A lot of these athletes come from financially illiterate backgrounds and feel like they have to spend their income as fast as they receive it without saving for the future.

I'm sure he has some lavish purchases but yeah overall is best to be wise with money and living within your means is the way to long term wealth. most pro athletes don't spend their money wise the time they are playing and once the get cut or retire many of them go broke. Sad but sounds like this guy won't be in that statistic if he stays earning pro income but living within his means.
