    Default Synthetic Wig Care

    Hi everyone!

I've been reading through our forums about synthetic wigs and most talk about which wigs to buy and where to buy them from. Could I get tips from other dancers about how to take care of my wig once it's bought?

I've gone through about three wigs at this point. What happens is that my wigs will get really ratty really fast. I'm on day 3 with a long, black synthetic wig and already it looks like trash. Mostly, it will get bunched up and tangled, and stop having a smooth texture to it. It's also limp and doesn't flow like real hair. The hair will get into groups that stick together, groups of like 20-30 strands that decide they don't want to join the rest of the hair.

For my last wig, which came to me kind of sticky, I would wash it after each shift and curl it. I would let it soak in hair extension shampoo, squeeze (NOT twist) the water out, then do the same with hair extension conditioner. Then I'd put it in curlers and blow dry it. That would work okay, until the end of my shift, when it was totally destroyed once again. Basically, I don't think I was treating whatever the real issue was, just a symptom.

I thought that if I bought a nice wig that feels soft at first it would solve my issue. But no -.- it was exhausting to have to wash my wig out after each shift. I wanted something lower maintenance. I just bought detangling spray for the wig, but I have to brush the wig out after I do anything! A lap dance, stage dancing, anything. -.- At this point I don't think it's the wig quality. I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong, so I'm reaching out to the community!

Well, it sounds like you're doing a lot..can you possibly get a real hair wig? They're supposed to last longer, & be easier to take care of.

^^^agreed. I wear wigs alot and I always tell my dancer friends don't invest in synthetic ones for this reason. You are treating it very well it's not you, it's the wig. Lol
Time to break up and upgrade to human hair wigs. I promise you will see a drastic differece!
I say only do synthetic hair for a bunch of curly, big, short to medium hair (curls in synthetic hair last longer) or short hair period. I'm a weave/wig connoisseur btw lol

I used to wear synthetic wigs in the clubs for years and never washed them, I would take care of them by hanging them up and once a week spraying a mixture of argon oil and fabric conditioner on them combing out then heat styling with curling iron on a low temp, I would typically buy them in 2 s and rotate them and they would last 4 weeks I also used to buy the heat safe wigs from Afro hair shops.

I wonder if it's the kind of wigs you are getting? i had 2 medium quality wigs from Ricky's that held up for at least a year and now have 1 decent wig from a beauty supply store since about january that's in great shape. while they're not the most realistic looking wigs in broad daylight, the texture is what makes them passable. i wash them after about 6 or 7 outings in a large bowl with some detergent, rinse them out thoroughly, then soak them in regular clothes softener for about 20 minutes. i rinse them out and spray a little wig conditioner when they're dry. also, i use a wig brush and never use heat on them. since i was doing body rubs i'd have to wash them a little more frequently if oil got on it.

you could try youtubing how to wash synthetic wigs - i got some nice tips from there.

Wigs are different from human hair in many aspects, especially the way we take care of them. Some lace wigs can't use any chemical materials to make them look well, it is harmful to most wigs. Of course, if you don't want to have this problem, you can use a real to solve this!
