to read about some of the experiences other girls went through. I've always been the type to do things myself anyway. Idk why this made me feel so different.

    Thanks:*

You've got more guts than me that's for damn sure. Manhattan clubs scare the hell outta me. You must have abs and balls of steel for a n00b to attempt Manhattan.

Hustle Hut is all the 'mentor' one needs on SW.

Yeah. I told her that and about strip and grow rich and free house fees but I was being sarcastic and extra. i think because she doesn't know how to quote. I need to learn to leave these threads alone...

The only kind of mentor in this biz that wouldn't screw you over would be a retired dancer no longer in the biz. And even then, she would probably still want something in return for her mentoring. Like the other posters have said, this isn't an industry where you can trust people to have your best interest at heart. There's a lot of jealousy and competition, dancers have to look out for themselves . Especially in NYC! It is cut throat there. The best advice I could give you would be to toughen up and have thick skin. Read as much about your club as you can so that you know what to expect when you work there. Be willing to work for it and compete. Don't act like you are new, carry yourself with confidence and like nothing fazes you. If you act nervous, people will sense that and take advantage of you. Be in control of yourself always.

Thank you ladies for your helpful advice(even the ones who answered mockingly). Lol Either way it helped tremendously. I'll update on how the audition goes. And I apologize on behalf of others that may have made this thread go a little sour. I'll try to maintain my positivity and be more accept of criticism next time. Have a great evening everyone. I worked in Manhattan after dancing only one year in another part of the country. I moved to NYC by myself without knowing what to expect and just figured it out by trial and error. I have a very laid back personality, but had to toughen up and vamp up my mental energy to work there-it's all about SALES, SALES, SALES. Although I was successful, the pressure wore me out after nine months and I moved.

I dis-agree with the posters predicting that you won't do well. You have a lot of toughness which will be needed. Based on your comments, I think your ability to think for yourself will serve you better than anyone else. You don't need a mentor. It's a crutch you will probably outgrow in the time it takes to get one.

I worked there before StripperWeb. We now have a great resource and a way to connect with others in our situation. Like anything else, sift through what pertains to you, and if you can, give back once in a while.

    Good luck with your audition!
