Default Going Back Again...in a Different Country

    Hey ladies,

I've been dancing on and off in the US since 2008, with mixed success. I most recently stopped dancing in August 2014. I moved to the UK two weeks ago and got hired at a pretty nice club in my town, but I'm stressing about going back after 12 months off, and in a different country, too.

If any of you have danced in England or Scotland or Wales and have any hints for an American, I'd be so glad to hear it. Otherwise, if y'all can just let me know that it'll be a learning curve but I'll most likely survive, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.

Have you browsed or run a search in Club Chat or Club Reviews? There's info on dancing in all three of those countries on here. There's even a long thread about dancing in the UK in Club Chat. There's certainly not as much info as there is about dancing in the US, but other than the smaller earning potential, the general idea is still the same. Good luck!

I'm interested in the cultural differences also, like is the UK more or less handsy? Things like that. I'll be keeping an eye on here .

Okay, brief update on the main differences between Scotland and the US:

    1) They are far less handsy than I'm used to (but, coming from OK and TX, a dude is "polite" if he only tries to finger you once, soooo). The club I'm at is super strict about the guys not touching the girls. Like, "I made £50 because a customer wanted me to do stuff that I wouldn't do and he left the VIP and I got to keep his money" strict. SO. AWESOME!

    2) Most of them are used to Eastern Europeans, so an American is a nice change for them, and they all seemed EXTREMELY eager to tell me all about their latest forays into the wilds of North America. It really is a huge adventure for them to go to places we drive through on the regular. Aw, bless.

    3) I only did one stage song in a 5 hour shift. They don't do stage tips. Money is made entirely in dances and VIPs. This is deeply unfortunate, since I'm used to making good money on stage tips (I'm a pole monkey).

    4) I met two guys from Falkirk, Scotland, and they sounded JUST LIKE SCOTTY from Star Trek. I was dying to ask them to say, "I cannae give her anymore, cap'n!" I restrained myself.

    5) No kilts.

    6) Multiculturalism is big, which is to be expected. There were 12 dancers tonight, and they came from 12 different countries. Hungary, Romania, South Africa, Thailand, USA....etc etc etc.

I did shit tonight, but I'm giving myself a break on it, seeing as how I'm just getting back into the game after a long hiatus and in a different country/climate/latitude/culture. Tomorrow I'll get back on that mofo horse.

^I really want to reiterate that the earning potential is far lower than you're used to in the USA. You can't expect the same consistency of earnings that you're used to. I stopped working weeknights when I danced in Edinburgh because they were just not worth it. Weekends were consistently good -- usually around 400£ per night with a bit more sometimes (and maybe one or two nights with a bit less, but those were unusual). Basically, your definition of "good" and "shit" will have to change with your new location, so don't beat yourself up over it.

How strict do the clubs seem about having all the legal documents to work in the area?

Any club I have worked at we didn't need anything beyond ID which they sometimes didn't even ask for. This was in Canada. I'm just wondering if it's like that in the UK?

I found very. With EU/UK citizens able to work all over, there's no shortage of willing and able dancers, so clubs have no reason to risk breaking the law to let someone dance illegally. As a Canadian though, you can get a working holiday visa for the UK for up to 2 years, so you can do it legally.
