    Default Buying a new laptop

    Hi everyone,

I'm humming and haaing over buying a new machine. I want to get a pc to avoid the issues I've had camming from a mac (various sites not running on a mac/software issues/split camming issues. I've never had much luck running a parrallel)

I've looked at this refurb which seems ok but is it too good to be true? http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/pro...aptop-Win-8-1/

Otherwise thought of getting one build custom via ebay or elsewhere.

I've stared at the 'incredibly detailed guide to computer shopping' thread a lot but I'm not that techy.

Any opinions on wether the laptop in the link is worth it or recommendations to people building custom in the UK?

Laptop over desktop due to travel.

    BIG THANKS xxx

Sorry that I'm not able to give you a straight answer, but when I'm considering purchasing an item, I sometimes go on Amazon.com to do a search of reviews it's received from other people.

^^^ No worries, thanks for the input, will do! I had a techy friend look at the specs on that machine and compare them to the 'incredibly detailed guide' thread, but then his suggestion was to ask on here .....cos camgirls know best

Processor is almost equivalent to an i5, but is an integrated unit. It cannot be upgraded. Memeory good, storage awesome. I can't figure out how to get to the rest of the specs. There aren't a lot of details in that link. I don't know what type of memory or graphics is being used. I hate refurbished materials, and this only has a 3 MONTH warranty. I'd say no unless I could see more info.

Cheers Aurora, much appreciated. As of next week a friend has offered me a loaner PC laptop for a while - which I'm really pleased about as it means I can test drive split camming and working extra sites without laying out the cash first!! PHEW.

If that's equivalent to an i5 I wouldn't get it, I would look for an i7. If you work on SM you know they're always updating. Who knows what or when the next update will be. I think its best to have the latest computer specs so that you won't have to buy another computer in a year or 2 because SM decided to update again.

Thanks Blovely, I'm going to give the borrowed pc a whirl, hopefully I can keep it long enought to earn the money for a custom build and will use the ideal specs as laid out in the guids on here.

Thanks everyone who has chipped in advice!! The guy who looked at that PC for me works in IT - but cam girls really DO know best!!! xxxxx

Nolita I've got a macbook pro, I didn't by an 'air' as I figured the memory was very low...would be kind of like trying to cam on a notebook.

I've always used macs, it's the system I understand but it's NOT the system most camsites and software is geared towards. You can try to install a parrallel system but I was never able to get my mac format logitech to talk to my pc parallel. Also hardly any of the split camming software comes in mac versions.

Possibly some one will come along who is way more expert, and who has found ways to do webcamming cartwheels on their mac, but that's not me. I'm getting a loaned pc on Tuesday and checking out that route. Tho I'm also gonna meet up with a camgirl in my friend network who runs a mac system and do a bit of skillshare with her. i find theres ALWAYS more to learn!!

Okay! Has anyone here had any good experience using Macs? Chime in, please! I'm so disappointed, thought a Macbook Air would do the trick. I've had good experience with my desktop PC but all my PC laptops have been SUPER slow.

I'm using my boyfriend's Mac book air to cam. I really don't understand anything about computer, my boyfriend helps me with that. He says that the Mac Book air does the trick for now but for longterm I really have to get another computer. He thinks that a Mac book pro would be better for camming but he wants to build a tower computer for me eventually.

When I cam the CPU usage climbs up to 80-85% and after a while the fan is working non stop, and apparently this is not good. Since there is not a lot of ports I had to use a usb hub to plug the ethernet cable and my mouse was freezing all the time. I gave up on the ethernet cable since using my mouse is more important. I'm also using a hdmi cord to plug my laptop to my 32" tv, so that might slow down things as well. I never tried to cam only using the laptop, maybe that would be different.

    Hope that helps.

I use a Macbook Pro, its fine with MFC and I am primarily an indy cam model so never split cam, also I like the video editing software built in. Pros are, few annoying updates, nice interface. Cons are that is doesn't play well with split camming software and Logitech in general. I do use a Logitech c930e cam.

Personally, when I also run a pc I always end up using my Mac while waiting for the pc to get all its shit together, but if planned to split cam and work big box sites would buy a pc specifically for that and get the highest internet speed available (cuz I'd still use my mac for stuff)

Macbook Pro tho, not Air, too weak and not enough ports.

Be careful when you buy tho and stare at the specs, things I noticed AFTER the fact: slower usb ports than I wanted and NO firewire port!!!

Also make sure you get the logitech for Mac - every other logitech isn't compatible.

I have the Logitech C920. Can anyone vouch for using that with a Mac? Sorry to flood the forum! I can add that HP laptops are shit. The one I bought was $400 and it's slow as hell.

Your cheapest and best option, imo, is to build a PC. I enjoy the flexibility of a laptop, but they become obsolete much faster than a PC, and you can upgrade/replace essential hardware like video card, MoBo and RAM instead of just having to start over. And there's lots of hacks you can use to making camming from a tower computer much more flexible, like using a USB extension cord and a tripod for your cam.

If you're not sure about how building a computer goes, you do have two options- a) build it yourself. The r/buildapc subreddit on reddit is very informative. If you're unaware, reddit is a social media site and meta-community. You could post (anonymously) that you are a camgirl and people will give you tons of info. And obviously, you can glean more information from random web sources as well. There's also b) the option of hiring someone to build a PC for you; lots of amateur computer nerds will do it for about $100-$150, but you're looking at paying about $150-$250 to hire a professional. Don't just believe amateurs though; ask for references.

If you're totally set on a laptop, I recommend either a Lenovo or Mac. I've had a Lenovo for 2 years and it's still running great (granted, I only use it to cam like 40% of the time) and isn't obsolete. They have solid hardware/computer design and can sustain a few smacks or spills. I've never had a Mac but I know they're like the gold standard for what a laptop should be (OS not withstanding). Dell is more pricey than they should be, but their warranties are solid- if your computer goes caput within 3 years of you buying your first one through no fault of your own, they will upgrade you to the next model for free. They're not the best laptops but they will do. I've had Acers/Asus/HP laptops and every single one were junk and died within a year. If you don't have a spare computer it can be devastating financially to lose your computer suddenly. So do your best to ensure that this is the best decision you can make financially.
