I bet he thought it was a great idea too...until he was about 50 feet in the air.

What a knucklehead- parachuting from his platform to leave the baloon cluster and platform drifting about presenting a hazard to other aircraft not to mention a possible uncontrolled descent into a populated area.![]()
At least some other high profile "stuntsters" stuck with their craft for a landing (of sorts). Look up "Lawnchair Larry Walters" for his 1982 stunt over the greater Los Angeles area in Wiki. His entanglement with powerlines blacked out some areas for several minutes. Unlike other categories of aircraft, a baloon is almost totally at the mercy of the winds.
The "almost" requires some explanation. A regular baloon can change altitude by stopping/resuming the gas fired burners, or throwing ballast overboard. It cannot readily change direction at will, but with planning/adjustments can utilize the winds aloft to get to where it wants to go. I had the chance to ride in a baloon once, flying with a "gaggle" of ~ 6 other baloons. One odd thing that I noticed baloon pilot taking with him was a few cans of shaving cream. He utilized the shaving cream to determine wind shift with altitude. If the stream of shaving cream drifted to the right, he'd know to descend baloon to alter course to the right, climb to alter course to the left.
t666- I haven't seen the movie "Up", but I did google "Jonathan Trappe". Unlike the other "stunsters", Mr. Trappe is actually a certificated baloon pilot. Viewing the YT videos, his setup is more professional than the others insofar as equipment/communication devices/planning. A baloon cluster is more challenging than a regular baloon in that your descent control is dependent on shooting a(some) baloon(s) out of your cluster. Once that is done, you'd better hope that you have enough ballast to throw overboard should you subsequently want to climb (or worse counteract a higher than desired descent rate.) So much easier to modulate the burner cans as needed (provided you have enough fuel)
As a FYI- Baloons have the right of way over all other categories of aircraft. Bonus Question:Who can correctly name the hierarchy of right of way amoung the following categories of aircraft: Airplane, Airship, Baloon, Glider, and Rotorcraft ?

Yeah, passing aircraft radioed into LAX about him. I'd pay MONEY to hear those calls.
"Um, Flight 325 to LAX tower.... Uhhh.... You're never gonna believe this!"
Actually a couple of guys have died doing this. Here's one (Sorry it's wikipedia, but all the news reports i found on this guy were in Spanish).

I would have pissed on myself.
This is too crazy. I would never put my life and health in jeopardy for some publicity. He's lucky he came down unscathed.
