This is just one of several reasons to dislike the newer fangled cars with electronic fob keyless entry and start. I implore anyone buying such a car to ascertain alternate means of entry and exit should either the car or fob battery be dead. Furthermore, verify satisfactory operation of these means prior to purchase, and practice using them at regular intervals. The 2007 Corvette in question has such alternate means, which are demonstrated via a video link.
Reading the numerous responses below the main article, several readers correctly suggested unlatching the targa top. Thing is, the 72 year man was a car buff, but his prior experience was mainly with older Firebirds, and a 1996 Corvette. (Keyless entry/exit/start first came available on the 2005 model.) This was a needless tragedy, as there was an alternate release latch located on floor between seat and door panel. Owner just wasn't familiarized with it.
