Default Game of Thrones hairstyles with hair extensions?

So being the huge GOT fan that I am, I have been completely obsessed with the hairstyles of Cersei, Daenerys, and Marjorie (Sansa I feel is sort of severe, and I really don't like look at all... they'e always going on and on about how beautiful she is, and I'm like huh?) on the show from the beginning. I know that the actresses are wearing $8,000 wigs that the costume designers purposely get dirty so that they will look 'natural' and then spend hours having their hair done for the show, but I'm trying to figure out how to do some of the simpler hair styles on myself with clip in extensions and not a wig.

I'm a pretty accomplished french braider (wrapping the braids in the back is my new task to learn) but my hair is pretty damaged and uneven and short right now, which is why I'm super dependent on the hair extensions, and I'm really struggling to do any kind of braid with clip in hair extensions since they start to show. The best healthiest my hair ever was when I went through a period where I just french braided it everyday, so I'm hoping if I focus on the braids it will give the front part of my hair some time to heal (that is the part that is the most damaged since I try to avoid straighteners but have no choice with my bangs when it comes to blending them in). I know there are probably a million wigs out I'm really not into wigs at all. For special occasions maybe, but not for everyday or simple nights out.

I've got some youtube tutorials on how to accomplish the specific hairstyles I want, but I'm wondering if any of you ladies have advice as far as doing the tutorials with clip in hair extensions...if regular clip in are the best, if theres another type I can use, any techniques you may have, since most of these girls in the tutorials have just naturally long thick hair.

Here are some of the looks I want:

    Easiest...

    Harder:

Marjorie's looks super simple... until you have to wrap everything up in the back. My hair is not long enough in the front to completely reach the back so it would have to somehow blend in with the extensions?

Look up Game of Thrones hair tutorials on youtube. The last photo of Cersei you posted has an excellent tutorial involving extensions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wdweKQ_0lE, although that style does require longer hair in general to hide the ridiculous fuck tons of synthetic hair the woman had to put in to get the style.

Seriously--youtube has this shit on lock down. The only real trick would be figuring out where/how to pin extensions to avoid them being obvious.

Be careful with french braiding your hair - if you do it too tightly, you can damage the hair shaft. Especially if you braid your hair when it's still wet (when hair is most vulnerable). Pulling your hair into tight styles can eventually lead to hair loss around your hairline.

I know this isn't the kind of advice you were looking for, but I thought I'd mention it!!

Yeah, I have some good tutorials bookmarked-- it'll probably just be a matter of practice. I need to get to a proper beauty shop to get some of those see-through tiny rubber bands as they most require them, but I've managed to get the simple Cersei look down. It was just a matter of get the right amount of hair vs extensions and using a shit ton of mouse and hairspray. I realised it's actually not even a braid, it's a twisting technique that's basically making your hair into a rope.

The last one I think will be too difficult, I'll leave that for my future wedding day and let a professional do that one! I don't think my hair would be long enough to hide the shit ton of fake hair needed, sadly.

They seriously have the most AMAZING wigs every on GOT... I just keep looking at Cersei's hair line and thinking seriously? it's really a wig? (though I guess that's what you get for 8 grand)

I found this video on youtube-- this girl is using clip in hair extensions to get Cersei's length, best video I have found for those of us with shorter hair using clip-ins.

I make a ponytail with clip in hair, damn constraction is very painfull to hold. Also, i broke all hair around the top of my head, now very short bunch of hair there. I dunno how poor actors sit there for hours in makeup, and those wigs, costums.

I don't think wigs are as destructive to your hair as extensions are. Wigs don't pull on your hair the way extensions do (or braids as Charlie pointed out) and obviously when you're styling your hair with heat products you're damaging the hair of the wig not your own.

I think wigs can look great, but to wear a wig in daylight and have it look good and natural, you really have to be willing to spend a lot of £, and it takes time to develop the skills to style the wig (a friend of mine back in LA is a stylist who only does wigs, she will style wigs for events, she makes a killing doing that as of few people can, but seriously the photos she has shown me are amazing, you would never know those women were wearing wigs). Wearing a wig in the dark light of a SC-- where the fake look is usually praised anyway-- is a different thing than wearing it to a vanilla job.

I unfortunately just have terrible hair genes as my stylist has told me. My brother gets his hair done by her and he's a boy so uses no heat products, and his hair looks no better than mine. Neither one of us really has to cut our hair, it just breaks off. Bad hair genes.

^I have that one saved! Yeah I love that look, it's one of my favourite Daenery's looks. I did the Margaery Tyrell look today:

It's a very simple look, just two small twists at the crown of your head, then a larger one above the ear, and then the biggest one underneath your ear... but with clip in hair extensions, it's hard to twist and not have them show. Most of the girls in these tutorials have pretty long hair to begin with and are just adding hair extensions to get the super long look so they only have them in the back, mine are clipped all around the front/top of my head for thickness/length so it makes it a bit more difficult. I found I just have to keep doing the twists over and over again. I would get the top twist perfect but then I would need some hair from that twist to hide the extensions to make the lower twist, so I'd have to take that first twist out again and re-do it. Was really annoying. But it looks good! Will definitely take practice to look anywhere near as good as Natalie Dormer's does, but I'll never be as pretty as Natalie Dormer is, sadly, so it probably will never look like that (I honestly don't even like the character of Margaery Tyrell that much, I just have been in love with Natalie Dormer since she played Anne Boleyn on The Tudors like seven years ago... she is the most perfect looking human being on the planet to me).

The Daenerys look you posted is the one I'm trying next, hopefully I can figure out a way to do the Dutch braids with hair extensions.

The one thing I have learned about hair extensions is that the two easiest hair extensions types for styling (at lest for me ) Is when I either have a full sew-in with a closure piece or tape in's. Tape in's are prolly the easiest since they lay in flat one inch strips.

Although I herd a lot of the hair in GoT is actually wigs.

    ^yeah they all have wigs.

My biggest tips for clip ins thus far-- I did a Cersei look today-- clip them back farther from your head, about 2+ inches, than you normally would. That way you get the length when you have to start doing the braiding/twisting but have your hair to hide them in the front.

I used to have those little beaded in hair extensions in the front and then sewn in ones in the back, those would be a hell of a lot easier to work with. But those beaded in ones destroyed my hair worse than anything I've ever done with it and could come out with a brush so quickly.

So after a few weeks of experimenting with a dozen different GOT styles, the following are my favourites and the easiest to do if you have hair extensions and do not have long hair naturally. I'll post youtube videos in case anyone else is interested in doing them! I honestly love doing my hair like this, it's so nice to have it out of my face with the hot weather, it doesn't frizz up and go crazy if it goes from being hot to raining (as London does) or is a bit humid, and I am no longer using any heat products on my hair at all. I just wash it, put some product in, make a middle part, and let it dry. Every night I put in rollers so that it will have the curls/waves that these styles do. I've tried using rollers before but I've always struggled with getting the top/front of my hair to look natural with them, but now I'm braiding that part so it doesn't really matter. I know this is going to make my hair extensions last SO much longer and my hair get healthy and grow quickly.

Cersei's look has become my go-to style. I either just do the simple robe braids connecting in the back (last photo) or I do the two rope braids connecting in the back with a four strand braid (first photo) if I have more time. It's super easy to hide hair extensions with this.

This is my favourite Daenerys style. It's really difficult to do a Dutch braid with hair extensions if they are pinned by the crown of your head, it takes forever as you have to keep starting over, so I just modified it by skipping the Dutch braid and sectioning off two pieces by the front of my head and doing two regular braids with them that I pinned back into the bun (since they looked weird tying them at the nape of my neck, but I guess you could do that as well). It's basically the Cersei look but with regular braids instead of rope braids. I prefer to just have the hair at the very crown of my head pulled up and to have some flowing curls above my ears so this allows me to do that as well. I know it looks complicated but it's actually really easy. I braided my old hair extensions, tied off the ends, and cut them off the weft to get the braids that you pin around the bun (which worked really well since it matched the colour of my hair perfectly).

Both these videos are good for Daenery's Dothraki braids which are super easy to do in fifteen minutes. The second video is in Italian but it's pretty easy to follow just by watching her. I've had no issues with hair extensions with this one, barely even have to check whether my tracks are showing. The only difficult thing with the Daenery's hair is her signature style is to have some pieces hanging around her face, it's hard to do that with hair extensions and not have the tracks show, and I need my own hair to blend into the braid I'm making to hide the tracks, but it does look really pretty if I can get it right!
I haven't found a video for the following style so if anyone has one let me know. I think it's just the same thing with a ponytail in the back though.

Margaery's looks are my favourite as she goes for big, voluminous curls and when it's pulled back it's still thick and curly and pretty loose so the look has lots of volume which I always go for with my hair (I HATE flat hair). I never do Sansa's styes as her hair is so flat and usually braided tightly against her scalp. This is one of my favourite ones to do and also super easy with hair extensions (you just have to get a handheld mirror and look at it from all angles as sometimes pulling the second ponytail can expose some tracks).

I think this is one of the prettiest styles, everytime I've worn my hair like this I've gotten tons of compliments on it with people telling me it looks so pretty and how did I do it. But it does take a while to do with the hair extensions. You have to just keep re-doing the twists until you get the right amount of of your hair/Extensions in each twist so the tracks/clips don't show. If I don't have time for all of that I'll do the look below, which is basically just doing the same twists from the look above and tying them in the back (only you just do two twists, not ten, saves a lot of time!).

The only annoying thing with M's looks is that Natalie Dormer has this very unique heart-shaped hairline on her forehead and if you don't have it it's hard to get the hair on the crown of your head to look the same.

Another easy Margaery look that is also pretty easy to pull off with hair extensions.

I'm not really a big fan of Ygritte or Melisandre's styles, but here are some good videos for them:

Melisandre (I think will be easy to do with hair extensions)

Ygritte (will be a bit trickier I think if you have very short hair in the front)

The two styles that I have been completely unable to do are one of my two favourites of Daenerys' sadly. I just can't get the hair extensions to blend without tracks showing. If anyone has any advice let me know. I think the other difficult thing with this style is the way it looks in the back, Emilia Clarke is wearing a wig so it's not going to part naturally, whereas it's hard to get natural hair to lie flat like that in the back without parting. But here are some videos:

And I'll eventually try to conquer this when I can find some Kanekalon hair that matches the color of my hair, I have highlights and haven't been able to find anything close yet and I don't feel like shelling out money on new hair extensions just to do a look like this:

And lastly here are three awesome videos that I just love-- the first video is by the girl that does 80% of the tutorials I use, she's by far the best, and it basically explains every single braid there is and how to do it. The second are her "Five Minute GOT Hairstyles" if you're in a rush (though the Melisandre one is hideous) and the last is the video I use to do my no-heat curls.

Hope you guys enjoy! Sorry I've had to make these into so many posts but it keeps limiting how many videos/pictures I can put in one. I'm surrounded by guys and tomboys who consider straightening their hair to be an ordeal right now and have spent so much time trying to master these hairstyles I just wanted to share my accomplishments with someone who would actually appreciate it!

On a side note, I would kill to have Daenery's white hair, if I knew it wasn't going to kill my hair

Daenery's hair is super-popular...I've been seeing it on girls a lot since the show really picked up steam (post-2013).

Slight threadjack- I know extensions and wigs from India are real hair and possibly cheaper than hair from other sources. Just sharing, imo if you want to do these hairstyles using extensions is better than frying off your real hair.

Oh and the other advice I have is to put some pomade on the ends of your natural hair, when you get to the point where your natural hair ends and you're just braiding hair extensions, your natural hair will poke out of the braid and the pomade helps stop that.. I also put some a more intense moulding creme on that part of the braid to make it look less messy.

^ sticky gel can do that too. (For people that feel like pomade is too heavy. BTW stickier gels tend to be pricier than drugstore brands of gels.)
