Someone here had an Alienware. I think it was Bigbootyjudy? She didn't speak too kindly of the brand. Is it a laptop? 8gb may not be enough for all the splitting that you do. But if its a desktop you can expand that. And the 3.1ghz is a bit low. Try it for a week and see if it meets your needs

The custom of ebay would make me nervous. The specs on it are great but do you have Windows Software? This one doesn't have any and would have to buy it and install it. I would want something that has the os on it and can be tested from the very beginning. Is there anyone locally that can build a computer for you?

My rent a center only has this computer and it's the best they have from what I can tell the rest are i5 and celeron .
Yes the Alienware is a laptop .

The guy on eBay has very good feedback and even has a 3 year warranty and the specs he has listed you can change around and make it custom , he also offers the os on his listings in case you want to add it

I was also thinking maybe I can still use my computer and the Alienware side by side until I get the custom one.

Also with the custom I'd have to buy a monitor

Yea feedback is important when buying online. Sometimes I use two computers to get the job done. It takes some of the load off of just the one. Give it a try. Windows 7 is still a great os but I would stay away from vista. The ebay computer does look like a much better deal.

I hate Alienware. They are nothing but the cool cousin of DELL. I know you said you would be renting it, but if you end up buying one, beware! My husband had one when he first started college. Shit would go wrong, he would send it in to get fixed, they would send it back with the same problem persisting. I would tell him what was wrong with it so he could request having the issue fixed, and (surprise) it would come back all better until the next problem and we would repeat it all over..

You would be better off getting to know the guys at your local computer repair/parts shop. See if they can help you with a custom build. It ends up being cheaper even if you have to pay someone to put it together for you.

I agree with the others though. That Alienware looks like crap. I go to TigerDirect.com or Newegg.com and search the minimum requirements for WOW (it's the only game I've been playing). The minimum requirements are usually great specs in camming. I usually upgrade the specs a little though. Don't get top of the line though, new computers are like cars, stupid depreciation. I'm eyeing a laptop for my husband that is on sale for about $1000 and it has a good gaming set up http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...334&CatId=3998 . It isn't perfect, but I'm an ASUS snob and it won't leave me broke.

My best friend got an Alien and while the specs looked impressive, he hated it. Like mentioned above, his laptop was not reliable and it kept breaking down. I had a dell, and my experience with it was ok. I didn't have too many issues, except the backlights in my screen did go out eventually, and now the hard drive is failing. Considering it was a laptop I bought in 2006, I would say that's not too bad. Dell used to have the best bang for the buck so to speak, but I no longer feel that is the case. If you want a lasting laptop of high quality, go for the Asus brand. My old one was a g50v (gaming) model bought in summer of 2008, and I could still use it for camming today if I needed to, but I have since upgraded to a 300$ Asus i5 that does the job just fine for sm on high quality. I don't split sites,, but I have run up to 3 on the i5 and it worked. I highly recommend you look into Asus gaming models, possibly customize one if so you wish. There are sellers on ebay for that too. One model I had looked at about 1-2 years ago was 1,700 usd but oh so well worth the specs. My friend with the Alien eventually upgraded to a gaming Asus and he raves about how happy he is with it and how worth the money it was.

Now I have to figure out to get asus aurora14 linked me too or the custom eBay one which ever is faster..although asus would be a laptop are the asus gaming just as good as a gaming desktops? I wouldn't want it overheating

Desktops are a better choice I think. Unless you need to move around. They are easier to upgrade and don't overheat like laptops do. I have an Asus and right out of the box it wasn't the fastest one but I had it modiefied and expanded to 16gb and now it runs like a beast. I can have 4 sites running at once on this thing.

I also use my lenovo laptop sometimes just for SM because it seems to be the site that takes the most resources.

Desktop will always come out ahead on power. Plus it is so much easier/cheaper to customize and upgrade. My desktop was the best ever and I would just upgrade 1 part at a time, she's 8 years old now and finally getting ready to be a storage vessel. But with the laptops, you get portability with a decent amount of power. My biggest gripe is that so much stuff is usually integrated. They have laptop holders with fans if overheating becomes an issue http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...asp?CatId=3486

Also, I noticed in your OP that the EBAY computer says "This System does not include an Operating System, and most computers on eBay don't. That's why we are offering a great deal on Windows XP, Vista and 7." Make sure you get an OS of at least Windows 7. XP no longer get customer support or updates and Vista blows.
