    Default going ombre..

So I have recently been thinking about changing my look and doing something like this:

My hair is very short and not in great shape right now-- the longest bits of my hair come down to my shoulders. I dyed it blonde for years and I just naturally have very weak, fine hair (if my hair could handle it I would totally jump on the grey blonde bandwagon as I just love that super blonde look, but alas my hair cannot). I wear hair extensions every day and right now I have some highlights in my hair. Matching hair extensions has just become such a pain as I can't find ones that match the colour or the width of my highlights and my hair is so dark naturally that I'm still having to bleach it to get my beige/golden highlights, and I want to work on growing it out longer, which I think will mean I can't use any bleach at all. It's definitely healthier than when I was bleaching it all or even doing a full head of white blonde highlights, but there's still damage.

I'm thinking ombre might be a better option as I can just buy hair extensions that have the ombre in them and won't have to worry about bleaching my hair anymore? Since it's not very long and will be hidden with the extensions, I'm thinking as long as the very top of them matches my hair colour I'll be fine? I'm just worried I'll end up having to bleach the ends or something, so I'm wondering if anyone else does this with hair extensions and it works before I dye my hair and buy new extensions... I do feel like I might want my hair to be maybe a shade or two of a lighter brown since naturally I have dark, dark hair, but I'm not sure if dying it a couple shades lighter will continue to damage it? I've never done that before.

The other thing I'm nervous about is, while I'm sort of at a crossroads for what I'm going to pursue, if I want to go back to stripping or continue with vanilla work, I don't want to have any kind of 'crazy' hair that is going to look inappropriate in a very conservative office setting. I'm not sure if ombre has become totally mainstream or if it's still thought of as being kind of out there?

I feel like ombre is kind of done.

Light brown with highlights might work better. If you have a fine-featured face, go with dark brown or black.

^I have dark brown with some lowlights and beige/golden highlights, and I love this look, but I'm just tired of bleaching my hair and dealing with mis-matched extensions.

I just did this recently and I recommend it. My experience with it: I have weak, fine hair from being a platinum blonde for years too. I love how low maintenance it is and only having to dye it every 7 weeks (instead of every 3) is helping my hair recover. Plus, I am naturally brunette so the darker roots make me look less washed out. I know it's out of fashion now, but I love mine and wish I had done it sooner. If you get a good colorist-you don't have to go full ombre and can just go brunette to your ears/temples so that the majority of your hair is still blonde (then you only need to bother with blonde extensions instead of color matching or dying your existing ones ombre etc). Also, you will only need to retouch your roots and tone the blonde portion, so the damaged hair has more opportunity to recover. If your hairdresser is good, it will look like foils instead of 2 solid blocks of color.

Blonde ombre is trending at the moment (well, it is in Oz-but we are usually behind lol), depending on how dark your natural hair colour is it might be a good option. And, I second the grey blonde being amazing, I did it before going ombre-so pretty, but too high maintenance.

Ombré is definitely mainstream now, I see the women who work in offices downtown sport it. Find a stylist that can "paint" the highlights on, balayage it, instead of the usual method. I find it looks much nicer and more natural.

As for your hair, I have the same problem. I found out that our type of hair can't stand too much protein. It sucks because protein is in virtually every shampoo and conditioner. I have to read labels carefully to avoid it. So, try finding protein free products and use them for a while, I guarantee your regrowth will be so much better.

Thanks ladies. I'm still debating whether or not I'll do it, I went on youtube and looked at some videos for ombre extensions, and they were all saying you need to buy blonde and dye them yourself or they won't blend, but I have never been talented when it comes to dying hair (I can curl, braid, blowdry, straighten, but not colour) so I'd have to find someone to do it for me. I just got my hair done a couple weeks ago so I'll make a final decision when my roots grow out.

I know it's going out of style a bit, but I'm just so frustrated with my hair not growing longer. I feel like I've taken such drastic steps in the last couple years to stop using all the products that were destroying it and it's definitely gotten thicker, but it just constantly breaks off at the ends. I can't even remember the last time I had to get it cut. Since I can't stand having a head of dark brown hair (if I had a more olive complexion I would, but I am white as a sheet) I feel like this is my only option. For some reason even though I have dark, dark brown hair, whenever someone puts colour in my hair, it grabs red and has to be bleached or I'm stuck with this strawberry blonde/orange look.
