Default Should I quit my internship?

So I just recently started an internship in the city. My door-to-door commute is anywhere from 2-2.5 hours one-way. This internship pays 12/hr and I'm miserable. My hourly average is 5x that amount and I've barely done anything in the office.

On the bus back home, I kept asking myself 'why' -- and I started crying thinking about all the real money I'm missing out on. I can't even pay my rent with this internship.

    Advice

Yes. If your internship makes you feel awful then it is not the right path for you. Quit it and go for what makes you happy!

Life is too short to spend it doing things that make you miserable.

I feel for you, Remy. I have a job that I enjoy (when they actually have me in my room with "my" kids, instead of "floating" from classroom to classroom to relieve so and so, or cover so and so's lunch break), however the pay is shitty, it feels clique-ish at times (Working with women...smh...), and the company has ridiculous demands and expectations for the shitty amount that they pay us. SMH.

well depends what do you need the internship for?

And yeah unless you have another stream of income that pays rent and this internship is for resume building / networking then, if you aren't able to pay the basics then its kind of a waste of time. Or perhaps your rent is too high and you need a roommate or something else to decrease your expenses.

Is it possible to explain to them your current situation (fade that you're camming) and ask for a break until you can get all your ducks in a row? Say you can't commit at this time because of finances but would love a second chance when you are more able to commit to them and yourself. Is it possible for you to go back when you are more stable financially/time wise etc?

I hear ya lady... dropping my vanilla career for adult work full time was one of the toughest things I ever had to decide on. I did adult work part time for years but when I did the switch to full time I had panic attacks the first while thinking about the time I had put into my career, my schooling, not being able to go back (contacts, jobs etc). But struggling I got to where I want to be now. Not saying that you should do this but if it's something you are definitely considering committing to full time then yes it's not always a bad idea to take a big leap. I read on here once something along the lines of you can stuggle getting by or struggle making it to the top. Still struggling either way. That really motivated me to bust my ass into work and put in the time and effort I did in my vanilla career. Not easy but worth it years later. I did it the first time I can do it again type thing...

People tend to get upset/sad/worried/scared when things change especially something big because it's a new blip in their life pattern they are not use to. Change and unfamiliarity is scary as it's an unknown. If you have a plan, are able to prove to yourself you can provide yourself security, money etc it may not be so bad after all. But also keep in mind that some changes/choices in life cannot be undone.

It sounds like you may already know the answer to your question, but I will say, if the internship is going to majorly benefit the career path you want to be in I'd find a way to make it work. That being said, from what I read, the commute, that wage and the fact that it doesn't sound like they have you doing much valuable work experience would make me question things also. Sometimes exploitative labor is wrapped up in a nice idea called an "internship".

I left a career I hated for camming and over the last year I have busted my ass volunteering in the field I want to get into and I just got a vanilla job, but it's in my dream career path. It's only part time and the wage is crap (it's for an NGO) so most of my income is still going to be through camming, but the vanilla job is worth the salary decrease for the experience I will get out of it - plus I love the work.

So it all depends on what you value and whether or not this internship can help get you to where you want to be.

Well I just recently got my own place for next month (after being miserable with roommates for the past 4 years). So I need money for a sofa, mattress, bed frame, dresser, etc etc. And I can't make that by working this internship.

After bus fare, lunch in the city, and taxes, I'm walking away with 200/week. It makes me sick that I can make that at home in far less time.

Also thinking about how this summer is my last official summer as a student to really make a nice amount before the semester starts again.
