Default How have you all gained pole experience?

So I've spoken to a few girls at my club and they all told me they started teaching themselves how to pole while at work and that they never took classes. I've taken a few beginning classes and I can't imagine myself learning on my own. What have you girls done? I want to practice at work but I honestly feel intimidated. I know I have the strength to learn on my own. I'm a personal trainer. But I dont know where to start. Please let me know your stories about how you all have gotten better and if you learned from any youtube vids please post those as well! Thanks babes :*

YouTube for sure and studio veena I believe is the name but you can search on here for pole videos there's a whole post about it....

Good luck you need dedication and time... That's why I haven't gotten to many pole tricks down... I can't help my sweaty palms maybe someone can assist with that part I can probably get more moves down...

other girls taught me on slow days and i would practice on slow days and on the satellite stage. also bought my own pole for home. watch, learn, and ask the others to teach you. you definitely don't need to know pole tricks to make $ but I think it's fun and it's a great workout.

Youtube videos, other girls at the club were nice enough to teach me so I don't look like a retarded duck, watching other girls on stage, keep practicing.. I tried pole dancing class once but didn't like it tbh. :/

I've been dancing 10 years and I know how to climb the pole and flip upside down, that's it and I never do it. I don't care about pole tricks and don't take the time to teach myself or learn them. Besides that I am a good pole dancer but being a good pole dancer and doing pole tricks are two different things to me. If you want to learn then just do like the other girls here have said, watch others, videos and practice practice practice. If you really dedicate yourself to it you will get good.

I was way overprepared with a home pole / pole class. Mostly self taught at home. I should have just learned at the club since I barely pole. I save my energy / pace and barely use any on stage.

The other posters are all correct, pole tricks are totally unnecessary for making money. But if you're at a club where stage shows are a big thing (a party type of club with make it rain types of custies) then pole tricks can be useful and fun.
I bought a stationary pole online and set it up in my room where I would practice everyday from watching YouTube videos. I took a few private pole dance lessons too, and they were very helpful to me. I think private lessons are much better than classes because its more personal and one on one. I did all this before I started dancing so that when I worked at my first club, I already knew the basics.

There is also at least one thread on here discussing different grip aids. Try running a search for 'pole grip aid'

YouTube was my main school of pole, boasting such instructors as DirdyBirdy & Julia Wahl (aka emotioncatcher, Idk if she still uses that handle on any of her vids). Aerial Amy has a very informative pole blog.

I also found it very helpful to learn a bit abt physics, esp as that science relates to sports/sports medicine. Even when you watch a video for a new trick 1000x b4 trying the trick itself, you don't always know what exactly you're asking your body to do until you actually start attempting it. Proper technique is essential to accomplish particular moves safely. I think that understanding the physics involved in more advanced tricks not only made them easier for me to learn, but helped me to learn to do them properly.

At home, on lord i love playing on my pole! It took me forever to learn to anything on it though! Ive been learning to pole dance since i was 17, my sister had one in her apartment and would show me little thing. I ended up buying a super cheap pole one day off craigslist for my apartment when i was 18, and i would just watch youtube videos and learn off of that.

I've learned 100% of my tricks from work. I'd see videos of basic tricks and then I'd practice them on the secondary stages when I wasn't busy. Or if I saw a girl do a cool trick I'd just try to replicate it. Just a lot of practice, experimenting, and trial and error. Pole tricks aren't necessary, but I think it can help make things more interesting. They also help if you dance to rock or dubstep, something that is fast paced but also hard to twerk to (unlike pop or hip hop).

I'd be wary of buying a pole off of Craig's list. X-Poles are solid and industry standard. I don't know about powder coated either - you can't go wrong with chrome or brass though. I would be wary of anything "coated" because you can wear the finish off fast (this happened to me with a cheap ass pole when I started) and I got a share of metal stuck in my finger when I was practicing. I was a pole dancer before I started stripping and they are VERY different things. That being said however I love doing pole routines on stage and I don't care about making it rain. I love pole and I have fun on stage. If you want to get good - I mean REALLY good - if you're into it I mean... PoleAndAerial.com is your place. You can make a free account - but it's $30 a month for unlimited access and you learn from national and world champions. As well as pole lessons - they have silks and Lyra (suspended hoop) lessons *I'm into silks too so that's great for me* Check it out - you'll learn more from that site than anywhere on the Internet - and they have an online shop with everything from grip aids to Tony and Pleaser shoes - get ups - DVDs - etc.. It's a good site. If you don't want to shell out the $30 a month - you can check out Studio Veena... Do reconsider your Craig's List purchase though. Get an X-Pole if you're serious.. Like the other girls said - you don't need pole to make money - you need to hustle. If you're like me though- it may help you keep your mental mind sound and yea - you get in the BEST shape of your life...! My pole idol is Felix Cane. I have a few others - but she is just amazing. Good luck and happy hustling and poling! :-)

I would go with a 45mm - it's easier to grip and it's usually what they'll have in the clubs <3

As a side note - Aniela mentioned Aerial Amy and Dirty Birdy - both of them kick ass - I know Aerial Amy was a guest instructor on PoleAndAerial.com - I don't think Anh Le is on there yet - but they have a to of amazing people who teach - and the reason I hype this site to people who want to pole is because they are so great at breaking down all the mechanics - from different grips to distance from the pole - to variations on spins and poses - as well as ways to prepare yourself physically for certain moves (like they'll tell you exactly how to stretch for certain moves that require a lot of flexibility) and they have whole flex, strength building, and floor work sections. Jeni Janover is the shit for floor. You could probably handle a 50mm pole even with small hands - but you'd probably be more comfortable with 45mm. I wasn't trying to thread hijack - I do a lot of pole outside of work - trying to go pro with it - I love the art and especially for fitness and for people working as strippers - I whole heartedly believe it can keep you mentally grounded. Like they say - it's important to have outside hobbies - I like being able to integrate my pole work with my club work. If I'm feeling down at work - rocking the pole was always a great way to lift my spirits. Especially if you're really working at something and you pull it off on stage - you can walk off feeling like "now whut" :-P *lol* helps you get your confidence back - get your head back in the hustle! ;-)

That was the pole I bought to practice on. Its decent. Its a good pole to practice on when you're a beginner. Its sturdy enough to do basic moves on, just make sure its screwed tightly into the ceiling.

Most of it I learned from other girls and taking a few classes. I know a few basic tricks like climbing and basic inversions, but I never use them. Pole tricks don't make money at my club and the pole is ALWAYS dirty! Even after I clean it it's still dirty gross.

At my old shithole we had one filthy chick we called "Snail Trail." You always knew where she'd been because the sticky residue was like the kind secreted in the Alien movies.

^ tempest that's fucking disgusting lmfao!!!

im loving it that many of us don't know any tricks. I know a handful of very very basic ones but besides being terribly unco i never felt the need to learn nor had the time in the club.

I used to go into the club super early to practice, back in the day. All I ended up with was bruises. Once I took a running start at it & almost knocked myself out. Eventually, I learned to stay away from it & just concentrate on the men at the stage to make money rather than the pole in the middle of it. Although, it did come in handed to hang on to for balance after a few to many drinks. LOL

Now, floor shows, I practiced at home infront of full length mirrors & banks with those.

There's only 2 demographics that you'll really need pole work for : the urban and uterine sector. The latter really isn't very profitable and they tend to congregate in large, noisy herds. Urban clubs, on the other hand can be profitable stage shows.
