MANY MEN WANTED TO LAY ME DOWN, BUT FEW WANTED TO LIFT ME UP
-Eartha Kitt
Ya, I read a similar article last night, only it was from the 'needing medical assistance' side. A woman had just been recently married, was 7 months pregnant, and ended up in a hit and run that paralyzed her. Her husband had to take a significant salary cut (they were middle class and had to go below the poverty line) to afford any assistance with the care she would need the rest of her life
I had a really long post, but decided to delete it. I have strong views about these things and don't want to start any arguments. To summarize it though, poverty isn't pretty and won't ever be. There are certain people that need to get off their high horses and actually help and better those that TRY. We need to go back to rewarding hard work.

Thanks for your post. I've kinda seen this trend around..I see lots of cops on the scene in my area to arrest homeless people, which I don't really understand why.

We need to help the truly poor, like homeless. The problem is many homeless don't want the help. I'd rather help those who fell on hard times through no fault instead of those poor because of choices they kept making. BTW, not all panhandlers are homeless. When I worked in downtown Chicago or attended college there I was saddened by all the homeless.
What is going on with NYC? They need to stop electing idiots like Diblasio and Blomberg who are butting into food issues.

Yep, this is a real thing. Just another reason why this society is corrupt.
We need a resource-based economy. The entire structure of this class and wealth inequality, debt-based society needs to change.
But this isn't the place for "political" rants...
I often think about opening a housing and gardening center for the homeless. They could become gardeners and farmers and get housing, food, and medical care. Alot of people become homeless because they ran out of options and lost their home, with no help from anyone. I've nearly became homeless a few times, I know that hard times are no joke. Also, alot of veterans are unable to readjust to civilian life and so end up on the streets. It's a shame and should be illegal to allow veterans to end up on the street. Or anyone for that matter. We can easily have free housing set up for the homeless. Put them to work (if they are able-bodied) building their own eco houses. They just need the chance and the resources to do it. They could help clean up the city and get paid for it. We need new communities and new programs for a new world.
Maybe I'm a dreamer, but baby please tell me I'm not the only one...

I know a lot of people who were middle class then tragedy struck. Many were unable to get any help. Meanwhile I know people who choose not to work hard or work at all and handed everything. I have a cousin who just doesn't want to work yet gets disability. I've seen countless stories here like "I'm on welfare, how can I strip without them knowing" or "I cam but am also getting welfare". I know several with illness who got rejected for Medicaid or disability who truly needed it.

That's a line from John Lennon's "Imagine," which continues: "I hope someday, you'll join us, & the world can live as one".
Honestly, from the vid & what I've seen & experienced, a lot of people want rid of 'extra people' any way possible, so this is the opportunity for them to do it. & push people into incarceration. Also, so many stories of homeless people getting attacked, killed, set on fire..there was a story in NM about some teens that killed one & hospitalized another man, they were sleeping & not bothering them. They said they'd been doing this (not the killing but attacking) for a while as 'sport'.

The irony is a massive amount of people have been on government assistance in their lifetime whether it's EBT/Foodstamps or school lunch, or subsidized housing, etc. there's so many programs many successful people have used yet they happily pretend they are superior to the poor. If Western society could move past the shaming and blaming of poor people and admit there is a system in place to keep the disadvantaged stuck purely to maintain lots of cheap labor, everyone could live with dignity, safety, and better health.
The hotel I stay in has their crew and this crew makes them easily a million yet they are paid the bare minimum. You can make a handsome profit without leaving employees unable to live. The crazy part is so many homeless people have jobs! They just don''t pay enough so they have to revolve in and out of shelters, sleeping at friends and family homes etc. There's even Japanese style BED rentals that make money on people who can't afford to rent a room or an apartment. They just rent a bed for 12 hours.

Imagine arranging care for your elderly mother who has the beginnings of dementia. The home care aide, who has established a warm and caring relationship with her, hurts her back while helping your mother out of the shower. Because the home care aide has no health coverage, she doesn’t go to the doctor. She misses a few days of work, leaving you with a substitute sent by the agency. This is confusing to your mother, who doesn’t trust the new aide. http://talkpoverty.org/2015/07/28/si...-coverage-gap/
^^^^^This situation actually happened to my aunt who is now relying on disability after decades of caring for elderly clients. Poverty has nothing to do being lazy but it has everything to do with the brainwashing those at the top have perpetuated in this country since the Puritans. The people at the top do the least work and make sure to keep workers distracted from that and blaming themselves. no one has total foresight.

Many here are probably too young to remember this This is the system that's in place to keep the mentally-ill homeless out on the streets. Even tho they may have started w/ good intentions, this is the foundation for the legal requirement that an individual 'must show themselves to be a danger to themselves or others' b4 they can be committed against their will.
While I share OP's dislike for seeing any person unfairly imprisoned … ::zips flame suit:: … there is typically a lot more going on than what any observer sees from their bedroom window.
As stated above, MANY homeless are mentally ill &/or addicts, & many others are also willing bums who refuse to work. Notice I am not by any means saying ALL are this way. But the sad truths are that a) many are & b) many don't WANT help. The only alternative to getting those individuals off the streets & 'helped' IS involuntary committal … but we can't have THAT now! That would be a violation of the person's civil rights! Damn this police state trying to force ppl to get off (or on, depending) drugs … & possibly get them on a path to becoming a functional, contributing member of society.
My area has a ginormous homeless problem. A large percentage of them come here bc the climate is favourable yr-round & it's a very live-&-let-live kind of community here. Sm of them get extremely aggressive when you tell them 'No' when they demand a handout. Kinda like sm club staff we've known … Yet they still somehow manage to find $$$ for alcohol, smokes, etc
It baffles me that so many here seem to buy the 'capitalism is the devil' bs in this video, when a free market system is precisely what allows strippers to make their living. I find the video rather insidious in how it tries to lump-in all poor ppl as being mere one-dimensional victims of circumstance (the factors contributing to homelessness being a lot deeper IMO than just 'falling on hard times'), that circumstance as being soley the fault of the 'top ___%' & capitalism, labelled an exploitative tool of the wealthy & therefore, the root of evil in this country.
Now w/ all of this said, I think these ^^^^ are completely separate issues from the many incidents of assholes that target homeless ppl for beatings/murder.
