Default How to keep it secret from future employers/school?

    Hi ladies,

I searched as best I could to find the answer to this question, so I'm sorry if it has already been answered. First of all thank you so much for your contributions to this site. I've been reading every thread I can in the Newbie section, Hustle hut, and more to educate myself as much as possible before I finally audition and start dancing. Background: I've decided to strip to pay for pre med classes and for my eventual graduate program in the medical field.

My question is - how do I keep this a secret from graduate schools that I apply to and potential future employers? I'm planning on working at a club that's not directly in the same city where I got to school, not telling anyone, doing my hair/makeup very different from real life (another persona entirely) etc but you never know... could it prevent me from getting into school if they somehow found out by doing a background check? How do you cover your tracks? Would love to hear what has worked for all of you, because I know lots of girls are pursuing careers after stripping. I want to do this to get ahead and take care of myself, not to sabotage my future. : )

    Thanks!

Have you tried running a search? Try terms like 'background checks' or 'stripping showing up on a background check'. This has been discussed extensively bc it is such a common & often valid concern. There is also a thread round here smwhere titled 'Licencing and Background Check Info by State'

Thanks for your response. I understand about actual background checks, but I am curious about personal experiences. When actually applying to grad schools, what was your personal experience, etc. Did it come up? Even if they found something, did it actually effect your chances of getting in or your relationships with your coworkers or future employers. If it's repetitive I apologize, I was just genuinely curious so I wanted to ask.

I really really really really would not worry about it. Our resident horror story spreader is not around right now, but she's the only person I have ever heard of it affecting... because she danced WHILE she held a license.

They won't know about it unless you tell them. Schools do not interview your neighbors, attempt to dig up dirt, etc. It's not the FBI. Dancing/camming is perfectly legal anyway. They read your resume/curriculum vitae/transcripts/test scores, run a criminal history, and that's it. That said, I would never list it, as most admissions committees in that field are largely stuffy old white people.

I am pre-med and intend to dance until I am in either medical or grad school, and probably for the first year of school as well. I'm very much not concerned about it. If anyone gave me shit, I'd pull an Izzie Stevens scene (Grey's Anatomy... look it up )

It's never come up for me and I'm licensed to dance in multiple states. I think the reason ( mine anyway ) hasn't come up is that is was only criminal background checks run.

Thanks so much, Selina, I really appreciate your response! Haha... I'm clearly paranoid and need to get over it, so I appreciate the straight talk. Way to go on being pre med as well! Your encouragement and knowing that you are doing it too is super hopeful to me, so I feel way better about it and empowered. : )

I did try to read through the threads about licenses and background checks etc to educate myself. How do I not do what she did then - this sounds so obvious/stupid but don't I need to hold a license while I dance? Ideally the mgmt at a club where I dance won't check back to see if I've actually gotten it. Sounds like working under the table is best bet. Again, sorry if I'm missing something. Thanks!

Do not work under the table as a dancer. There is enough that can go wrong legally when doing everything above board, don't stack th cards against yourself that way.

Not every area requires a licence to dance. Depending on how a city is zoned (for want of a better way to put it) laws & requirements w/in the same are will be different. Daytona was a curious example of this when I worked there -- Daytona Beach clubs were all bikini, bc of sm lawsuit the clubs brought against the city over smtg-or-other & lost … but one club was permitted to be topless … in Daytona Beach Shores, literally 2min away from most of the clubs that were bikini.

Licencing requirements can sm times be equally goofy. In D/FW, Dallas requires licencing but Ft Worth doesn't. A club in Euston (part of Ft Worth) will let you work that nite as long as you're legal + hirable … only a couple miles away, you need that pesky licence bc it's Dallas.

Point being, look into the laws & requirements for your area & for neighbouring areas.

FWIW when I was going thru the enlistment process, I was worried abt my dancer past as well. They didn't care -- dancing is legal, & as long as I had no prostitution/drug charges on my record as a result (& I didn't), I was good to go.

If I could go back and talk to myself when I first started my advice would be: if you ever want to move on with your life and not have ANYONE holding stripping over your head, DONT TELL ANYONE!! Seriously! I know it's hard not to brag about the earnings and not to have anyone to vent to but trust me. When people get mad or friendships end the first thing they want to do is hold this over your head. When people get jealous that you're debt free and able to do stuff the majority of the people your age can't do, the first thing they want to do is "well you take your clothes off for money! You're not smart! You're a stupid stripper" (in so many words), and then the worst of it all is the people who always have their hand out thinking you owe them something. So my advice, keep it to yourself and when you need a shoulder to learn on just come here. Because people cannot be trusted to just let things die down and let you move on with your life post stripping. This has been my experience when I confided in a classmate that I was dancing. I never made the mistake again but I do have to go on forever wondering who she has told. So keep quiet and spend quiet and invest!!

Your employer and school will never know unless they either see you there or word gets around because you told. I just spoke with a licensed rn who used to dance and said her license NEVER came up (for 9 years!!) and she NEVER had a problem finding a job. That echoes the sentiments of various posters with licenses. Oh and the last thing I would say is don't work in dirty clubs because a bust will show up as solicitation on a criminal bg check and don't use your strip club name when you get a car or major purchase because that will show up on credit history. You're welcome! I've researched this forwards and backwards bc I'm leaving the industry for a vanilla job within a year give or take.

Licensing depends on location. The kind of license depends as well. Phoenix calls it a 'business license' basically so even if anyone checked, it would say I had a business license. It doesn't specify for WHAT. A lot of locations do not require licenses; check the thread in Club Chat "licensing by states".

Yes the management will likely check back. Here, they will not even let you audition without the license; other cities here will give you anywhere from 3 days to a month to get their licenses; but management does check on it later. They can get in trouble if unlicensed dancers are working.

To avoid what happened to Melonie: a) know your local laws about contact, stage things, etc. For example, in Phx technically you can be ticketed for taking a tip in your costume. b) avoid situations where you can get arrested (her issue was triggered by an arrest causing further investigation). Don't work in clubs where things are not obviously kosher. We just had a club get busted for restocking the bar with stolen liquor, staff selling drugs, etc. Stay outta that stuff. c) don't be a prostitute, don't ever even allude to meeting a customer outside the club. Even a comeback like "How much? A million dollars!" could be enough for an asshole undercover cop to get you.

You're not being paranoid, I'm glad someone is thinking before they teehee-i'm-gonna-be-a-stripper. It can be a great gig to get through school but you gotta protect yourself as well.

Bolded bc this cannot be overstated.

Idk abt what happened to Melonie so I can't comment to that; but I have seen things posted in threads here on SW that were brought to mind by the part that I bolded here.

    1) would have to dig up the specific thread, but in the last 6mo there was one started by a girl asking abt getting drinks ITC even tho she was underage. She seemed quite nonchalant abt the risk to herself for underage drinking since it was a dirty club that didn't care abt the rampant extras going on, much less serving minors, as long as they got their cut. That's the kind of thing we mean when discussing clubs doing un-kosher shit, along w/ not requiring proof-of-age which sm girls freak over providing bc of the fear of it showing up on vanilla job checks. Anything along these lines -- run away.

    2) there are many, many threads in Hustle Hut discussing the various ways of talking a guy into VIP when he wants extras & you don't roll like that. I read thru sm of the deepest-buried threads there & think Jesus Christ, you're lucky that wasn't a UC! (Police upbringing talking here) Anything that even suggests that you will, in fact, 'provide' is a gamble. I have rolled the dice a couple times myself, subtly, & seen girls employ more brazen tactics … like the girl I worked w/ who once led a guy to the ATM & had him pull out $400 under the impression she would BRB, she just had to go dress out then would sneak out w/ him … she took that $400 & hid in the DR for an hr.

    3) know your laws Know Your Laws KNOW YOUR BLOODY LAWS ::puts away bullhorn:: I have been VERY lucky several times that I didn't get caught doing smtg at work that was illegal in that area, only bc I didn't know any better. Now, I am a very clean dancer -- I don't even let customers grab my boobs, forget any other funny business -- but those laws determine everything from how you can accept tips during a stage set, to how naked you can get during contact vs no-contact dances, etc. They can also vary enormously from place to place. When you go to get your entertainer permit, ask where you can go to find out abt the most current laws in your area. Sm times they can be found, at least in part, online, but Îve nvr found out much that way. Best IMO to go sm place that you can find a current hard copy.

Thank you so much, ladies!! I really appreciate all of your insights and help. My takeaway from this is - cover your tracks and don't tell ANYONE, pay your taxes, know your laws and know your laws!! : ) SO grateful for this site and all of you.
